Imagine a warm summer evening. You're relaxing in an Adirondack chair on a large lawn that leads away to the beautiful shoreline of Lake Michigan. You gaze at the moon now rising over the lake, its shimmering light illuminating the water. You hear the gentle sounds of the waves lapping at the rocky shore. There's a rousing card game going on in the sunroom just behind you. You watch with delight as your children laugh and frolic around you, chasing lightening bugs around the cedar trees surrounding the lawn. You realize that you haven't enjoyed this degree of relaxation in many years.
That's what summer is like at this lovely place known as Bagatelle. Set amongst over 7 acres of cedar and hardwood forest, this French-inspired 'little villa', designed and built by a renowned Chicago-area architect in 1972, can provide a quiet, peaceful escape from the challenges of everyday life.
From the moment you approach the front of the house from the long, curving driveway, you realize that you are about to enjoy a very unique experience. The 300 feet of private shoreline affords you the chance to walk along the rocky beach, or wade out almost forever into the surprisingly warm waters of Lake Michigan, or start a roaring campfire in the rock fire pit at the water's edge, or simply drink in the near-panoramic views of the lake and Door County peninsula to the north.
You'll find Bagatelle itself to be warmly inviting and comfortable. The spacious, richly wood-paneled living room will be the central gathering space for your visit here with family and friends. Plenty of places to sit quietly with a book, or to visit and play together, listen to music from the CD/iPod compatible stereo system, or to watch a movie or TV show on the large flat screen set. Walk just a few paces to the all-glass sunroom. Throw open the sliding doors and it seems that the lake is within arm's reach.
Bagatelle's first floor bedrooms are comfortable, airy and supplied with a generous amount of closet space. Each bedroom is furnished with a queen bed and the first floor bathroom, featuring a tub/shower combination, is steps away. Upstairs, you'll find a full private bath to serve the 2 bedrooms, each outfitted with 2 twin beds. The kitchen features a huge picture window that allows unobstructed views to the lakeshore.
An adjacent mud room provides a convenient spot to park your extra vacationing gear. The sunroom, built on the lakeside of the house, is furnished with an expandable dining table where your family can enjoy the daily feast.
While Bagatelle's wooded setting is secluded, quiet and very peaceful you'll have plenty of opportunity to enjoy some of Door County's finest experiences. A walk down the driveway leads you to a number of quiet country roads perfect for long walks, jogging or biking. The Liberty Grove public boat launch is just minutes away, allowing you to launch your boat in North Bay.
A 10-minute drive takes you to charming downtown Sister Bay with its collection of restaurants, shops and marina. Driving either north or south along scenic Highway 42 will take you to the delights of Ellison Bay, Washington Island, Ephraim, Fish Creek and Egg Harbor. Summertime offers the further delights of watching live theatre at the beautiful home of the Peninsula Players.
Bagatelle is fully furnished except for sheets and towels (available by arrangement).
