3 Generation Spring Break

  • 5 of 5

Our family has travelled fairly extensively with this being our 3rd home rental in the last few years (Orlando, Maui being the others) - so we have some basis for comparison. We have been to San Diego a few times in recent years and were looking this year to do a stay with our parents and teenage daughter in La Jolla. I saw this house last fall and thought it to be the perfect fit, but it was booked for the week we wanted. Imagine my surprise when one cold January day in Canada, we found that it was now available for our March dates.... There are many nice-appearing places in La Jolla, but nothing that seemed as perfect as this one, so we jumped on it when it came open. Very glad we did.

All the good stuff has already been said... Location, location, location. Perfect for the beach, for access to down-town La Jolla, and for a quick trip to SD. The front deck and back courtyard give you all the options you need. Glass of wine or brew on the deck for sunset. Coffee in the courtyard in the a.m. when it is a little cooler in front of the house.

I always find it helpful to read the worse reviews also, to get a different sense of what you are stepping into. I suppose that if a high-end hotel is your point of reference, you will find issues. There might be a little dust on a fixture in the corner somewhere, or a piece of caulking that needs replacing in a shower, or you might not get a matched set of wine glasses, but for us this stuff is trivial. Everything you need is there. It is such a dream to have a cold drink over the fire on the front deck, enjoying the view of the palm trees, the surfers and the waves breaking. I truly had that feeling you hope to get on vacation (but seldom do), where you can forget about the other stuff in your life and just enjoy a perfect moment in a perfect day. We had a couple of these moments.

Regarding the property management, I didn't get to meet Brant, but we traded emails as necessary, and there was never a problem. He was very attentive and responsive. For newbees, I strongly encourage you to contact the property manager if you have any problems. We fretted over stuff on one of our other rentals (in Maui) for a few days, then called. In that case, the stuff was fixed in an hour once we called. Brant was equally keen to make the experience here positive whenever something came up.

We'll be back!

Winter Getaway

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I "discovered" this gem 5 years ago. We started out staying one month (January), that soon grew to 2 month, and now we are scheduled to enjoy the entire winter next year. The house is perfectly located a few feet away, for a beach walk, or a stroll through Kellogg Park. Just 3 blocks from downtown La Jolla Shores that has 6 restaurants and numerous specialty shops. La Jolla Village is a 3 minute drive up the hill (and we enjoy walking that sometimes as well).

The house is perfect for us when the children and grandchildren arrive for week long stays when we use all four bedrooms. They love the hot tub and back porch for playing. We all wait for the gorgeous California sunsets viewed perfectly from the front porch. Kids attractions, The Zoo, Lego Land, The Aquarium are close by and great fun for everyone.

The kitchen is nicely stocked with dishes, glass, silverware and all the necessary things you need if you want to cook .

The property is expertly managed by Brant and Moriah, who live a few blocks away. Nothing is to small for them to help, and assist to make sure everything goes perfectly. The respond promptly to every need.

Its our unofficial winter home. I'm sure you will enjoy it the other months as much as we do.

Guys Golf Trip

  • 5 of 5

Outstanding home with unbelievable views and accommodations. Had more than enough room for 5 golfers, huge kitchen (even cooked at home 2x which we normally never do) plenty of comfy chairs/sofas after a day of golf. Best part of home for us however was front porch (which contained a gas fire pit) overlooking all the beach activity, Pacific ocean and west coast sunsets. Outstanding - all 5 of us would love to go back to this place.

Happy...again!

  • 5 of 5

This was our second stay in this house and it did not disappoint. The location is steps away from the beach, and local restaurants are within walking distance (two delicious Italian eateries and a French bistro among them). A wonderful children's playground is walking distance. The front porch has cozy, oversized chairs and a fire pit. We spent hours every night drinking wine, making s'mores, listening to the waves and watching late night beach activity. The outdoor hot tub offers a nice place to relax after a tiring day at the beach. The beds are comfortable; my only minor complaint is that the master bedroom bed is very high off the ground. The layout of the house is very nice, sort of a U shape around an inner courtyard. There are a few stairs leading from the den into the bedroom hallway, so make a note of that if accessibility is an issue. Also, there are stairs leading up from the garage into the house, and from the front yard to the front door. The garage is well stocked with towels, beach toys, chairs and umbrellas. There is so much to do within walking distance of the house that, during our past two stays, we literally parked our car in the garage and let it sit there for a week! If you're really brave and in good shape, the Birch Aquarium is also a fairly short, uphill hike away. This house has provided us with two weeks of AMAZING family memories, and hopefully more to come!

The Perfect Location!

  • 5 of 5

This was the fifth time my husband and I have had the pleasure of staying in this wonderful home. We have rented other houses in the general area, but have been spoiled and are always drawn back to this one. We have always been extremely happy with the condition and cleanliness of the house. It is v ery well stocked in every aspect and also has everything you could want for a fun day at the beach from beach towels to umbrellas to any kind of beach toy your children could want. You cannot beat the location - steps from Kellogg Park and The Shores! We love sitting out on the front porch sipping coffee in the morning, or lighting a fire in the fire pit in the evening, sipping wine and watching all of the activity going on across the street. There are several restaurants within walking distance so you can literally park your car in the garage and not drive it again until your departure date. Having said that, if you like to cook, the kitchen is extremely well stocked with everything you need to create a meal at home. If we have ever had an issue during our stay, Brant and his wife are always on top of it. We were staying here in 2011 and experienced the huge power outage that affected Arizona and Southern California for over 12 hours. We found ourselves locked out of the house, as we did not take a house key to the beach with us and were going in and out using the keypad at the garage. Because we had no power, we were unable to use the garage door to get back into the house. We called Brant and he came to our rescue immediately to let us in. It is apparent that Brant and Moriah take very seriously the responsibility of making sure their guests are happy and taken care of during their stay - what more could you ask for?! We have created so many wonderful memories with family and friends in this house and look forward to continuing the tradition. This, honestly, is one of our favorite vacation destinations ~ we think it will be yours, too!

Filthy Upon Arrival - Great Home; Very Disappointing Experience

  • 3 of 5

When we arrived, we were delighted at the home itself. But just in the first 10 minutes, after our babies walked and crawled around the living room and porch, their hands and feet were BLACK. I don't expect a sterile environment, but NO way should things have been this filthy from Day 1.

Just a short list of issues were: half-eaten crackers on the floor on the front porch, mold under the bath mat in the guest bathroom tub (which i was about to give my babies a bath in), a layer of grime on the living room coffee table, a layer of grime on top of the coffee maker, old food stuck to the table in the courtyard, old messy bird crap on the courtyard floor, filthy lounge chairs in the backyard, cobwebs in the corner of the master bedroom, and their infant high chair provided was coated with old baby food and dirt.

Moriah (the owners’ daughter) offered to send the cleaners back to fix what was wrong, which was great. I showed them a few things to get started, and they did as little as they could before literally sneaking out. As a bonus, they left a filthy, toxic-cleanser-soaked rag on the front porch within reach of my babies. I left Moriah a message about the whole fiasco, and she simply texted me saying "The cleaners said they did what you asked."

I was in tears, and after my husband got me to calm down, we just decided to go buy supplies and clean the place. Yes, after paying $6K for the week we scrubbed the floors ourselves.

It's all really too bad because we did like the house itself. It was a lovely home with a cute yard, and wonderfully stocked with everything you could need for the beach, and the kitchen was fantastically stocked as well. And the location was just amazing! We were testing this out to be a longer-term rental for many summers to come. But we won’t be coming back.

While we were there the fridge suddenly stopped working and much of our food went bad, including the milk for our babies. They DID have the fridge fixed within 24 hours, which was wonderful. That pleasantly surprised us based on how little they seemed to care about the cleanliness.

FYI - Brant did refund our cleaning fee after I sent a detailed email with photos, but without even an acknowledgment of the issues or an apology that it happened and that it wouldn't happen again if we wanted to come back. The end.

Owner's Response: Wow... where do I start? I was going to have VRBO remove this review due to fraud and extortion by this guest but instead I decided to leave a response, something that I should not have to do. In first response, please read the other reviews. I sold this home to my clients/friends 5 years ago and they completely remodeled it and it is kept extremely clean. One of our regular housekeepers was unable to clean the home so she sent a friend to take care of it and yes she did miss a few things. Once we were made aware of the items we sent our regular housekeepers the next day to do a touch up. As per this renters review she made a list and once the housekeepers finished they left. The woman came out and yelled at them for leaving the home without telling her. She was also completely rude and demeaning to them and Moriah. Completely unacceptable! This guest texted over 20 times during her stay with ridiculous questions. In regards to some of the items listed in her review: Yes, when you walk outside your feet will get dirty. It wasn't from the floors in the home but the front deck and the back deck. The decks are swept between every guest but being at the beach they will get dusty quick. There was one tiny cracker behind a chair that was missed. One bird dropping on the patio... Are you kidding me...? There are seagulls everywhere as well as other birds and believe it or not they do fly over the home. The owners don't have an invisible shield that protects the home from falling objects. This guest sent a "debrief" after her departure. Who does that...? I didn't respond to her because she was rude. The owners are close friends of mine and own other vacation rentals in the Shores. They want me to let them know when we have a problem renter. Before this guest departed and wrote her review they instructed me not to rent to her again. My family and I live in the Shores just a couple of blocks from this home and own a vacation rental too. We have been lucky over the years to meet great people from all over the world who are happy to be able to rent such nice homes in one of the most beautiful places in the country. Unfortunately, once in a while we encounter some people who just aren't happy in life. Thankfully, it's a very small percentage of guests.
