Overview

Lajitas House Rental Photos and Description

Lodge, 3 Bedrooms + Convertible bed(s), 2 Baths, (Sleeps 8-10)

Terlingua House is located in the heart of the desert mountain country of West Texas. For the price of a nice single hotel room, this unique guesthouse is like having your own personal lodge for your trip. It is a three-bedroom, two-bath, adobe-style property with full kitchen; each located in a separate building. This unique layout enables you to socialize and dine together and retreat to the privacy of your own separate rooms for some solitude. It's almost like renting a small resort rather than just a vacation home or hotel room.

Although most come here to get away from it all, Terlingua House has all the comforts of home:

* Fully stocked kitchen with full sized fridge, stove/oven (apartment sized), microwave, dishwasher and all the dishes, utensils and cooking requirements one would need.

* Washers/dryers - exploring and adventure means you may need to do laundry

* Wireless Internet, cable TV (including big screen TV) - when you want to plug back in to the real world

* An upper level deck for mountain viewing and star gazing

* A beautiful, covered lower courtyard connecting two buildings; complete with 2 grills for cooking and dining outside

* An outdoor sitting area with fire pit (bring your own wood).

Stroll up the hill on the property and view the changing colors of the Chisos Mountains during the spectacular sunrises and sunsets.

Terlingua House is located two miles west of Terlingua, Texas between Big Bend National Park and Big Bend Ranch State Park. This safe and secure 15 acre, semi-secluded property with easy access, has a grand view of the Chisos Mountains of Big Bend National Park while still being only minutes away from restaurants and local river rafting, hiking, biking and jeep tour outfitters. Terlingua Ghost town is a couple minutes drive down the road. There's even a pizza place at the bottom of the road - an easy walk for dinner and drinks.

If you like Big bend I am confident you will like Terlingua House. We strive to keep it cool, fun, functional and clean. After 12 years we have many repeat customers, many recommendations and about once a year - a whiner! If you have never been to Big Bend, it is truly one of the most unique and fascinating areas in Texas and the country for that matter - hence the national and state parks. It is also one of the most vast and remote areas in the country. It is - an adventure. Whether you stay with us or one of the other lodging accommodations in the area, go with the understanding that you will be, and we are working in, an area that teeters between the 21st century and the 19th century. This is part of the fun, part of the adventure - part of the allure of Big Bend.

We would love to have you stay at Terlingua House. If you would like to rent please do the following in this order: (1) Check the calendar here on VRBO for availability during the time you want to go, if available then; (2) Go to our website at www.TerlinguaHouse.com and fill out the rental agreement form (or direct link http://www.terlinguahouse.com/reservations/agreement.htm) and finally; (3) Monday through Friday 8AM - 5PM please call the office at 325-473-4400 with a MC or Visa handy to pay and confirm your reservation. Note that the 25% deposit is non-refundable but can be used at a later date, the 75% balance is due and payable 10 days prior to your arrival.

** IMPORTANT NOTE: VRBO Instant quote does not calculate our specials correctly. A 'rent 2 get 3rd free' special means you have to rent two nights to get the third free. Unfortunately VRBO calculator will average the price across all nights and it results in a discrepancy. For a true quote please contact us directly. Thank you and sorry for the inconvenience. The same applies for 'rent 2 get 2 free'.

Thank you for considering Terlingua House for your Big Bend trip.

About Cara or Bud

Bud Johnson and Friends are the owners of Terlingua House.

Bud lives on a ranch just outside of Bronte, Texas (between San Angelo and Abilene) with his partner, Cate, a red dog and a white dog, a bunch of cattle and an old horse. He is a geologist by trade and also dabbles as an entrepreneur.

Cara or Bud purchased this house in 2003

Why Cara or Bud chose Lajitas

I fell in love with the area and then the property back in the 80's and it has been a labor of love to get it to the high standard that it is today. There's something almost magical or spiritual when you watch the sunrise and sunset from here - not to mention the star gazing on a clear night. There's nothing like it. Terlingua House is a deluxe property on 15 acres with spectacular views, easy access, all the amenities and plenty of water. Both water and access can be an issue in the area. It's the perfect place to get away from it all and experience an amazing part of Texas that many don't even know exist. It's just minutes from shopping, dining and tour outfitters and easy access for day trips. Plus, you're fully connected to the outside world here with Internet and satellite TV.

What makes this house unique

Unique, lodge-like adobe style buildings house 3 separate sleeping quarters and kitchen/dining area. It's like renting a lodge or small resort for the same price as a decent hotel room. This allows you to socialize, dine and entertain as a group with the added benefit of retreating to your own space for some quiet time. Just minutes from shopping and dining, it's a perfect place to get away from it all but still be connected with wireless Internet, satellite TV other comforts of home. The sunsets/sunrises and star gazing are spectacular from this property.

Great Place to Stay

  • 4 of 5

We loved the house and the beautiful views. We loved how close it was to Big Bend National Park. There was 7 of us in the house and we had plenty of space. The only downside was that the hot water in the shower stopped working on the 2nd day in the bedroom across from the kitchen, but we used the other bathroom shower and it had plenty of hot water. We will definately try to come back to Terlingua again and we would stay at Terlingua house.

Owner's Response: We're very happy you enjoyed your stay. Thank you for informing us of the hot water issue - we'll have someone look at that as soon as possible. We would have been happy to send someone out to take a look during your stay. We appreciate that you chose to stay with us during your Terlingua/Big Bend vacation and we look forward to hosting you again soon.

Awesome place with bad rental agency

  • 3 of 5

We arrived at the house on a Wednesday for an eight day stay and were blown away. Beautiful views and comfortable accommodations in the desert. Although a few issues arose during our stay (see below) we were overall pleased with our stay.

* The bathrooms:

* The toilet in the "Studio" bathroom would not flush by Saturday. We called the rental agency's number on Sunday who send a maid to "fix" the problem while we were out exploring the area, but no change when we returned. The agency did not give us an update, so we called again. We were told that a plumber would be out on the following Monday, but none ever came. At that point we just figured that the agency did not care about the guests so we just used the more rustic bathroom across the driveway between the two satellite bedrooms for the remainder of our stay.

* The Studio bathroom has an exterior door whose latch doesn't catch most of the time, which led to the door opening from gusty winds. This led to bugs in both the bed and bath rooms.

* The shower in the bathroom between the two satellite bedrooms was nasty and full of dead bugs.

* AC

The air conditioner fan was broken in the bedroom farthest from the Studio.

Owner's Response: We’re happy to hear that the you were overall pleased with your stay. We strive to provide top notch accommodations and service at Terlingua House. Upon reading this, it came as a bit of a surprise to hear that the toilet wouldn’t flush, as the guest communicated to us during their stay that the there was a small leak at the base of the toilet. I told the guest that the maid and her husband (who is our maintenance man) would be by to have a look at the problem as soon as they could. They went by Sunday afternoon and looked at the problem (nobody was at the house, and no one was answering phones- a voicemail was left on the cell phone we had on file) but it being a Sunday and living in Terlingua there isn’t a whole lot of options as far as tool rental and parts to fix the issue available. The maintenance people called and informed me of the situation and advised me that the issue would have to wait until the guests were not in the house because they would have to turn the water off to fix the issue. I called numerous times without any answer. The guests called again on Monday, I told them that if our maintenance man could get the parts on Monday he would come and try to replace it with them there if possible. He was unable to get any parts until Tuesday, the day they left. As always, we did our best to communicate to the guests to resolve the issue. We personally visited and inspected Terlingua House a few days after your stay. The latch on the bathroom door works fine, it just needs to be closed properly. We do recognize that it could be improved, so we’re installing a more secure mechanism to ensure guest comfort. We apologize if there were bugs in the shower - it seems odd since we have a near non-stop stream of guests at and therefore regular cleaning as well. With the colder nights, it could have been an anomaly of nature. We had to smile that you called the 2nd bathroom “rustic”, as some of the guests prefer using that one (note to other potential guests reading this: We wouldn’t use rustic to describe this bathroom as it has modern plumbing plus a new washer/dryer - it’s just smaller than the other bathroom). There didn’t seem to be an issue with any of the air conditioners or heaters in the house, but we are having them inspected with their bi-annual servicing very soon. We hope this addresses your concerns. Thank you again for staying at Terlingua House.

Great place

  • 5 of 5

We visited big bend country on 4th July weekend and were 2 families with young children. The house is situated on a hillock and offers very picturesque views of the landscape. There were picnic benches, fire pit and outdoor/patio furniture and we spent long hours outside in the each night stargazing. The bedrooms and bathrooms were clean and had enough linens. The kitchen was good with enough tableware, plates and pots etc. The house also has washers/dryers. The house is not too far (around 25/30 miles) from Big Bend N.P.

This was our 1st trip to big bend country but wont certainly be last. We will definitely come back to stay here and recommend this place to friends.

Awesome Place!!

  • 5 of 5

My daughter is getting married next year and it was our last big daddy/daughter trip just the two of us. We could not have stayed at a better place in the Big Bend area. Although it was just the two of us and we didn't need as much space as Terlingua House provided....we especially enjoyed all the outdoor areas there including the deck on top of the house. The house was clean and very well-stocked with everything we needed. It was a convenient drive from the house to Far Flung Adventures and Big Bend River Tours. I would highly recommend this place to anyone visiting Big Bend. It would be especially great for two or three couples or large families since it provides the privacy of totally separate buildings for each bedroom. Thank you for a very enjoyable 5-night stay!!

Another great stay at Terlingua House!

  • 4 of 5

Our family just enjoyed spending another wonderful spring break at Terlingua House - this was our third stay visiting since 2006. I think this property and a visit to Terlingua and Big Bend country is all about expectations... we camped outside the park the first couple of times we visited this area and while rustic and down to earth - we wanted more comfort. After our first stay at Terlingua House, we felt as if we were Brewster County royalty. It's private and quiet (when cars aren't passing along the highway below). It's ideal if traveling with a couple of families or extended family as there are three separate sleeping areas with a semi-connecting bath (2 baths total). The drive to BBNP is a breeze, the ghost town is just a couple of miles down the road and Lajitas is a short drive west. The owner has acknowledged that there are some areas for improvement and they are being implemented but, in our opinion, any minor inconveniences are far outweighed by the many pluses this property has to offer... walk up the slope and take in the sunrise over the Chisos, have a beverage on the deck above the patio at the end of the day, make a small camp fire in the rock ringed fire pit next to the studio. We really treasure Terlingua House for its simplicity and enduring desert charm. Thanks also to the house manager, John, who stopped by a couple of times during our visit to help us with some minor incidentals. Christmas wish... a light over the sink in the kitchen.

UNSAFE, VERY REMOTE, UNCOMFORTABLE

  • 1 of 5

A LANDLORD SHOULD PROVIDE A TENANT WITH REASONABLE SECURITY WHEN RENTING A RESIDENCE. TERLINGUA HOUSE IS ON A VERY RURAL ROAD, UNMARKED AND DIFFICULT TO FIND. THERE ARE NO SECURITY GATES SURROUNDING THIS PROPERTY NOR ARE THERE ANY STURDY LOCKS ON ANY OF THE DOORS AND NO EXTRA BOLTS TO MAKE TENANTS FEEL SECURE AT NIGHT IN THE OUTDOOR BEDROOMS IN SUCH A REMOTE LOCATION.

NO ONE GREETED US UPON ARRIVAL FOR "CHECK IN". THERE IS NO PRINTED INSTRUCTION MATERIAL FOR THE HEATERS IN THE BATHROOMS WHICH WERE NON-OPERATIONAL THE FIRST NIGHT IN LESS THAN 30 DEGREE WEATHER. THERE IS ONLY ONE INTERIOR BATHROOM; THE OTHER ONE IS LOCATED OUTSIDE WITH TWO UNLOCKED DOORS, THE HORRIBLE TUB HAS MOLDY, RUSTY PIPES WITH A NASTY SHOWER, PLUS THERE IS CRUMBLING PLASTER ON ONE WALL. NO TOWEL RACKS ARE IN EITHER BATHROOM, NO WASTEBASKETS IN OUTDOOR BATHROOM AND ONE BEDROOM. THEY LIST 2 BATHROOMS ON THEIR WEBSITE; HOWEVER, WHAT THEY FAIL TO MENTION IS THAT ONE IS ONLY ACCESSIBLE FROM OUTDOORS. AND, THAT SINGLE BATHROOM FUNCTIONS AS THE ONLY ONE FOR POSSIBLY 10 PEOPLE IF ONE INCLUDES THE TWO OUTSIDE BEDROOMS AND 2 BEDS INSIDE THE KITCHEN. GUESTS ARE REQUIRED TO HAUL TRASH DOWN A HILL TO A DUMPSTER. THE SO-CALLED LINENS ARE RAGGED, TORN, MISMATCHED, UNACCEPTABLE AND SCRATCHY. THE OUTDOOR FURNITURE IS DIRTY & THE GREEN IRON CHAIRS/TABLE ARE RUSTY AND DIRTY. ONE OF THE CHAIRS WAS BROKEN WHICH MADE IT VERY UNCOMFORTABLE TO SIT AND ENJOY A MEAL OUTDOORS. THE TERRAIN AND SURROUNDING VIEWS ARE RUGGEDLY BEAUTIFUL; HOWEVER, THE LACK OF SECURITY MAKES THE AREA UNSAFE TO ENJOY ESPECIALLY AT NIGHT.

Owner's Response: This rental ended with us charging the renter extra for leaving the property littered with used feminine products and dental floss. It was not pretty. We are pushing 1000 rentals with many of our guests repeat customers. We have two independent heating systems, electricity and propane. The propane is basically used as a backup system now, the electric heaters work fine. In this case the propane tank had been filled just before they arrived. Our propane supplier turned off the tank while filling the tank then failed to turn it back on. Although the electricity and electric heaters were working, these folks wanted the propane heater running, it failed due to the supplier leaving the main valve off. It is unfortunate that it happened but no one was in danger of sleeping in the cold. Over the past 10 years we have continued to make improvements, variable towels has been a consequence, as recollection serves, there is both green and brown towels, they are good towels. Building construction and design is unique. About half of the property is built of true adobe - mud bricks formed by hand and stacked individually then covered in stucco. Not just the design but the actual construction is consistent with ancient building methods dating back thousands of years. A couple of consequences are exposed pipes and clay swelling. The shower pipes can't be run in the adobe walls so they are exposed on the inside. The pipes are copper and copper tarnishes. At two of the joints there was tarnishing, I think we got that wiped down pretty good. When adobe clays are exposed to water, like around a shower, they tend to absorb the water and swell. This micro swelling has the consequence of causing the paint to peel. And there was at least two square inches of peeling paint. That was adequately cleaned up also. As to security with regard to the shared bathroom, we don't split the property up with different guests. When you rent Terlingua House, you rent the whole property, you are not sharing with anyone you didn't come with. No one has broken the bathroom latch in 10 years. Big Bend, Terlingua (physiography and culture) and this house are all unique. It isn't the Anatole in Dallas nor is it meant to be but for 10 years we have addressed every issue that has arisen, some are easy, some not so, easy but we persist. In the case of this renter we had at least 15 phone calls plus extra trips to the house to try to accommodate their needs. We were thanked with a disgusting mess to clean
