This perfectly preserved private home defines the historic Woodhouse Family legacy that created East Hampton as an arts-loving summer destination in the years from 1910-1920. The Playhouse was built by Mary Woodhouse for her daughter, in 1915, and has belonged only to the Woodhouse and Brockman families since then. The Playhouse has been lovingly and artfully maintained to preserve all its unique characteristics of a Tudor Playhouse turned luxury private residence.
Magnificent entertaining setting with gracious bedrooms and en suite baths; heated, saltwater 50' gunite pool, original fountains, stone terraces, garden sculptures and towering copper beeches as well as original specimen plantings. A/C, laundry, chef's kitchen. Magical interior balconies and 40' cathedral ceilings in the Great Room.

Your home is beyond lovely …enchanting. I am delighted with it.
We never imagined that we would find a private home of such architectural and historical interest on a vacation rental website. Our weekend at the Playhouse was an escape from an escape! It was so quiet and the gardens are so lovely and otherworldly that we felt transported from the bustle of the Hamptons when we wanted to be, but were close enough to town to walk.
We had such a cozy weekend … lit the fire and then enjoyed hot wine in front of its flames.
I hope to have the good fortune of renting the house again sometime in the future.
Thank you very much
The "Play House" as it's called, was a phenomenal location for our summer get away. The huge, historic estate combines all your modern day comforts (TV in the bedroom, great bathrooms, comfortable beds, amazing kitchen) with the allure and enchantment of the early 1900's. Several of us, all who work in the arts, stayed here and we were completely inspired by the house. We enjoyed sitting in the quiet gardens and swimming in the long pool. The property was clean, very well-maintained and stunning with antique decor.
A five minute walk, we could quickly be in the center of town on the main street for shopping, restaurants, pubs and the movies.
A two minute drive gets you right to the beach, although I chose to take a lovely 15 minute walk through the woody, neighborhood to look at all the other houses.
Mirra, the owner, is lovely, very easy to talk to and most helpful. She was quick to answer my questions and give any advice I needed regarding travel and the area.
I would recommend this property to anyone. A family (I suggest children 8 years or older) would enjoy the ample amount of space, a group of friends would have numerous spots to hang out, romantic couples could get lost in the fantasy of another era, artists will feel the creative weight that is held within the walls. It's a wonderful space and I hope to return again for another romantic, creative retreat.
Many thanks Mirra for preserving and sharing such a wonderful landmark.
This property is completely secluded and enchanting, enjoying utter privacy - within 3 min drive, 5 min cycling, or 10 min walk of East Hampton Village and the heart of the Hamptons experience.
Everything: shops, movie theaters, restaurants, library, Guild Hall, historic Mulford Farm, best ocean beaches on the South Fork, riding stables, nature walks and galleries - all are just moments away.
