It is 14 min. highway drive to the upper parking lot at the Angel Fire Ski Area.

Owner Description: Ed May purchased this house in 1991. The house was originally built around 1927. The original ranch that built this house had over 50,000 acres. At one time this area was very successful at growing potatoes and other vegetables. Now it is mostly cattle land. Remnants of old potato bunkers can still be seen around the valley. Craig Hudson, the local agent and neighbor lives 3 blocks away and he has been in this neighborhood for ten years.

About Edward May

I had been a farmer in this area for years but have moved and live in Hawaii for most of the year. I still just can't wait to return home in beautiful New Mexico to enjoy the incredible beauty there.

Edward May purchased this house in 1991

Why Edward May chose Angel Fire

Here is what a recent airbnb guest recently wrote about this property:

Remarkable... Perfection... The epitome of mountain cabin. Every picture is accurate. What a lovely cabin. What a fantastic setting. I am an interior decorator & this is exactly the vision I have of a mountain cabin. Nothing should be changed. Nothing added. Veiws are astounding. Incredible scenery of pasture land, ponds & mountains. The elk arrived everyday at 7am & 6 pm. Edward has thought of everything. The full kitchen is large & convinent. The bedroom decor lovely & the beds comfortable. The view from The living & dining area is simply amazing. TAOS & the Enchanted Circle are a short short drive away but, it's hard to leave this beautiful cabin. Thank you Edward for your vision & keeping in trust this part of the New Mexico dream of serenity & peace we all long for. Do not miss this rare experience. Perfect! Jon & Melissa Poe

I purchased this property because it has a stream moving through it and ponds with fish. It was one of the headquarters for what was once a very large ranch. The views and location make this a dream home.

What makes this house unique

The views and the wildlife will make the guest feel fortunate to be able to spend time in this really unique location. Still, to this day, you see only a couple of other homes in the distance toward the mountains.

Wow what a beautiful place!

I have never seen so many humming birds! Wondrous views, great friends add up to a GREAT time. Angel Fire, Taos & Santa Fe are all fun places. Everyone should visit The Viet Nam Memorial and Enchanted Circle Pottery.

Thank you for sharing this little slice of “Heaven”!

Everything You Want and More

  • 5 of 5

We enjoyed this home for eight days, twice what we had originally booked because it was simply too beautiful and peaceful to leave. Upon cresting the final hill to the house, a valley vista opens up and wows you before you ever step foot into the home with its great cabin look and slight scent of pinewood. Everything was prepared for our arrival - the place was immaculate, the appliances modern and easy to use, and a VIEW from every window! The front deck facing the south warmed us even on chilly, windy days. The decor and design of this 100-year-old home was fascinating. We found a new design element every day that made us stop and ponder its beauty and/or functionality. The master bed slept very well and there were plenty of extra blankets which we did not need since the house retained the heat of the soapstone stove even when the temps dropped to the low 20's. We also took advantage of the deep soaker tub. What a treat! And, let's talk wildlife. Bunches of wildlife! Yes indeed, there were elk to be seen at all distances and at all times of day and night. Sometimes in small groups and several times in a large herd, they wandered into the adjacent field, occasionally hopping the fence with ease to browse even closer. Photo ops were also available for coyotes, muskrats, prairie dogs, and wildfowl: a cinnamon teal duck of a glorious bronze color, Canadian geese, robins galore, and a bluebird that perched daily on a nearby pine and preened for the camera. There were the ever present ravens and magpies as well. Big ones! On the nearby Enchanted Circle drive, we photographed mountain goats galore. They seemed to be on a mid-morning schedule and patiently allowed us to approach (in our car) close enough to photograph several groups. The sunsets and full moon rises also made for some fantastic pictures and memories as did the crystal blue skies and a few errant white clouds that occasionally floated by the mountains. The breezes in the stands of pines all around the house were awesome. We actually "heard" the breeze coming before we felt it. This house, this setting, this owner and local manager made our spring vacation the best ever because everything we wanted, needed, and imagined was right there at the Ranch Headquarters at Black Lake. Thank you, Ed, for sharing your home. And thank you, Taletha, for making it feel like our home for a little while.

Wonderful Location! Just waiting for wifi.

This was a fantastic place to stay with our two dogs. My best friend and I came to ski at AngelFire and we were so pleased!

The only downside was the connections to cell networks and the internet. Edward has been told that high speed is coming soon, but the dialup was just ... painful. It was however VERY nice to get away for real.

The house was a perfect size for us and being able to leave foodstuffs for future guests made us feel better about buying food. The grounds are well taken care of and there is so much land.

Thanks for everything to Jaelith (sorry, I know that's wrong, but close) and Edward.

PERFECT THANKSGIVING VACATION!

  • 5 of 5

What a beautiful, peaceful, comfortable 5 night holiday getaway! The pictures do not do this ranch justice!

Our family and dogs arrived to snow covering everything and it was beautiful! Enjoyed drinking coffee in the mornings sitting in the bay window watching the elk in the meadow. Cabin is so clean and warmly decorated. Kitchen had everything! Would love to someday own a mountain home just like it.

The owner was great to work with and responded very quickly to my inquiries. It is obvious the love and pride he has in this property. Would recommend this place to anyone wanting a peaceful mountain getaway. We hope to return in the summer when it is green!

Heaven on Earth

The elk grazing in the meadows each morning and evening were amazing! This cozy little cabin provided a great view of grassy fields, mountains, every star in the northern hemisphere...all God's handiwork. None of the reviews could have prepared us for the perfection of this vacation. We arrived just after the rains, so everything was green and renewed. We just added a couple of hummingbird feeders to cap off the entertainment. (Beware of the ruby-throated bully we seem to have created!) There is even a pair of binoculars for you to use. You may want to throw in Peterson's Field Guides for birds, wildflowers and trees and a couple of comfy camping chairs to set up on the huge deck. The quiet was only broken by the coyotes, turkeys and elk calling from the mountain ridge. The log house had every amenity you could want, including gas range, dishwasher, every small appliance (including coffee bean grinder) you could want, w/d, shower & tub. The computer is dial-up and the TV has more channels than you can count, but who needs that with the picture windows?! This place is a photographer's dream. The house was spotless, the manager was awesome and the owner is lucky! If you just want to have a relaxing place to crash, cook and get close to nature, this is your place! Angel Fire didn't have a lot going on so we drove to Taos for an afternoon, but the rest of the time was spent just hanging around. Being summer, the rental was so affordable. We lucked into last-minute openings and were truly blessed!! (Downside: The gravel walkway and stairs on the deck are tough for those who need to roll luggage and coolers, so you'll need to carry everything you pack. The Lowe's grocery in town has everything you need and the prices aren't outrageous. There isn't a grill outside.) The only thing missing was our golden retriever who stayed behind to keep our son company. The twelve-hour car ride would have been too much for him, but he would have enjoyed the meadows and ponds. I could envision myself retiring to this place and utilizing that greenhouse to its fullest!!

Great stay at Ranch Headquarters!

  • 5 of 5

We had an amazing 2 nights in Black Lake! The house and property are incredible! Beautiful views, and over the top comfort...great kitchen/dining area, and very comfy beds with nice linnens( no scratchy sheets here!) SO private, we were able to see the meteor shower and hear the coyotes. A great spot to do some touring and nice to come back to after a long day of exploring. We did the Enchanted Circle drive, went to Cimmaron Canyon, had lunch at the famed St. James Hotel, went to gorge bridge, Taos pueblo, Vietman Vetran's memorial, had a margarita at the Taos Inn, went to the Toas ski valley..with a stop in Arroyo Seco. Well worth the drive outside of town! Can't wait to go back!

Just Perfect!

  • 5 of 5

Our family of four had the privilege of staying at the cabin for 3 nights and we absolutely loved everything about it! We were immediately greeted by two mule deer who were enjoyingsnacking on a few of the bushes out front. They were fun to watch.

The cabin is so well appointed. We felt at home right upon entering. Such a comfortable, clean atmosphere. The kitchen is well equipped, beds were very comfortable, and the cabin decor was very tasteful. Our son slept on the sofa bed and said it was very comfortable as well. Linens were fresh and the cabin was spotless.

We enjoyed relaxing on the porch and watching the elk graze in the meadow in the evenings. We were fortunate enough to see some baby elk as well. The views were amazing from every window in the cabin.

We can't say enough about what a wonderful few days we spent in this place. We were sad to leave this piece of heaven and hope to have the opportunity to stay again in the future.

The property manager is wonderful as well. He anwsered all of our emails promptly and was wonderful to deal with. Thank you Craig and thank you Ed for sharing your wonderful place!
