Maine in May - Marvelous

  • 5 of 5
I'd known about the Homestead long before it was available as a rental property. I'd always thought that it would be a great place to stay. I was not disappointed. The Homestead is comfortable, roomy (especially for one person), well equipped and welcoming. any questions I may have had were answered promptly.
Maine in May is wonderful. It's quiet, cool, restful and very relaxing. I'll be going back in 2014 - a bit later so my kids and grandkids can join me. But May will always be special.

Wonderful Home!

  • 5 of 5
We had a wonderful vacation at the Homestead. This house is just fantastic for our large family. The 4 bedrooms were situated in the back of the house for a quiet sleep. Great to have 2 full baths too! The house was very clean and the kitchen had everything needed for meals. There were extra towels and sheets to use as well. The laundry room was very spacious and also had a cooler, and a few beach chairs to use.

The location was GREAT! Looking outside the front of the house, you can see the sun set every night. The pebbly beach was just a short 1 minute walk away through the back yard. Our girls enjoyed the big slide in the backyard and seeing wild turkeys walking through in the early morning. The back screened in porch is fantastic for relaxing during the day or playing inside on a rainy day.

The extended family that lives next door was very friendly and helpful. David (who we rented the house from) is very nice and helpful and asked us if we needed anything.

We love this house and the location was great! We would definitely recommend the Homestead!

An ideal location for a family vacation

  • 5 of 5
We chose this cottage in the first place based on a phone conversation with the owner David Johnson. David called me at home 10 minutes after I made an email enquiry through HomeAway and talked about the cottage, the area and his family connections to Bailey Island.

We were a group of 4 adults, one teenager and two smaller children and so the 4 bedrooms and two bathrooms were a perfect fit for us.

We found the cottage very clean on arrival and had everything we needed. The kitchen was well equipped (manual dishwashing skills need to be remembered) and there was a really good supply of beach toys for kids and games for evenings, also a huge collection of books for readers.

We were warmly welcomed by David and also by David's sister Mary, and her family (who live next door).

One of the best features of this property is its location. We made plenty of use of the secluded cove that is behind the cottage. Although this is described as semi-private (shared by Mary and family), we were the only users during the week we stayed. The cottage is in walking distance of a great ice-cream stand and "Land's End". A short drive (or longer walk) brought us to the Giant's Stairs restaurant where we enjoyed two dinners and a great breakfast.

A highlight of the week was fresh lobster provided by David (4 free). Can't visit Maine without eating lobster and this was a great way to do it. Everything you need to cook and eat lobster is provided in the kitchen (as well as eating instructions).

The only slight problem we had was low water pressure (compared to home) but so long as we scheduled shower time this was no big deal.

I would have no hesitation to recommend this property to someone looking for a vacation property in this part of Maine.

Owner's Response: The low water pressure was also noticed by our cleaner the Saturday this wonderful family left The Homestead. I contacted a plumber immediately who came and fixed the problem. The water pressure is fine now and I apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused.

A true Maine Experience

  • 5 of 5
Renting the Johnson Homestead is a true Maine Experience. When my husband and I decided to rent a place on Bailey Island it was late in the year as we wanted it for the week of the 4th of July, so our family could join us for our holiday feast. We looked at several camps, cottages and houses and as my husband tells me that I'm way too fussy. I couldn't seem to find a place that would be suitable for my family. When I spotted the Johnson Homestead I immediately emailed David Johnson, the owner, and he called me back to tell me that the week of the 4th was already taken but if he heard of any that was available that week he'd let me know. David was very kind and helpful and I thanked him for his time.

Realizing I wasn't going to rent on my favorite Island I knew I move had to move on to somewhere else. The phone rang the next day, it was David calling to let me know that the tenants who reserved the week had to cancel.

When I walked through the door and looked around the home was filled with comfort and charm. Everything was available; fresh sheets, towels, dishes, bowls, and every kind of small appliance you might want to use. They have a comfortable bed for everyone, TV's to catch the news and plenty of good books to read. You can watch the beautiful sunsets right from the living room and you can see Little Harbor standing in the kitchen.

When the grandchildren arrived they loved sliding on the big slide and swinging on the glider in the back yard. As soon as breakfast was over the children would run out back to enjoy the beach. Before we left they surprised and gifted me with lots of sea glass that they accumulated during their stay. The children are still talking about Bailey Island today.

On the 4th it was time to celebrate and enjoy the feast I had prepared for everyone. We ordered lobsters from David and being the fuss budget that I am, I. asked him if I could borrow his outside lobster cooker so I wouldn't make a mess in the kitchen. David responded with a smile and delivered fresh lobster from him lobster traps and brought the lobster cooker as well. Of all the different foods that I prepared you can only guess what the favorite was. YUP, THE LOBSTERS!!!! They were so fresh and delicious my family said "You don't even need butter with these.". We thank you, David, for being so accommodating.

Everywhere you look there is natural beauty that surrounds you. The Johnson Homestead is where you want to stay.

Breathtaking Sunsets, Comfortable home!

  • 5 of 5
We loved our stay at the Johnson Homestead! The home is well equipped and comfortable and accommodated our family perfectly. We enjoyed learning about the Johnson family history. We had plenty of room in the house and loved the screened in porch. David and his family were helpful and welcoming and made us feel right at home. David took four of our family members lobstering and dropped off our requested lobsters for dinner in the evenings-what a treat! We visited all of the local sites and enjoyed collecting sea glass and watching Myron. Our girls went on a three hour kayaking tour and we all loved Land's End gift shop and Tiffin’s for ice cream in the evenings. We hope to return to Bailey Island again. Thank you David for a wonderful week!

Bailey Island is the last in a series of picturesque islands connected to the mainland by three bridges, the last of which is the famous 'Cribstone Bridge'. It is about a twenty minute drive down Rte 24 from Cooks Corner in Brunswick. People considering staying on Bailey Island, but unfamiliar with the area may wish to note the following:There are grocery stores, shopping malls, a cinema, major chain and numerous local restaurants /retail outlets, fitness centers, medical facilities (including two hospitals), golf courses, Bowdoin College, Bath Maritime Museum, and, and other attractions within a half hour drive in the Brunswick/Topsham/Bath area.

Freeport, the home to LLBean, is a 45 minute drive while Portland is about a one hour drive away.

While you may just want to relax and enjoy the beauty of Bailey Island, the region offers a variety of sights, activities, and resources for our guests.
