Built circa 1900, this beautiful Queen Anne house was first home to the prominent Jim Stephens and his family. Fifty five years later, it entered ours. The story goes...Ralf Carter Sr. purchased the home in a 'cash only' auction for several thousand dollars. It was here that he lived with his wife Ruth till their mid-nineties. Ralf Sr.'s hope was that his only son Ralf Jr. would retire to the Murphys home with his own wife, Evelyn. In the years following the former Carter's passing, Ralf and Evelyn lovingly restored the home to its former beauty. Until retirement day comes, the Queen Anne on 558 Main Street is now a beautiful home-away-from home for all those needing a place to stay in the charming town of Murphys, CA..
As it goes with old homes, the Queen Anne began to show its age following the elder Carter's passing. It took a year and a half to restore the home to its former beauty and no detail was overlooked. Much remains original, except for the windows. Showcasing 10' ceilings, the salon of this house was a popular place to be after the turn of the 20th century, with the parlor adjoining the living room. From the intricate woodwork details, original hardwood floors throughout, a stunning staircase, large eat-in kitchen and windows everywhere, nothings has been spared in making this house a true home. You wouldn't even know that it had no bathrooms when it was first built! The 'outhouse' has since been moved inside and made much more comfortable and modern. In fact, there are even two!

My family and I live in the quiet hills of Oakland. It is very tranquil living among nature. The Queen Anne House offers us similar feeling of peace and quiet. Even though Main Street is often busy with traffic, sitting in the backyard gives us the feeling of being away from it all. My husband and I love Murphys and had planned to retire here someday. While retirement is not feasible yet, we decided to share our home to folks like us who like to stay in quiet places and relax.
Less than a five-minute walk into 'downtown', the Queen Anne is perfect for private functions or family gatherings. (please inquire for more info on this) Sitting on an over-sized, completely fenced-in compound on a prime location on Main Street, it's the ideal place for hosting a large barbecue, (with added fee)sipping coffee at twilight or playing badminton on the lawn. And with flowers, fruits, and vegetables growing abundantly around the house, you'll find everything at your disposal.
Other things of interest include:
* a farmer's market in the summer every Friday, just around the corner from the house.
* Mercer Caverns is about a mile away.
* more than twenty five wine tasting venues and vineyards dot the Murphys landscape.
* Wildly popular concerts at the local Ironstone Vineyard's Amphitheater.
* Outdoor live music and concerts at Murphys Park.
* Lots of restaurants and shops just down the street.
* Calaveras Big Trees Park is a short drive away---for hiking, biking and picnicking.
* White Pine Lake in Arnolds offers good fishing and only about 20 minutes drive.
