Great location, great host !

  • 5 of 5

We highly enjoyed staying with Cameron. He is a great host, we came as foreigners and left as friends.

The location can't be better on the whole island. We enjoyed running in the morning on the beach, which is just some minutes away. You can run for hours over the dunes, pass golf courses, get to other beaches. Camerons house is located in a very nice residential aerea, very quiet, great gardens, just perfect.

The suite itself has everything you need, is well equipped and whatever you might need in addition, Cameron will for sure provide. Some guests commented on this website, that the place needs refurbishment. My answer is: what do they expect for the price ? The place is clean and very charming, a little patina does not harm. If you want it excellent, you pay 4 times as much. We thought it was the perfect place for a very good price. We would always come back.

The two star designation is attributable to both a great location (Grand Hyatt is around the corner) and the price as compared to surrounding properties. My wife and I are both seasoned VRBO users and found this property lacking in so many ways. From late in the process reservation (made some 8 months in advance and confirmed by ownership) snafu's to the outright unkept presentation of the King Kam unit which has not aged gracefully. The negatives feature mildew lined shower curtain, screen door jury rigged with electrical tape in an attempt to hold it together, the clear over use of electrical outlets used to run some far less than new appliances, both of which are in need of disposal. If price and location are your only criteria then you are in the right place. If you desire more, then I would strongly encourage you to continue your search.

Owner's Response: 95% of our customers are seasoned VRBO travelers, including me. You will need to check the other good reviews of this property to get a fair appraisal of the KING KAM SUITE. We always go the extra mile to service our customers and though this guest changed their reservation and their file did not show it, once we knew his desires, we moved other guests to accommodate his reservation within hours and the day before he arrived. We have a great cleaning service and they handle many properties in Poipu and have assured me their is no mildew in the shower on o the curtain. This is Hawaii and mildew can occur, but we do wash the shower curtains regularly. Now he is right about the screen door. It does need replacing, but until the handyman can get a new one installed, he has managed to make the old one work temporarily to keep the little flying creatures out of the kitchen! We are close to the Grand Hyatt. Their property starts one block at the end of our cul de sac, but we are NOT the Hyatt. If that is what a customer is looking for, they should book it. The cost is four to five times as much and the furniture newer, but their are no appliances in the Hyatt Guest rooms. Ours are not new, but they all work great. The King has a full stove, a great fridge, toaster oven, Microwave (fairly new) blender, toaster and all the cookware you need for cooking a great meal. And there are plenty of electrical outlets, free wi-fi and about 900 channels on the TV through Time Warner Oceanic Table and we have all the HBO, Showtime and sports packages included. Normally people love this unit. (check out the other reviews) Some stay for months at a time, but if someone has a bad attitude before they come and a bad attitude while they are there and take it home with them. You can expect a negative review as there needs to be a reason for the attitude and its easy to blame. We do have affordable suites at $95 and $85 and the location is really great in a nice neighborhood close to the ocean, with wild parrots in our coconut palms. Come and visit, you won't be disappointed. the management.

I stayed in the King Kam Suite for 4 nights and thought it was a great deal. I think this place is perfect for an independent traveler and offers excellent value. You get a big bedroom, a bathroom and full kitchen with a nice view out to the lawn. Everything felt secure and it's in a nice residential neighborhood convenient for beaches, restaurants, shopping and that kind of stuff. There's a lot of fun stuff within a ten minute walk. Cam was very accommodating and left loads of information along with an endless supply of soap, towels and other good beach stuff. I highly recommend it.

Had a great stay.

  • 4 of 5

We were looking for a casual, inexpensive place in Poipu which offered a full kitchen and on-site laundry facilities. After searching through dozens of listings, the King Kam seemed to be the best choice for us. We stayed for three months and had a wonderful time. The house is just a few minutes walk to tennis courts, beaches, swimming pool, bars, restaurants and beautiful sunsets. Our host was always available, friendly and helpful. Saved a bundle on rent and purchased some nice art with the savings.

That said, do not expect 5-star accommodations at a 2-star price. It is an older house, so if you are a finicky type you are better off paying much more for higher end accommodations. We were more than happy for what we got for our money, especially in the high season. Highly recommended for those who are young-at-heart and activity oriented. A reasonable alternative in a pricey area.

A Horrible Alternative to Accommodations in Poipu

  • 1 of 5

Don't believe the pictures! Having just left the beautiful North Shore and a VRBO condo in Princeville, we were very excited about our stay in Poipu. We arrived early, before check-in and drove by the house. It was dismal and unkept. I immediately went to the VRBO site to review the photos of the King Kam suite that we had reserved in hopes of alleviating my worries. With the clear memory of the posted pictures in my mind, we entered our room and I gasped. It was NOTHING like the photos. I felt like I had walked into a one of those scary hostel movies- the furniture looked like it was picked up from the side of the road, the bathroom and bedroom were dark, the closet was musty and the screens in the "kitchen" had vines coming through them. The backyard looked like it had not seen a gardener for years and there was trash all over the yard. And to top things off, the window over the sink in the lanai/kitchen looked straight into someone else's bedroom! We immediately found another place to stay for only $50 more a night- this new place had four walls, an ocean view and was bright and cheery. Even though I lost my money since the owner was unable to give me a refund, the new place I found was well worth it! Lesson learned- don't believe the pictures! And, there are plenty of other affordable accommodations in Poipu. Honestly, all we wanted was a clean, bright room with acceptable furnishings and four walls…the least the owner could do is fix the holes in the screens!

Owner's Response: Oh my, how to respond when everything the traveler said is the opposite to how it is. I just refer you to the other reviews. First, this person did not spend the night here. She walked in, looked around, and left. Without meaning to be defensive, let me start at the beginning. The pictures are accurate! They just are. I think she was looking for a condo unit it a building rather than a large home in a high end neighborhood. All the houses on this street are worth over a millioin and the landscaping is controlled by the Poipu Kai Resort Association. If an owner doesn't comply with their high standards, they are fined. We have lovely coconut palms and all corners, Pink Oleander, yellow and red hibiscus surrounding the yard and the grass looks like a putting green... This is a large two story former bed and breakfast with a lot of character and charm. The furniture, though not new, is high quality former 5 star hotel items, some still very expensive. The bedroom has two lamps and an overhead light with a fan. There is a double sliding glass door between the bedroom and the kitchen with a thin cotton drape, jungle green and if closed will block out the light. When fully open, there is nothing but light as the kitchen is a screened in Lanai with a large white bamboo screen that can be let down over the total screen or fully open letting in the light. If the bamboo is down and the curtains closed, It would be private and dark. There are also two lamps, an overhead fan with a light in the kitchen area. Turned on, there is light! There is NO WINDOW OVER THE SINK. There is a small black curtain covering an area where a shelf was removed. The other side of the wall is the bathroom area for the unit next door. There are absolutely no views into anyone's bedroom from any room in the Suite. The view in the back is plumeria trees and jungle. The gardner comes every two weeks, there are times when a weekly visit might be necessary! The bathroom also has three lights, one in the double sink area, one in the shower area and one in the large walk in closet. The floors are tile and we have a great cleaning service. If there is ever a musty smell it would be eliminated immediately. There simply isn't any. She cancelled the day she arrived and we have a 60 day cancellation policy. You can see this is the real reason for this negative review. Our cancellation is fair and the guest is allowed to use their vacation days anytime in the next year.
