We are a family of 5 from Ireland and we fell in love with Venice. Our apartment is on the top floor of a 3 storey building, in the Castello area of Venice. It has been completely renovated by a Venetian architect in 2009 and now has all home comforts, but all the character and quirks of the original building maintained. We added a roof-top terrace or Venetian Altana, and this gives a private space from which to sit out with coffee at breakfast or enjoy a glass of wine as the heat goes out of the day. The Altana looks out over the roof-tops of Venice, as far as the San Marco Campanile and out to the Dolomite mountains beyond. It is rare indeed in Venice to have an Altana, and it is a prized addition to any property. The apartment has air conditioning and central heating, a fully fitted kitchen and a high level of comfort and luxury throughout. The master bedroom has an en-suite bathroom and generous wardrobe space. The second bedroom contains single beds (as does the master) and both rooms can be configured for couples or friends sharing. The third bedroom has generous bunk beds, and a travel cot is available for babies. The original roof timbers of the building have been painstakingly restored, and the original roof tiles removed, cleaned and replaced. No aspect of design or comfort has been neglected in this wonderful family home, which is bright, spacious and airy.
It is a perfect spot from which one can experience the real Venice, where washing is hung out early morning, and the smells of lunch cooking waft through the square by mid morning. Via Garibaldi is 2 minute's walk away, and this bustling commercial street has all the services one could want for cooking and living: a fruit & vegetable stall on a barge, fishmongers, butchers, bakeries and plenty of friendly bars and restaurants. There is a supermarket 20 seconds from the apartment, and a small trattoria across the square. You will feel like you are a true Venetian as you get used to the slower pace of life in a city with no cars, and no stress...
We have recently installed a broadband WiFi network, a BLIK internet radio, and a Samsung flat screen tv, with DVD /Blu Ray player. We have a small DVD library too. There is wisteria growing up on the altana and a herb garden. And even a yoga mat for those who might like to do yoga in the early morning up on the altana.
An Irish family who have a tiny corner of Venice to themselves. We visit when we can, and are happy to share the unique experience that is Venetian life with like minded guests. We hope our visitors enjoy their time in this most special of cities.
The Owner purchased this apartment in 2006
We bought in the Castello area of Venice because it is still truly authentically Venetian and although the area is free from the dense crowds and glass shops at every turn, it is still only a short stroll back to the thick of the action. It is wonderful to visit San Marco Square and the Rialto, but to escape back to the tranquility that is Castello at the end of a long day of walking!
The property is so bright and airy, sunshine and light floods the spaces within. The Altana is a private spot from which to get a sense of the city, as one looks out at the vaporetto boats moving around the lagoon and the Arsenale shipyard below. The apartment is a real family home, and we enjoy cooking big meals with lots of the local wine to add to the experience..
The apartment was fantastic! What a great location - we loved that it was outside of the tourist area, yet a short walk to everything. The little supermarket around the corner was perfect for all of our needs and the guys loved checking out the meat shops - had great veal meatballs one night and another night a rolled roast-type thing made from sausage, ham, chicken and bacon - all with pasta of course. We had some wonderful meals at the apartment - everything we needed was there. And we all thought that the beds were the most comfortable that we had ever slept on in Europe - even the pull out couch. Thank you so much for allowing us to stay in your Venice rental!
We stayed here for a weekend in November with 4 adults and 2 children. The place was perfect for all of us. The kids loved the bunk beds and the variety of toys and movies in the house. I would highly recommend if you are bringing children. Don't let the stairs to the top keep you away, the views are fantastic. The apartment has a local feel. There is a small supermarket nearby, a local trattoria right across the square (which had good food and wine), and the fruits and vegetable barge was fantastic!
The apartment is within easy walking distance to St. Mark's Square and there are more than enough restaurants, shops, etc. within walking distance.
Eileen's instructions were spot on and we had no trouble finding the apartment. I will warn that it's a tough walk if you are carrying a lot of luggage. We followed the warnings of others and took backpacks and hand held luggage. It made the trip from the vaporetto to the apartment easier.
My only warning is that it can take a long time to get from the apartment to the entrance of venice (up to 45 minutes on some vaporetto routes). We didn't have a problem with it except when departing. High tides caused some of the routes to not be available and we had to hop a couple boats to make our bus in time. This isn't the owner's fault but I pass it on for future travelers. Plan better if the alarms sound at night.
Overall, an amazing apartment in a great location! Highly recommend it to those wishing to experience the true Venice, but also have close proximity to the tourist areas.
Our family of four stayed in Eileen's lovely, stylish, welcoming apartment in September 2014. We had a fabulous time. Staying in Castello, away from the hordes, was wonderful. I felt we were having a true authentic experience- we bought out fruit off the barge in the morning- the barge man gave our little girl some peaches that proved to be some of the best I have ever had!
Getting there was a bit of an epic hike from the vaporetto but it was worth it! Eileen's instructions and tips meant that it was very straightforward though!
The flat was lovely. I would have bought half the art on the walls if I had the cash. The bathrooms were lovely, the kitchen was great and Eileen had left some basic stores for us. All in all it was a lovely stay in a beautiful apartment.
The views from the altarna were beautiful. We just sat up there and watched the world go by. the sunsets over the rooftops of Venice were amazing.
I should also mention that Eilleen was a delight to deal with. She always got back to me quickly and her tips and information for our stay were really helpful.
When we go back to Venice I will always stay at Campo Ruga.
Our family of six stayed in this lovely apartment in Venice. I made the travel arrangements and my husband was a bit nervous as we climbed the old staircase up to the top floor of the building, but once we opened the door, all anxiety was relieved by the clean and classy apartment before us. Eileen was a pleasure to communicate with prior to our stay and provided a nice set of information about the apartment and the area. We decided to try one of the restaurants on her list one night, and since no street name was given, we just asked a local and even though we don't speak Italian and they didn't speak English, hand signals did the trick and we found the place! I loved looking out of the apartment windows at the square below and my youngest liked watering the plants on the altana. We enjoyed our stay here and I would recommend this apartment.
Had a fabulous girly break at Campo Ruga in January. It was our first experience of Venezia and we couldn't have asked for a better one! This stylish but homely apartment in the residential area of Castello proved a great base and we felt we had very authentic Venetian experience staying in this location, as it was away from the main tourist drag and amid the locals. We splashed out on a private transfer from the airport and they can drop you off just around the corner which was perfect, highly recommended as practically door to door! The roof terrace is a real treat, great views of the surrounding characterful buildings and washing lines, even better I imagine in the summer. It is a short stroll from Via Garibaldi, which was the perfect street to get your morning espresso, or a Spritz or two at one of the many small bars in the evening! The main areas of Venice are then only a pleasant stroll or vaparetto ride away. There is a supermarket just around the corner from the apartment which is handy and there is a fruit and veg boat moored by the Via Garibaldi too. Eileen and David thank you so much for sharing this special spot with us all! We will be back!
A beautiful, clean, spacious apartment located in the heart of Venice but away from the crowds. Overlooking a quiet square, it's the perfect place to retreat to after a day of losing yourself in atmosphere of the city. Locating the place was easy thanks to the clear directions and it is exactly as you'd expect from the photos, clean with plenty of light and space. What the photos don't capture though is the atmosphere, sipping a coffee on the roof terrace listening to bells toll through the mist, looking across a skyline that has remained the same for hundreds of years, it's easy to lose yourself. There's a well stocked super market literally just around the corner and a cafe on the square where you can sit out with a glass of red wine watching the world go by.
Eileen answered all our questions promptly and the internet access was great for up to the minute info on things to do or changes to water bus timetables. Check out the DVD collection for a selection of films shot in and around the locations you'll probably have visited earlier in the day!
We had the most wonderful experience at the Campo Ruga home. It is elegant, airy, full of light and very clean and comfortable. Its ideally located so that you can walk anywhere (especially convenient for the Biennale). We had 6 people total and we all slept and lived comfortably. The kitchen is very inviting to cook and eat in, so much that we ended up preferring to cook for ourselves most nights. Eileen has created a very comprehensive local guide, we had no problem getting around and finding what we needed in the neighborhood. It was often entertainment enough just to sit on the roof or at the kitchen window with a glass of local wine and watch the dramatic cloudscape in the shifting light. So beautiful. I made the mistake of leaving a wallet full of cash behind at the apartment when we checked out- Eileen went to great lengths, all the way from Ireland, to ensure the money was safely stored and returned to me in the US. We will most certainly go straight back to Campo Ruga if we return to Venice.
