Photos and Description of the Tralee & North Kerry vacation cottage rental
Cottage, 3 Bedrooms + Convertible bed(s), 2 Baths, (Sleeps 5-7)

Cottage Mary Rose is a beautiful 18th century, white-washed, thatched roof cottage. One of Ireland's few remaining, it is what you dream of when thinking of Ireland. Nestled in the pastoral valley of Mount Eagle with a stream running through the peaceful cottage garden. We boast an all natural garden. It is surrounded by its original dry stone walls and fuchsia.

You are welcomed by the bright red double door. As you enter, you get the feeling that you have stepped back in time. With its stone fireplace and high lofted ceilings in the sitting room it is a great room for conversation and games. Antiques fill the cottage with traditional and comfortable furniture as well. It is amazing to think of what this cottage has survived. It has truly come a long way from traditional Irish life to having the luxuries we dream of. There is a Jacuzzi tub and dishwasher as well as a bright red Aga stove so you can actually enjoy cooking. Truly an ideal place to call home while exploring the many treasures of CountyKerry. Internet now available.

About The Owner

My family is of Irish descent. Our first time to the Emerald Isle was in 1996. I fell in love with it as every one does and knew then that some day I would have a home there.........a Thatched Cottage. Being involved in architechture,I had always been fascinated in thatched roof cottages. When I purchased Cottage Mary Rose in 2000 I never realised how much I would fall in love with it. It is my true passion, named after my mother, Mary Rose Bowler, I wanted to share this amazing bit of Irish History with others....

The Owner purchased this cottage in 2000
Why The Owner chose Tralee & North Kerry

I wanted a historic thatched cottage off of the beaten track but close enough to tourist attractions. I am an avid gardener and knew that this location was perfect for a great garden. There are fuschia & camelias every where! The stream was the frosting on the cake. So dramatic because of the ravine and rushing water below. The sound is so calming and tranquil. I preferred the small village of Cordal because you get a TRUE feel of the real Ireland instead of the touristy areas. I was happy enough with the Church and Kearney's Grocer.....I thought all it needed was a pub......my dream was answered and Hughes Pub was built by Sean Hughes a local Cordal lad in 2006. It is a beautiful pub and great for local gab, a great Pint and a game of pool. All with in a 5 minute walk. Our great cottage has stood the test of time. I love sharing this peice of Heaven with others.........

What makes this cottage unique

Cottage Mary Rose is a wonderful blend of a living bit of history. Add to this a Jacuzzi tub, rain shower and hot tub over looking a stream and you have it all. We even provide WiFi internet connection. Large kitchen which is wonderful for entertaining. The Heritage cooker is probably the best method of cooking food. Besides the Irish farm table there is also a front patio for dining and the deck where you can dine with the sounds of the peaceful stream and song of the birds. Nothing beats relaxing in the hot tub at the end of a long day while enoying the stars above...........absolute Heaven.............

Cottage Mary Rose- Relaxing getaway

5 of 5
Submitted: November 7, 2012 Stayed: November 2012
Myself and my boyfriend stayed in cottage Mary Rose in the first weekend of November 2012. We found the cottage absolutely charming and loved the open stone fireplace, the quaint kitchen and the little authentic touches of Irish charm everywhere! The balcony out the back with the running hot tub was amazing especially in the cold weather! We forced ourselves to leave the house once for a meal in Brownes pub in Castleisland which was an unexpected find and absolutely delicious! I know people have for some reason complained about a damp smell but I think they may be forgetting its an extremely old thatched cottage.....you might consider a hotel if you are looking for flawless perfection??IWill definitely come back again at some stage for longer and invite friends/family :-)

I am filling this out again as my computer was acting up and not sure if you recieved it. Well i want to say the the Cottage Mary Rose was wonderful we really enjoyed staying there. The care taker Tom and his family were really very nice people. If we needed anything Tom was right there. There was 4 of us and we had plenty of room.We enjoyed ourselfs so much we did not want to leave and really hope to be able to return there next year. I loved the oldness and the mordern of the cottage.it was out just a bit from the town but that was no problem as there was a store just a walk way away and also a pub which my son met some friends there. I loved the creek that went thru the back garden and all the beautiful flowers i felt at home there. Well as i said it is a beautiful place to spend time in and as i said i would and will go again, the near by town was nice but i love going to Killarney to go and here the music and to walk around the stores. The people over there were just so warm and friendly Marge

A Nice Stay in Ireland

Our family stayed here for a week and the location was a good one for day trips through County Kerry, Cork and Limerick. The cottage is quaint and appointed with all necessary items you'll need, including a washer and dryer, which comes in handy. Being an old, historical home, it comes with its own minor quirks which mostly add to the charm. Overall the home was clean. The local caretakers are very nice and helpful. The only drawback was that the home was a bit musty. This could be due to the unusually wet summer Ireland was experiencing. This was my first time staying in a thatched roof stone cottage and one I will remember fondly.

Owner's Response: Keeping in mind that Cottage Mary Rose was built of stone and limestone it has to be aired out while staying there. The windows can be adjusted to be open about a quarter of an inch or fully open. The heating system will keep it very warm and allowing fresh air when you are there to enter will keep it very fresh. The dampness does have much to do with it in any Irish home not just the cottage. We do have a dehumidifier in the stable bed room that we strongly suggest running in the day time. This helps a lot. I will make sure to add this to our notes at the cottage. Very happy that you enjoyed your stay!

For my mother's 80th birthday, I wanted to surprise her with a trip to Ireland, and a stay in a cottage very similar to the one she lived in as a child....also in County Kerry. She had told me so many stories about her early home, and her memories were so dear that I spent a good deal of time researching rental cottages all over Ireland. Eventually I happened to find Cottage Mary Rose, and inspired by the photos and descriptions, I called the owner to gather more details. I was probably quite a nuisance with my back and forth calls to him, but you would never know that by his polite demeanor and his eagerness to fill me in on any detail possible. So, we booked and we went to his lovely cottage in County Kerry, and if ever my expectations were far exceeded in every way possible, this was it!. My mother was thrilled beyond belief, and felt as if she was re-visiting her childhood home with all its warmth and charm.....but did mention that Cottage Mary Rose was actually "far more lovely" than her cottage had been. My daughter and her husband, both architects, also came for the stay, and they marveled in the solid structure of the cottage, the richness of the original fireplace...not to mention the spectacular gardens, the deck overlooking an interesting stream complete with soothing water current sounds to relax us when we sat in the crystal clear waters of that amazing hot tub. The kitchen was amazing for cooking our own meals, and all in all, we could not have imagined a more perfect place for our stay! None of us wanted to leave at the end of our stay, but the happy ending is that we are booking again for early 2012! We adored the folks at Kearney's, and spent much time chatting with the quaint folks at the local pub, just a short walk from the cottage. We felt like "locals", which was a bonus to our already amazing stay at Cottage Mary Rose. So many attractions within a short drive, including Ladie's View atop the Lakes of Killarney, the Ring of Kerry, Muckross House....and Tralee and Killarney are just a hop and a skip away. The cottage caretaker lives just across from Kearney's, and what a charming gentleman he is! Anything we needed, including travel information, he was the "answer man"! He and the other locals filled us in on the rather eccentric & legendary original owner of the cottage, not to mention the wonderful tales of fiddling, dancing, drinking and poker playing that took place within the walls of the cottage. Amazing place!

Cottage Mary Rose is the best!

5 of 5
Submitted: July 14, 2011 Stayed: April 2011
Spending a week at Cottage Mary Rose has become an annual event for our family, something to which we look forward to eagerly.  We've been guests there in Spring 2009, Spring 2010, Spring 2011 and plan on returning in Spring 2012.

Prior to posting my own review, I read a recent review entitled "Wet and Nasty" written by "SilverMama" and was appalled by what I consider complaints completely lacking in any foundation.   Coincidentally, only a week separated our stay from when this person stayed there.   That allows me to counter their complaints with full knowledge of the conditions of this wonderful cottage at that time.

We've always found the cottage to be extremely comfortable, clean and maintained to the highest standard.  The caretaker is easily reached and extremely responsive to any request or need.  In the rare event any kind of repair is needed, he takes care of it as soon as is humanly possible.

There was NO hole in the roof of the stable bedroom.  This is an absolute, positive fact.   This bedroom was used during our stay in May 2011.  There were sustained periods of rain during that time, with absolutely no indication of leakage from the roof of any sort.

The review stated that they were forced to keep their clothing in their suitcases, as there was nowhere to put their clothes. There's a huge armoire in each of the downstairs bedrooms, plenty of room to store clothing there.

The hot tub is serviced regularly, I've seen someone come and do that during every stay there.   It's kept in a pristine state, with clear water.  So I can definitively say it was in good and inviting condition in May 2011, I spent as much time as possible sitting in it.

There is no overbearing unpleasant odor in the kitchen or anywhere else in the cottage.

The owner continues to upgrade both the interior of the cottage and the garden on an ongoing basis.  Every year we find something new has been done to improve on what is already a delightful property.

Cottage Mary Rose is charming.  It's in a peaceful location in the country, with anything visitors might need available in the nearby town of Castleisland, only a couple of miles away.  It's ideally located for day trips through a large portion of western Ireland.  Everything needed  is there for cozy stay-at-home days as well.

Again, my family stayed in this cottage just a week before Silvermama, we were highly satisfied with the condition of the cottage, as always.   I'd hate to see anyone choose to forego s
