THE BREATHTAKING, PITONS STARGROVES: THE PITONS MOUNTAINS, WORLD HERITAGE SITE

Soufriere House Rental Photos and Description

3 Bedrooms, 2 Bathrooms, Full Kitchen, Living Area, Private Pool, Open Design

Sometimes a house captures and expresses the spirit of a place so perfectly that it seems to be part of the natural landscape. Pitons Stargroves, perhaps the most unique villa in the Caribbean, is one such home. Located on a gently rolling hill near the tiny village of Morne La Croix, just a few miles from the sleepy port of Soufrière on the southwest side of St. Lucia - a region of small fishing villages, mountains and valleys, carpeted in rain forest.

Built from native materials - Greenheart wood from the St. Lucia rain forest and volcanic rock. The villa makes full advantage of its natural surroundings. The west side of the house is an 'open wall,' inviting one of the world's most breathtaking views into every room. It's also open (literally) to the fresh sea breezes of the Pitons valley and so well ventilated naturally that there's no need for air-conditioning.

About the House: Step out onto the villa's multiple decks and take in the panorama of the western cliff of the Gros Piton and the majestic Petit Piton - symbols of St. Lucia and a World Heritage Site - against the deep blue of the Caribbean Sea.

The villa has a spacious living room with a volcanic waterfall as its central theme and a full-size dining room that seats eight in complete comfort. There's a master bedroom suite, with a king-size bed, private sitting deck and full bathroom. Two guest bedrooms (one with a king-size bed, the other with twin beds) share an adjoining bathroom. The bathrooms are uniquely designed with shower stalls (but not tubs) cut into the volcanic rock. A third-story tower serves as a private sitting room or sleeping area. Because of the open design, expect to see small visitors now and then - innocent little lizards and frogs that come and go, happy to be left to their harmless ways, as you relax in the safe and cozy calm under the netting of your four-poster bed.

Pool and Staff: Pitons Stargroves was built for seclusion and intimacy and it's a tradition we seek to preserve. The villa has no television, telephone or internet connection. You'll need a cell phone to access the outside world and the staff. But our guests prefer it that way. Some never leave the villa grounds at all during their stay…with its inexhaustible scenery and setting, the villa is a real world unto itself. Enjoy your own scenic swimming pool fed by a small stone waterfall, for a private, refreshing dip just outside your door.

Comfort and privacy are guaranteed by the villa's 24-hour staff of two, Mary and Pious, who are available to clean, arrange sightseeing tours or to be your personal guides on island adventures. Mary, who serves as housekeeper, will be glad to cook for you as well in exchange of a fee. Please note that the guests are also responsible for buying groceries and drinks.

Activities and Notes: While there are no resort services or activities directly around the villa, the Jalousie Plantation Hotel and a superb public beach are only five minutes by car. The award-winning Dasheene Restaurant at the world famous Ladera Resort is also just a short drive away. For hiking enthusiasts, the Gros Piton Nature Trail sits right in the villa's backyard. For travel from the villa, you can arrange for a car rental, or use the services of Ben, our dedicated taxi driver (taxi fares extra).

Please note: This property is not suitable for young children because of the tower in the house and the open stairway to the pool.

Premier Piton Peace

  • 5 of 5
Our family of five (children 18, 20, 21yo) were stunned with the incredible architecture and resulting views upon arriving at this vacation home. Open-air, three-sided, and beautifully maintained, the home straddles the line between luxury and homey comfort. With daily cloudburst tropical rain and wind we were surprisingly never wet, and enjoyed a morning rainbow every day. With the pitons framing the vista to the Caribbean Sea, my wife and I could finally forget the busyness of New York life.
We took the advantage of hiring the manager, Pius, as our driver for touring and food shopping. Do not pass this up, he is well known throughout the Soufriere region, took us to the fishing marina to buy the morning's catch and he also arranged an impromtu tour of the World's Finest Chocolate cocoa plantation which is less than 1/2 mile away. He also acted as our vacation manager, suggesting which scuba guide, which water taxi, which grocery, which restaurant to use. The home's available cell phone meant he could drop us at the beach, volcano, or restaurant and he was always a phone call away.
His mother, Mary, is the home's cook and in-house concierge. She was present for meals upon request and provided laundry if you ask. Her cocoa tea was fabulous, and the jerk chicken and charcoal-grilled tuna dishes were authentic. The two, mother and son, were a highlight and deserved a generous tip.
Go to Sugar Beach. Climb the Gros Piton. Soak in the black-mud sulfur springs. Tour the botanical gardens. Fly down the zip lines. Sleep with the lulling winds and rest, you will want to return. We will.

Unique and Amazing Property!

  • 5 of 5
Staying at this property was like living in a luxury tree house nestled in a gorgeous rain forest with views of the ocean. They picked us up from the airport, took us shopping for groceries, and dropped us at the rental, it couldn't have been easier to get there. The property has amazing views, is very private, spacious, clean and comfortable. The housekeepers were super friendly and granted our every wish (as did all the locals). Just a short drive down the hill and you're at the most beautiful bay and resort. Having a pool was a big plus for cooling off in the afternoon and I loved the built-in stone showers. The kitchen was stocked with every appliance and tools you could need for cooking, we even cooked a leg of lamb. After dinner we would watch the sunset from the observation platform and wait for the stars to appear, a stunning show every night. So much to do in St. Lucia, we visited the Sulphur Springs and botanical gardens, snorkeled at Anse Chastanet, hiked a rain forest trail, had a gourmet meal at the beautiful Dasheene restaurant at Ladera Resort (built by the same architect as Piton Stargroves we discovered) and took a water taxi to Castries, where we walked around the artists market. It was fun seeing all the cows, goats, tree frogs and bats too. Renting this property was less expensive than staying at an all-inclusive resort and you get it all to yourself. I highly recommend this property to anyone wishing to visit St. Lucia and I plan to stay there again.

Very Pleased

  • 5 of 5
I never write reviews but I wanted to this time. My wife and with our 2 grown children stayed at Pitons Stragroves last week and we had a great time. We'll never forget the first time we walked through the front door and saw that view! The house is "rustic" but it has everything you need including 2 great caretakers. Mary and Pious are amazing people who really do care about you and your comfort. Renting a car is a must because the house is remote and not within walking distance of anything. The Sugar Beach Resort(formerlly Jalouise) is at the bottom of the mountain about 1-2 miles from the house and it is a beautiful place to hang out but I would NOT walk back up the mountain. We used our jeep to explore the island but we were always glad to get back to the house. Stock up at the grocery store in Vieux Fort and really pay attention to how to get to the house if you're going to venture out on your own. The directions to the house that Oasis Marigot provides are not correct as I think they try to take you over a bridge that has been washed out. Plan to have drinks at Laderra for sunset one night while there. It's a 20 minute drive and an incredible resort that was apparently designed by the same guy who designed this house. Go and have fun!

A Room With a View

  • 5 of 5
It's difficult to know where to start when writing this review.
The house - It's beyond words. Coming up the drive, you can see that you are in for something special but absolutely nothing can prepare you for what happens when you come through the front door and witness the most spectacular view you will ever have. It is epic both to the imagination and the actual scale of the view. We were planning a beach heavy vacation and ened up staying in the house most of the time because it was so relaxing and gorgeous to take in. Mary cooked for us a few nights and she was spectacular. I'm not even going to refer to it as "service" because it wasn't. It was outstanding care taking and it made me understand what hospitality really means. I nearly cried when we left because I wanted Mary in my life all the time... She's so generous and warm. Pious was so great too. He was always around to drive with us into town if we needed help with directions or to navigate the island. The two of them made the VERY secluded location feel super safe and that our stuff was well watched while we were out. Two out of the three bedrooms are more like parlors where a person could receive guests in a private setting inside of the house with ample seating. And I sat up top of the tower getting to know my best friend all over again while we were hovering in the sky somewhere between the Pitons in a vast modernist jungle enclave. There is NOTHING this place does not have and if you manage to find something you need, Mary or Pious will have it taken care of before you know it. There were only three of us that stayed, but we managed to utilize all of the living quarters and bedrooms because the house is designed to be used, so it's not just amazing in pictures it's totally decompressing and comfortable to be in. It took me a couple of days to remember to wander around and sitting in the landscaped property under a cocoa tree soaking in the views was equally fantastic. And for the quality of the destination, the proximity to the nearest resort beach and the care that you will be shown, this place is actually surprisingly affordable. We've never stayed anywhere nicer or more cozy in all of our travels. Period. If it's a toss up between this and a resort and you want luxury and calm, do yourself a favor and just grab this place while you can.

Wedding!

  • 5 of 5
This is such an amazing property, I've never imagined such a great place. Be prepared though! This house is literally wide open. It's slightly intimidating. The entire western side of the house is wide open. Think of it as a 4 story treehouse. We loved it. The caretakers, Mary and Pious, are incredible. Mary cooked us an incredible dinner and they were just wonderful. Make sure you rent a car(they'll hook you up). It's roughly 1/2 hour to drive to town, but the house itself is pretty remote. When the taxi service picks you up (Ben's), pay attention driving into there as it is remote. The house is beautiful, the grounds are beautiful, the view is amazing. We got married there. We had grand ideas of getting married on the beach before we got there, but we ended up doing it right at the house. It's that great. We built a bouquet right out the yard flowers, which Mary helped us with. Bring CD's. they have a nice sound system wired through the house. Easy access(same 1/2 hour drive) to all the sights, Volcano, mud baths, mineral springs, nice restaurants, town. Just be prepared for a bumpy ride in and a wide open house. Don't be intimidated, you'll enjoy your stay.

Simply Stunning!

  • 5 of 5
We loved the Pitons Stargroves as soon as we saw it; nestled on the side of Gros Piton overlooking breaktaking views of Petit Piton and the Caribean Sea it was everything we hoped for for our honeymoon! I can honestly say that we explored the west cost of the island thoroughly (including nearby resorts) and there is no where along that coastline with better views! The villa had everything we needed and more, it was so large and being completely open on one side providing continious stunning views from wherever we were within the building. We watched some cracking thunderstorms circle the bay, saw some amazing sunsets and woke up to beautiful double rainbows over the sea. It's the sort of view you could never get enough of!

Aside from the scenery, one of the highlights for us was the wildlife! Being open and surrounded by forest the villa was home to many lizards, and tree frogs, amazing insects, hummingbirds and bats often visited (dont worry the netting over the four poster bed ensures an uninterrupted sleep). In fact I dont think we'd ever slept so well as we did on this holiday. There's something incredible about going to sleep to the sounds of the rainforest and the openness of the villa meant it felt like sleeping outside but with all the comforts! The ceiling fan combined with a breeze from the mountains ensures a comfortable nights sleep.

The openness of the villa is what makes it so great but I have to admit that it was also one of the things we were a little concerned by when we first arrived as we were so used to having the security of four walls around us. However, the locals are very friendly and seem to know Pious and Mary well (the staff) so after a few days we completely relaxed. Also whenever we went out (which was every day with some days being quite long) either Mary or Pious would stay in the villa and look after it which gave us piece of mind (as you can only lock the door from the inside). Mary and Pious were incredibly helpful throughout our stay and made the visit even more enjoyable.

I would recommend the villa to anyone who wants to be surrounded by breaktaking scenery and stay in luxury accomodation but is happy to embrace the wildlife! We also chose this villa because we didnt want the artifical and restrictive experience of a resort. We hired a Jeep and came and went as we pleased so we got to explore the island but still enjoy the best of the resorts. We got so much more for our money this way!
