Casita del Lago (Little House on the Lake) is a secluded lakefront vacation home with lakefront access sitting on a river embankment right where the Chama River meets the 12 mile long Abiquiu Lake. This stunning thick-walled adobe style casita sits on 23 acres of natural surroundings and is crafted to true New Mexican style. It is well positioned on a gradually sloping hillside for privacy and it's close proximity to the sky blue water and 250 million year old layered Red Rock cliffs provide for spectacular one-of-a-kind views and pictures---right from your home.
We mean it when we say that The Casita del Lago on Abiquiu Lake is located on one of the most beautiful spots in the world. Step into a Georgia O'Keeffe painting right from your doorstep! This modern adobe style vacation home is like no other in design and amenities. Imported granite countertops, custom handmade Spanish Pueblo arched doors, imported Mexican furniture, resort quality bedding and linens, authentic southwest lit nichos, handmade Kiva Lighting sconces, plastered interior walls, radiant floor heat, air conditioning unit, washer/dryer, high speed WIFI, top rated appliances, indigenous rock woodburning fireplace, and 4 furnished outdoor living spaces!! The east and west portales are attached with heated floors and one-of-a-kind views. The southern portal (porch) just off the kitchen offers warm, sunlit days in even the coolest high desert New Mexico temps. And the hot tub will be an experience unique to each guest!
Although you can stay inside the 1158 sq. ft. glass walled paradise and never plug-in any entertainment device, this deluxe casita is designed to include them. A large LCD HD TV is positioned above the wood burning rock fireplace and speakers for MP3 and Ipod players are included. If you want to move your entertainment outdoors to the heated floor portales where there are as many outdoor living spaces as indoor living spaces, then hook up to the fastest wireless internet in the area or position yourself to watch the flatscreen TV, or do what I do, take an afternoon siesta.
The 6 person hot tub is nestled among huge rock boulders just off the western portal and it reserves it own spectacular views for itself, especially at night when the billions and billions of stars come out. For the more adventuresome, a short hike to the 'Stonehenge firepit' at sunset for a spectacular outdoor viewing and nighttime fire atop the arroyo is a perfect setting for your favorite ghost story--or fairy tale story for the little ones.
Extra care was taken to craft your casita to be more than sleeping quarters with a kitchen.
It is a work of art in itself, erected without one tree being uprooted. And while the window space was maximized--Casita del Lago remains very energy efficient and green. Often, indigenous materials were utilized by local craftsmen. For you who have not visited New Mexico before, you will immediately notice the absence of noise, air, and light pollutants. We absolutely love it here and we hope you will, too. You can check in with us for more information about the area and its rich history.
For those of you familiar with the area, Casita del Lago is spectacularly unique. The drive down towards the water with the incredible Sedona-like views is worth the trip in itself! This is the area's most private and secluded resort setting; you will be amazed at the views that surround you and you will want to wake up early just to witness the break of dawn. Then settle in for an afternoon siesta on one of the outdoor daybeds; or curl up to a book; go down to the water; start a gourmet meal; sightsee (if you must); horseback ride; photograph; hike the arroyos on your property; draw, paint, write, dream, and much, much, more.

We fell in love with Abiquiu Lake and the surrounding area during a trip here several years ago. We balance raising our family, managing our careers and trying to spend as much time in Abiquiu as we can. We are pretty much regular folk who fell in love with Abiquiu and wanted to create something very special. We love it here as do our 3 teenage kids, riding horses on the property with Hollywood stuntman Fred. Our goal is to spend as much time here as time allows. When we can't be here, we rent out our home so others can enjoy the experience.
Tom Calfee purchased this house in 2009
Quite simply, this place found us and the timing could not have been better. There are only four Lakefront parcels in the area, and only one remains available for sale (and that is the property we own adjacent to Casita del Lago.) When you visit here, and you view many of the scapes Georgia O'Keeffe painted in their original context, you will understand why she could never leave.
360 degree panoramic views of paradise. Signature Casita on the shores of Abiquiu Lake - it is a house and property like no other and the only Lakefront vacation rental with lake access to Abiquiu Lake. Casita del Lago is built in traditional adobe style with 14' thick walls. The New Mexican charm is enhanced by the fully arched architectural doorways and the pair of built in lighted nichos opposite the woodburning fireplace. But it incorporates todays most modern conveniences. It is very private but also very conspicuous to boaters as it sits high on the hill overlooking the river. You can be as private as you would like to be, because you have 23 acres to roam. Bring your camera to photograph the vistas, relax in the two outdoor daybeds, take in the stars at the incredibly luxurious hot tub, light a fire indoors, or on the western portale, or venture out to the western outdoor pit. Admire the sunrise, or heat up the Eastern Portale and enjoy it from the bench. Walk down to the water for solitude or to drop a line in. Or just curl up on the 5' circular oversized chaise on the south portal and warm up to the afternoon sun. And those are just a few of the daily options you have at Casita del Lago.
Most grateful that this place, this magical place, whose us. This place -under the meteors, the white fluffy clouds, among the red orange purple cliffs and equally brilliant sunset - we begin our new life together.
The good: the casita is absolutely lovely- it's a beautiful home right on the edge of the lake, with gorgeous decor. Heat comes from radiant heating in the floor, granite countertops, beautiful real wooden doors, and great hiking nearby. The beds were comfortable and had plenty of pillows. The kitchen was adequately stocked for cooking. The hot tub is lovely and has an incredible view of the lake. For 1-4 people this place would be an incredible getaway.
The bad: There is not sleeping for 7. There are two bedrooms - one has a queen and a bunk bed with 2 beds, and the other has a single king-size bed. The rest of the house is just the living/dining area and the kitchen, which is really one wide-open space. This means one or two people get to share a room with the kids, and one unlucky person gets to sleep on lawn furniture that you'll have to drag into the living room through a patio doorway that is just barely wide enough if you turn it just right and move the dining room table out of the way. The patio furniture ended up being so uncomfortable that our son ended up sleeping on the couch instead, and it's really not a good couch for sleeping; it's not a pull-out or anything.
You have to bring your own water in - the tap is well water and it's extremely salty. It's fine for showering/cooking but you won't want to drink it.
You'll also need a fairly rugged vehicle for the road in. It's a smooth dirt road but gets pretty steep right by the driveway. In any kind of inclement weather you're really going to want a 4WD or you might not get out.
The fireplace will smoke up the house in a hurry. If you read the extensive instructions in the binder left by the owner, you'll know to open the small door next to the front door to provide ventilation. If you don't read that until you've already noticed the house getting smoky, it's kind of too late.
The kitchen has very little counter space. Cooking for 7 was uncomfortable and required a lot of juggling, impromptu use of chairs to set things, constant washing of dishes, etc.
If you have a rugged vehicle and a group of 1-4 people, this place would be fantastic.
We stayed at the casita del lago on our last trip to Abiquiu. We did a lot - shopping in Santa Fe, Ghostranch, Echo Amphitheater, Plaza Blanca. Tried to get to the Monastery but the roads were too bad. The Casita is a great place to stay if you want to explore, or if you want to hang at home and read, relax. If you paint, this is your place. We loved the Mexican furniture, loved the kitchen, and wow - the views. Hot tub at night was a great way to end the day. Clear skies. Just a great trip and a great place to stay. Left feeling totally relaxed. One tip - if there is any rain or snow you shouldn't try to visit the Monastery of Christ in the Desert...roads are too difficult. The owners, Carolyn and Tom, were incredibly responsive and helpful. They made this whole process so easy. And they have done a fabulous job with the Casita - from the design, the views, the furniture, every detail. They aren't the cheapest vacation rental, but they are worth every extra penny. Pay up and stay on the lake - don't miss it....there is a reason why they charge more than some of the other places that are not on Abiquiu Lake.
Four of us spent a week in January at this wonderful spot. The views of the lake were incredible and the sunsets were spectacular! We really loved the house - roomy and comfortable. We had four warm, sunny days before we got some snow. The road into the casita is about 4 miles of dirt road, but we didn't have any trouble getting in and out. We did days trips all over the area, but always had the casita as "home base". We got great information prior to arriving from the owner. I would go back in a heartbeat. I loved the house, I loved the area. Just go!!
I would make one comment about the trash service...we put the trash out on Wednesday, following the instructions set out. I don't know if they changed the pick up site, but trash service did not pick up the trash and the next day, it was tossed on the side of the road on 199. My husband and I picked it up and took it into town. The instructions seemed pretty clear to me, so I'm not sure if the pickup site has changed, but wanted to make the owner aware.
My husband and I stayed at this amazing home over Christmas. This stay ranks as one of our most favorite ever. This home is super cozy with warm colors, ambient heated floors, crackling fire place and incredible views of Abiquiu Lake and mountains. Viewing the star-filled night sky while soaking in the hot tub made for a most perfect Christmas Eve. Our Christmas stay was complete waking up to a snow covered NM landscape. Absolutely beautiful!! We hope to return in the future and recommend it highly to anyone looking to get away. If you have children, the guest bedroom has plenty of space with a bunk bed and an additional queen (I believe) as well as a full guest bathroom.
We four friends enjoyed a relaxing weekend in this beautiful home! Very well-equipped kitchen, comfortable beds, roomy hot tub. All of those amenities help to enhance the pleasure of the gorgeous views. The owners did a great job of providing detailed information by email before our arrival as well as having an extensive reference book for guests. Highly recommend.
The casita is as pictured and the views are spectacular. Stayed several nights and would like to return some day. Enjoyed the quiet surroundings with views in all directions. Also, Carol was very responsive with any questions before and during our stay. Had a wonderful time exploring the area and just simply relaxing at the casita. No complaints, wonderful home, beautiful views...highly recommend this vacation property.
