Nature Lovers!: Location is perfect for nature lovers! The house sits between the Beach & 1 of America's largest wildlife refuges. The Prime Hook National Wildlife refuge is over 10,000 acres & is in a key position in the Atlantic flyway hosting hundreds of thousands of migratory birds each year including several rare species & endangered species. Common rare species that birdwatchers come to Slaughter Beach to see are the Red Knot, Ruddy Turnstone, Semi-palmated Sandpiper, Sanderling & Dunlin. Slaughter Beach is also host to the largest Horseshoe migration in the U.S. hosting several hundred thousand of the ancient species for about 1 week each year in mid-May & is a designated Horseshoe crab conservation zone. In fact the horseshoe crab eggs are partially responsible for the mass bird migration as the birds come to feed on the Horseshoe crab eggs.
Pets & Smoking: We've recently renovated our home & taken many steps to reduce or eliminate allergens including removing carpets, cleaning the HVAC system & installing hepa-filtration filters. We've done this both to allow our enjoyment of this home & to allow others w/moderate to severe allergies to do so. As a result, we cannot allow any pets inside the home. We also cannot allow smoking of any kind w/in our home. Any evidence of either will automatically result in forfeit of the entire deposit. The cost of eliminating the result of smoking or pets (i.e. HVAC cleaning, carpet removal, steam cleaning) will also be the responsibility of the renter.
We had a lovely time here at Slaughter Beach. The house is wonderful, very comfortable and well-equipped. We enjoyed the luxury of having multiple living areas to spread out and especially the screened in porch with its seclusion.
Slaughter Beach itself is a great beach, quiet and relaxing, with friendly people. We also went to Rehoboth one day, which is very close. Nice town with lots to do.
We would like to say a huge thank you to the Valeri's for opening their beautiful home to us. We will definitely be returning.
We had an absolutely wonderful time. I contacted Jill about throwing a baby shower at her house and she gave me the go ahead. She was kind enough to allow me to invite 22 people to the shower of which 15 stayed for the weekend. We had an absolutely wonderful time. I invited a lot of family and friends. The kids and grown ups alike enjoyed the close proximity to the beach. The loft was a big hit with the kids but the air conditioner was on the blink but wasn't to bad because the last 2 nights it was on the cool side. The place was perfect for the shower. Very roomy with all of us in there. The house is so large that even though I went overboard with the decorations it didn't look overdone at all. The supplies on hand were fabulous as I forgot to purchase plastic forks and there was enough silverware to accommodate everyone. The dining room table was very large and also plenty of counter space.
We enjoyed our time on the deck feeling the breeze. We also enjoyed the basketball court next door and the mini mart right down the street. The flies were a little annoying but that can't be helped when you have a lot of people coming in and out and they are prevalent in the area. Thank you for allowing us to enjoy your home. We had a great time.
Big house, good for a group of people. Nice big kitchen with a table big enough to fit everyone.
Across the street from the beach (which is on the bay NOT the ocean). People in town are friendly.
Good if you're looking for a quiet week at the beach.
Close to protected marsh for bird watching. Also tennis courts and playground right next door.
Price is very reasonable for the size.
House was not very clean when we arrived. Inside the refrigerator was dirty as were some of the dishes. Under the beds and tables needed swept. (Owner did refund part of cleaning fee because of the extra work we did.)
Took about 45 days to get our security deposit back. Better communication from the owner about the delay would have been helpful.
We can only rate our stay by saying it was "Outstanding!". My sister and I vacation with our families consisting of 4 adults, 6 twenty somethings, and one pre-teen. Everyone found something they could do, someplace they could be, and plenty of space to hang out and relax. This is next to impossible with so many young adults. We all had our own very comfortable rooms and meal times were a snap in the large family kitchen and dining area.
The house was very "livable" with kids and well equipped. We really did only need clothes, towels and sheets. The pool table was a big hit in the evenings and the hookups for internet and gaming were easy to set up. It was nice having the beach right across the street where we could all come and go as we pleased. We went to nearby Rehoboth for the water park, a great deal in the afternoons, cheaper than the morning and uncrowded. We only ate out a few nights since we had such a great cooking area.
Other reviews have mentioned the flies but oh my gosh when you see the view from the house of the preserve who cares about some flies! The other item mentioned was the sulfur smell which we only noted in the downstairs bathroom shower and as the owners have mentioned if you run the water a bit this dissipates quickly. Being on that street corner was not a problem either because there is virtually no traffic except local residents and guests. At night you could hear a pin drop. We also found the a/c in all areas of the house to be quite cool and never felt like we were hot or humid. Another plus especially if you have young kids is the playground area and basketball court next door. Again not crowded then entire week and the kids would walk over and hang out and shoot hoops in the afternoon.
We had a wonderful experience and will again rent next summer before the place books up completely. My sister and I are hoping that renting here becomes a longstanding family tradition. Thanks for sharing your home with us.
The home was very well equipped and comfortable. Everything we could possibly think of was provided. We really enjoyed the rec room downstairs and loved the big common room/kitchen upstairs. Lots of info provided on the surrounding area as well. Having the beach right across the street at a fraction of the cost of the big resort towns is a huge bonus. We are people who enjoy a quiet, private place to relax and this home fit the bill perfectly! We will definitely be back!
The house was wonderful! There was plenty of room for everyone without feeling like crammed together. It was wonderful being close to Slaughter Beach as well as to other beaches, and all the other places that we wanted to see. We enjoyed going to busier places during the day and going back to the quiet area at Slaughter Beach. The house was clean. Jill was wonderful to talk with and made sure that if we needed anything not to hesitate to let her know.
Our group consisted of two families---four adults and seven kids ranging in age from 2 to 10. The house was large enough to accommodate us all comfortably. The kitchen was spacious and well-equipted; the common spaces (living rooms) were comfortable; the bedrooms were nice. The beds were clean, which is huge to me as we have had issues with bedbugs in the past when we have rented. The cleanliness of the house met my expectations---it was not spotless but it was entirely acceptable. The flies were very annoying. Once we all got into the habit of closing doors quickly behind ourselves, we had less to contend with but they did remain a constant irritation. I do not fault the owners---it seemed to be an issue everywhere we went.
We loved the beach in Slaughter Beach. It was peaceful and relaxing. Although you could easily pop up to the house to use the bathroom, we appreciated the convenience of the restrooms there at the beach. The kids loved all the sea creatures we encountered. We even saw a sting ray that a local fisherman caught one evening at dusk. The house is not on the beach but it is very close and you can see the bay from the windows on that side of the house. It is also neat to be able to overlook the wildlife refuge from many of the windows. SB is a quiet beach---there weren't more than a handful of other families out there at any given time.
For a change of pace we did hit Rehoboth beach a few times. That is a lively beach with boardwalk and stores and big waves on the beach. It is close enough by that you can split the day between the two. We also made a day trip into Philadelphia. Slaughter Beach is a convenient location to set out on day trips from.
Jill was fantastic to work with. She answered our questions during our decision process promptly and truthfully. We had one minor issue upon arrival and she was quick to help with resolution.
