The Lorelei Cabins are located in Dubuque, Iowa, near Swiss Valley Park. The beautifully decorated cabins, The Edelweiss and The Aster, and our newest property, The Homestead, are perfect for any getaway. The cabins and the house are secluded in an area with over 400 acres of land, yet close enough to the city of Dubuque to enjoy the restaurants, shopping, and other amenities a city has to offer.
A perfect place for a family gathering, reunion, wedding or a romantic getaway. Each season has it's own unique offerings, with the vibrant leaves in the fall, the snow activities in the winter, and the relaxing tranquility of the ponds and Catfish Creek in the spring and summer.
The sunsets are abundant, and the lights of the city are a beautiful back drop to this area. Viewing the wild life and various scenes of nature are an experience everyone can appreciate. Walking in the woods, having a picnic or bird watching, is also recommended.

Laura is originally from Dubuque, Iowa, and Jim is originally from Milwaukee. They have been married 28 years and have three grown 'children'. Both have human service back grounds. Jim is a motivational speaker/educator and owns Creative Education Services as well as Lorelei Cabins with Laura. The best part of owning the cabins has been the great people they get to meet all of the time, and the events in people's lives they are able to share.
Laura purchased this cabin in 2009
This property has been family owned since 1930. The Edelweiss Cabin and the Aster Cabin were built in 2009 and 2010. The idea was to offer beautiful upscale cabins, on this property so others can enjoy the area and all of the natural beauty has to offer. There are over 400 acres to hike, snow shoe, bird watch, picnic or even fish. Enjoy the water with our paddle boat and canoe. My home is a hillside away from the cabin, so we are available to take care of any problems or to help your stay be complete. This cabin, the Edelweiss and the Aster Cabin are a perfect pairing for family reunions or other events.
WE offer hot tubs all year round, and beautiful scenery all seasons. Our kitchens are fully equipped so you never have to leave to go out to eat unless you want to. We are honoring my mother, Sally von Carlowitz with this endeavor, as it wouldn't have happened unless she convinced us to follow through in providing this magical experience. We all loved the Sound of Music, which is why the cabins are named as they are, and Lorelei is named after myself, Laura, and my sister, Lisa. Unfortunately, my mother passed away suddenly in 2010 before the second cabin was finished. I believe she is watching over us and happy with how everything turned out and really happy at how busy all of this has been keeping me!
OMG-you must see to believe!! If you think the pictures are beautiful, then you must take the time & book your reservation so you can enjoy this MUST see, breath taking experience. You will never see this amount of "God's creation" all in one place. From acres & I mean acres of green grass, trees (mercy, oh mercy, the sizes of these you must see) animals & much more that you will never find any where else but here. I challenge you to try. I have been to South Dakota, Florida, Hawaii, Las Vegas, Illinois, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Missouri, Georgia, Ohio,Tennessee, Nebraska,Texas & Trinidad. All nice places but nothing close to the beauty & relaxation you will find here at the cabins.
My brother Craig chose a cabin to celebrate his 30th wedding anniversary with his wife Lisa & daughter's Sara 21st birthday. Our family has grown, so from the oldest being my parents of 80 & 81 to the youngest of 6 weeks & too many to count of relatives in between. He wanted it to be special & therefore looked for a place where everyone of all ages would enjoy & remember their special occasions. Jim, Laura & son Michael were awesome in welcoming every single one of us. The place is "spic and span clean." All you need to do is bring your own food & drink, everything else you can imagine is there. You literally would not have to leave once you arrive here. Isn't that what makes get away's hectic, stressful & tiresome, just when you want to sit back & relax someone decides it's time to start running. Not here, in fact if you do leave you are missing time away from this awesome place to relax & enjoy.
Thank you to my brother Craig for organizing an awesome day for our entire family to enjoy together. Laura, Jim & Michael thank you also for being so genuine in welcoming all of us!! I can not wait until Fall to hopefully organize a get together with some of my closer friends. How beautiful the trees will be changing colors. Then there is our cold Iowa winters, what an awesome time to relax around the fire place after ice skating. Good child hood memories coming back already & winter isn't even here yet!
Looking forward to seeing you soon,
Lisa-life long resident of Dubuque Iowa
We spent the weekend in the Edelweiss Cabin with my parents. This was their first stay and my third. For the first time, we were able to walk into a rental propery that didn't make my mother want to start cleaning! Spotless!!!!! My parents immediately fell in love with the property, just as I had. Laura and Jim are fantastic people and are VERY accommodating. We were able to meet two of their children, and they were just as charming. This property and the owners have quickly become the go-to place for a get away for my husband and me. We will continue to stay there for years to come and cannot say enough about how peaceful, beautiful and fun it is to stay. Both nights that we were there, we were able to watch deer across the pond, raccoons, and a gorgeous night sky. Thanks again for another great stay!!!!
Home for the Holidays…..well….almost!
My family and I rented the Aster Cabin over the Christmas Holiday and it worked out beautifully!
We traveled from London, St. Paul, Minnesota and Bloomington, Indiana to be together and the accommodations at the Aster were great!
From the moment we stepped into the cabin and were treated to a fabulous loaf of cinnamon bread and homemade jam to the subsequent treats of hot cocoa mix and marshmallows, Laura and Jim made sure we were comfortable and cozy in the Iowa winter cold! A decorated live Christmas tree was an added touch to our stay!
Jim made certain the lane was plowed making frequent visits to family and friends trouble free!
The snow covered trails were a delight to hike in the early morning stillness with a magnificent sky to light the way. The hot tub was most relaxing after busy days and evenings!
Thank you Laura and Jim for making our Holiday one to remember!
We have been to Dubuque before but wanted to try something different this time. We travel there to ski at Sundown - and the cabin was about a 20-25 min drive from there (perfect in our minds!). You are close enough to Dubuque to enjoy what they have to offer (which is A LOT) but you feel totally secluded. The cabin was perfectly clean but MUCH larger than we expected. It is easily big enough for a family of 4 plus more. We loved the feeling of being out in nature - the pond was frozen but beautiful and the grounds were amazing. We hiked with snowshoes (provided!) and the roads were all well plowed and safe. We cannot wait to come back and try the cabin/s in a different season! Thanks Jim and Laura - it was a perfect family vacation!
we spent four nights in farm house adjacent to Lorelei cabins and could not have been more pleased. The house was comfortable, the location convenent to Dubuque, the great river road and other activities, and the farm itself offered abundant opportunities for walking, fishing, etc. The owners were also most helpful and pleasant.
My husband and I stayed in the Edelweiss cabin with my brother and sister in-law. We had a great time. The cabin is clean and well stocked with everything you need. The cabin has such a peaceful feel and the view out the back is beautiful. We arrived Thursday evening and didn't leave the cabin to go anywhere until Saturday afternoon...it was that enjoyable to just hang out at the cabin. We did take the golf cart for a ride and that was a lot of fun. My husband and his brother fished both ponds and did actually catch some fish. We took a spin on the peddle boat. We built a fire all three evenings and that definitely made it worth renting the cabin. The stars at night were breathtaking! If you are planning on doing a lot of cooking, the kitchen in the Edelweiss is a bit small. We still managed to make some wonderful breakfasts and did our other meals on the grill. The Astor cabin has a bigger kitchen but I do prefer the gorgeous view from the Edelweiss. The owners are very friendly and accommodating. I called and left a message that we would need some more wood for the evening fire and within a half hour we saw Jim piling up more wood by the fire pit. We talked on a few different occasions with Jim and Laura and they seem to be helpful and genuinely hopeful that you are enjoying your stay at the cabin. The ride into the city is quick and the Galena area isn't too much further so I would say the location is perfect. This was the second stay for my husband and I as just the two of us stayed in April. That visit was also enjoyable. We saw a lot more wild life (deer, turkey, ducks) on that stay and that was really awesome. The weather in April was cold but that made the hot tub that much more indulging. We also cozied up by the fireplace on that stay. I would highly recommend staying here...ANYTIME of the year.
On site, with over 400 acres to hike, snowshoe, fish in the Catfish Creek and in the newly built ponds. Many beautiful places and overlooks to enjoy picnics and sunsets. Wildlife is abundant, including deer, turkeys, eagles and red tailed hawks. Close to Sundown Mountain for winter skiing, cross country skiing is available on site, or at The Swiss Valley Park. Snow shoeing is available with snow shoes available. Only 8 minutes to the city of Dubuque. Many great places to visit in Dubuque: casino, hockey, theatre, ballet, ice skating, the Mississippi River Museum, river walk, shopping, wineries and much more. The 4th St. elevator is a great experience in the spring, summer and fall. There are many great restaurants such as L'May, and Woodfire. Close to Galena, Illinois., which offers many shops, antiques and great restaurants.
