We highly enjoyed staying with Cameron. He is a great host, we came as foreigners and left as friends.
The location can't be better on the whole island. We enjoyed running in the morning on the beach, which is just some minutes away. You can run for hours over the dunes, pass golf courses, get to other beaches. Camerons house is located in a very nice residential aerea, very quiet, great gardens, just perfect.
The suite itself has everything you need, is well equipped and whatever you might need in addition, Cameron will for sure provide. Some guests commented on this website, that the place needs refurbishment. My answer is: what do they expect for the price ? The place is clean and very charming, a little patina does not harm. If you want it excellent, you pay 4 times as much. We thought it was the perfect place for a very good price. We would always come back.
Stayed in the King Kam. Has a full kitchen (open-air type, no windows, just screens) with access to laundry facilities, barbeque grill in the backyard and pool a short walk away. Given its central location, it's a great value for the price, hence 5 stars. An older house with its share of wrinkles, so if you're one to sweat the small stuff or freak out at the sight of a bug or two, or want to spend your time hanging out in a luxurious room, DO NOT STAY HERE. Recommended for active, young (or young-at-heart), easy-going types. Manager lives on site and is very helpful and friendly.
We had a wonderful time in the Queen Suite. Cam welcomed us with some delicious chocolates and very thorough notes about the place and neighborhood. The Queen Suite was a good size for a couple and one single but any more would have been too much. Be prepared to fall in love with cat that visits the back porch, walks to the neighborhood, the pool, the hot tub, and nearby beach front. I was in town for a conference at the Sheraton and was very happy to have an affordable and lovely getaway.
In mentioning to my husband I was going to write a review for this rental he said, “If you do that people might find out how cool this spot is and we won't be able to get reservations when we want them”. I laughed but he has a point.
In looking for a rental my first consideration is location, second is price and third I need peace and quiet. This rental gave me all three.
Location: The property is in nice residential area that abuts the Grand Hyatt property. As you walk out the front door there is a short path that leads to a gracefully curved path with lanterns taking you to Ship Wreck Beach or the lighthouse point. If you take the path the other direction it will lead you to the pool, tennis courts and Brennecke's Beach.
Price: We have stayed on Kauai approximately 15 times over the past 30 years. This was by far the best price I have ever found! The house is older and worn but I really didn't care as we weren't there for the luxurious accommodations. We stayed 40 days, 10 in the Blue Hawaiian and 30 in the King Kam. Both have areas that need to be refurbished but if they were perfected the price would increase. We didn't mind a little rust here and there and some visiting ants in the King Kam room from time to time. We have found those little ants, along with geckos, roaches and other forms of life in many rentals we have stayed in on the Island. It's part of the experience.
Quiet: It was very quiet! All the renters seemed to settle in by 10 pm each night. The neighborhood itself is on a dead end so there is little traffic. There are some beautiful Rose-ringed Parakeets that land in trees around the house as it starts to get dark. You can hear them talking for about 15 minutes and are delightful to watch but not bothersome. This place is rooster free! This was our first visit back after a four year break because of my inability to sleep through crowing roosters at all hours.
Of the two rooms we stayed in the Blue Hawaiian is larger and can sleep four. Cooking there for me was limited by the double electric burners and small sink. The room is light and airy and very comfortable. The King Cam has less light for those who are sensitive to the light. It offers a full kitchen separated from the outside by a screen. I liked the ambiance of the kitchen as it reminded me of Hawaii in years long past. Both have their own style of charm as did our host, Cam. He is one of the jewels that makes this place special.
The two star designation is attributable to both a great location (Grand Hyatt is around the corner) and the price as compared to surrounding properties. My wife and I are both seasoned VRBO users and found this property lacking in so many ways. From late in the process reservation (made some 8 months in advance and confirmed by ownership) snafu's to the outright unkept presentation of the King Kam unit which has not aged gracefully. The negatives feature mildew lined shower curtain, screen door jury rigged with electrical tape in an attempt to hold it together, the clear over use of electrical outlets used to run some far less than new appliances, both of which are in need of disposal. If price and location are your only criteria then you are in the right place. If you desire more, then I would strongly encourage you to continue your search.
I stayed in the King Kam Suite for 4 nights and thought it was a great deal. I think this place is perfect for an independent traveler and offers excellent value. You get a big bedroom, a bathroom and full kitchen with a nice view out to the lawn. Everything felt secure and it's in a nice residential neighborhood convenient for beaches, restaurants, shopping and that kind of stuff. There's a lot of fun stuff within a ten minute walk. Cam was very accommodating and left loads of information along with an endless supply of soap, towels and other good beach stuff. I highly recommend it.
We are at the top end of the Poipu Kai Resort Complex and that is the pool and Jacuzzi we use. We are just a one minute drive to Poipu Beach Park itself with plenty of free parking. There are 3 golf courses, two shopping centers and 3 tennis clubs within one mile of Lanai Villas and Starbucks is just half a mle away!
