Waterville Valley is a four-season resort, in a valley surrounded by mountains. The alpine ski area has hosted world cap races, national snowboarding & free style events. It is an ideal family ski area, with lessons in all disciplines, for all ages. It has a day-care facility as well. Access trails to the X/C network are 100 yards from the house. 18 red clay tennis courts are one quarter mile away. Town Square (one half mile away) has shops, restaurants, and indoor ice skating. The White Mountain Athletic Club has fitness equipment, two indoor tennis courts, indoor swimming pool, sauna, steam, jacuzzi, and massage. Waterville supports a network of hiking trails and mountain bike trails (high bike trails are accessible by a chair lift). The nine-hole golf course has scenic views and challenging holes. The house itself--though very close to all the activities--has the feeling of a private, secluded setting. It is on a level with the West Branch of the Mad River, with a 40 foot long swimming hole and a dunking pool for the wood-burning sauna. The private outdoor jacuzzi, on a rear deck, accommodates six adults. The Alpine Ski Area generally opens by Thanksgiving; the X/C trails somewhat later. Corcoran Pond (canoes, kayaks, peddleboats) is the site of the Memorial Day Trout Fishing Derby (600 stocked trout). The Mad River is also heavily stocked. The Recreation Center offers basketball, pickleball, and various activities for young people.
David and Birdie Britton are retired school teachers (Milton Academy and Governors Academy). Birdie is an artist, whose works have been shown throughout USA, as well as in Europe and the Caribbean. Both David and Birdie are active athletes. Both have worn national age-group titles in ski racing and windsurfing. Together they run the local (very small) Waterville newspaper.
David purchased this house in 1995
One of a very, very few private homes for rent (most Waterville rentals are condos). Private setting on the river.
This is a private home, furnished with original art works and other things people find tasteful and we hold valuable. The house is not appropriate for trampoline-rambunctious teenagers or young adult males who enjoy a good shaving cream fight.
