Photos and Description of the Kalapana vacation house rental
House, 1 Bedroom + Sunroom, 1 Bath, (Sleeps 5)

Gorgeous and Well-Appointed Bali Temple offers 160 degree Ocean Views and a wonderfully relaxing and peaceful Hawaii experience that will leave you fully rejuvenated.

Bali Temple is truly a unique and special place to land in Hawaii, and is known for its dramatic setting, beautiful architecture and luxuriously well-appointed amenities.

Bali Temple is located right on the 1993 lava flow which has created 160 degree expansive Pacific Ocean whitewater views for your enjoyment. There is a private black sand beach a few hundred yards away to enjoy year round sunrises and sunsets and watch the humpback whales breaching during the winter months.

Bali Temple was completely remodeled in 2007 and enjoys a fully equipped modern kitchen, double vanity sinks, 6’ spa bathtub, granite, gorgeous Mahogany wood trim accents, expansive picture windows looking out to the ocean, large mirrors, a covered lanai, Tempur-Pedic mattresses, 100% cotton bedding, and thick bath towels.

There are many spectacular sites to visit during your stay: visit Kehena Beach, a gorgeous black sand beach where you may be lucky to swim and snorkel with wild spinner dolphins, and your (non) clothing is optional. Snorkel in the tide pools of Kapoho. Check out the numerous Volcano Touring activities such as: Volcano National Park, Lava Tree State Park, Lava Boat Tours, Lava Hikes, and the Geothermal Heated Hot Ponds. Experience an abundance of shopping for the true tastes of Hawaii with its abundant selections of fresh fruits, vegetables, fish, flowers, and unique gift items at either Maku'u Market in Pahoa (Saturday), S.P.A.C.E. Market in Seaview (Saturday morning), the Kaimu Market (Wednesday night, and ½ mile away from Bali Temple!) complete with Hawaiian music, and the Hilo Farmer's Market (Wednesday and Saturday). Acquaint yourself with the Island flora with a tour at the Botanical Gardens, sightsee and explore numerous waterfalls, Whale Watch from the lanai, indulge yourself with fine Dining, and dance it all off at Ecstatic Dance on Sundays at Kalani, and then the Drum Circle on Sunday afternoon at Kehena Beach. There are numerous Yoga Classes, Pilates Classes, and massage therapists ready to treat you!

Dining options from Bali Temple are numerous: Right in the neighborhood is an authentic Ava Bar, serving up the local and relaxing Kava beverage, with the Kalapana Village Café is right next door, open til 9pm. Kalani Honua is 4 miles down the Red Road for delicious meals too. 8 miles up the road is Pahoa Town, with numerous options in Italian, Thai, Sushi, Mexican, Kaleo’s Bar and Grill, coffee shops, etc. Hilo is 30 miles for many more choices.

When my visitors depart Bali Temple, they feel refreshed, invigorated, and much more vibrant then when they arrived. The air along our coastline has been measured to be the cleanest in the United States! The lush greenery and scenic coastline areas are inspiring.

I look forward to your visit at Bali Temple…see you soon!

About The Owner

I fell in love with Kalapana/Kehena 20 minutes after my arrival! I have been all over the state, and have found no other place to be so close to the ways of old Hawaiian Living… the people of this community are happy and friendly and the way of life is still relaxed and laid back. There is as much of a social life in the Lower Puna area as any big city!

I fell in love with this property in ’06 and purchased it with the idea of creating a sanctuary to grow old in. Prior to my ownership, this property was a part of a Buddist’s Meditation Center and it was direct oceanfront. In the 1990 lava flow, the property was preserved as the lava swept along the shoreline, taking out the beaches and forming new ones. This newly created land now belongs to the state. There is approximately 200’ of lava between Bali Temple and the Pacific Ocean!

I saw myself growing old on this property, so I renovated it for 2 years in the style I wished to live, and it shows!

Living on an active volcano on the 2nd largest mountain on the planet (next to Mauna Kea, the other volcano of Big Island) has its benefits…there is a magnetic energy here that many feel to be “Supercharged”, lending itself to the dynamic and creative spirits of our community members.

The Owner purchased this house in 2006
Why The Owner chose Kalapana

This is the best weather on the island, according to the Hawaiians. More Hawaiians lived here then in any other location!

Balmy nights, 45" of rain each year, and sunshine filled days. No air conditioning or heating is needed; just a well ventilated house such as Bali Temple.

What makes this house unique

A natural setting as dramatic as that which Bali Temple enjoys is rare. The energy of the active volcano, whose lava flows just 10 or so miles away, is truly invigorating.

Walks along the coastal bluffs directly in front of Bali Temple give you the experience of what Hawaii was like long ago...unihabited, wild, and sensual, with the "Techni-Colors" of Hawaii's vivid ocean and sky blues, white puffy clouds, bright greens of the vegetation, and the sound of the crashing waves you hear all day and all night.

At night, you will be in awe at the number and brightness of the star-lite skies!

Amazing Property

We stayed at Bali Temple for a week over my birthday. The house sits on this vast lava field, it's really just impossible to describe how beautiful it is. The sunset, the sunrise, the peace and quiet. We did yoga at a local retreat, took a boat ride to view lava as it flowed into the ocean and shopped at various farmers markets where we bought fresh cheap local produce. The kitchen was well appointed and we cooked almost every night. The town of Pahoa is close enough to go for dinner as in the little cafe at the end of the road. If you are looking to get away from it all, this is your destination.

A Hidden Gem

We were looking for a quiet, "out of the way" place to celebrate our 10th wedding anniversary. Bali Temple was perfect! This place is a hidden gem, tucked away in the jungle, with a nice view of the ocean. Experience the more peaceful side of Hawaii as you fall asleep to the sounds of tropical coqui frogs and ocean waves washing up against the shoreline. Bali temple is amazingly appointed with top of the line furnishings and attention to detail. The property was very clean and pleasant when we arrived and the owner was very quick to respond to any questions and/or needs during our stay. Our stay/experience at this property was excellent in all regards. Thank You!

Peaceful Quiet and Tranquil

What an amazing property? Pictures do not do justice. The Bali Temple was everything advertised and more. We could see the lava flow from the lanai. We were only there 3 nights but had a chance to do everything we came to do. Snorkeling at the tide pools was our favorite adventure. It was off the beaten path through a neighborhood but was worth it. We got to go to the market in Hilo and that was fun. Took in the two larger waterfalls also. We then drove north around the island and experience 4 or 5 different weather systems on our way to the Kona airport. Moholo to Rachaelle for letting us share her overly spacious place. We would definitely recommend. One last tid bit of info, make arrangements to get to Bali before dark if this is your first stay, it's kind of hard to find but the directions led us right to it. Thanks again!

Excellent Cultural, Spiritual and Relaxing Experience

The house (upper level) was immaculately beautiful, spacious, very private and exactly as described on the website. Rachaelle was very helpful. Everything we needed was at our disposal including beach chairs and towels, coolers and laundry machines and even some condiments. So check the fridge and cupboards before buying groceries. It will save you a few $$. Don’t forget to give your phone # at the grocery store, you’ll save even more. Having the high end appliances and the beautiful view from the lanai was nothing but inviting to enjoy our meals while watching the sunrise or sunset and listen to the ocean hitting against the lava walls. It is a 30-45 minute walk to the lava flowing viewing site but we preferred the very short drive at night that’s when it is best to see it.

Awesome!

The place is so niiiice and clean. It is a beautiful home with terrific furnishings and a great view and all the conveniences of home. You can leave the sliders open and listen to the ocean and the frogs lull you to sleep. I would definitely recommend this property to everyone.

We visited in early December 2011 and found ourselves in Hilo area quite a bit. We love the tropical side better than the Kona side. We did the Waipio valley horseback riding (great!), and visited the volcano park ($10 for a week long pass), tide pools located nearby the champagne pool were the best. The champagne pond itself was okay too. The zoo was really cool (they have a tiger=love), and just driving around sightseeing was amazing. We ate mostly at the house but we did dine in Hilo at Cafe 100 (good for breakfast or lunch), Hilo Bay Cafe (delish) and Big Island Pizza (pesto pizza was fantastic). The Hilo farmers market is big on the weekend...but you really can go there any day for a scaled down version. We also went to the end of the road in Kalapana and enjoyed the live music. The singer (a trio) was super and his voice was so smooth. There is a little convenience store right there too, otherwise you have to go to Pahoa which is a quick drive...but when you're already tired of driving that huge island it is nice to have something close by. They have a little bit of everything it seems!

All in all - Rachaelle was great and her home is just lovely. The area was great and you won't be disappointed.
