Patrick and I (Dawn) have lived in the beautiful town of Homer for 25 years. We came up to work in our 20's and never left! Neither of us had ever lived by the ocean growing up but once we saw the beauty of Kachemak Bay, the glaciers and mountains; we were here to stay! The small town community with it's abundance of wildlife, green space and friendly people has been the perfect place to raise our children and start our own businesses. We are an outdoors family--our free time is spent fishing and camping in the summer and skating and skiing in the winter. This area truly has everything that we enjoy. We hope our guests can experience Homer and have the vacation of their dreams!

The Owner purchased this house in 2007

Large, private acreage on exclusive East Hill rarely comes on the market in Homer; so when this came around, we just had to buy it! The Overlook Guest House is aptly named as it 'overlooks' Kachemak Bay and the Homer Spit with good views of Eldridge Passage and Yukon Island. The area here on the hill is really nice as it does not get windy and is very sunny. Its proximity to town is good, just a quick 5 minutes. Just wait till you see the views going down East Hill into Homer, really spectacular!

I so enjoy the wildflowers that grow in profusion around the house, wild roses thrive on the hillsides here. Often when we are here, there is moose in the yard or occasionally I will see the neighborhood porcupine waddling up from the nearby gulley. It is very peaceful and private; we really enjoy this house!

QUIET, CLEAN AND VERY GOOD LOCATION WITH EXCELLENT VIEWS

  • 5 of 5
Just returned from a 6 night stay(5 straight days of "Gorilla" fishing) at the Overlook and it was better than expected. The pictures just do not do justice to the property. The views of the bay and Homer Spit with the mountains beyond are breathtaking. The location is great with just a ten to fifteen minute trip to the Spit to board the charter boats. The house is well equipped for a VRBO - all the necessary appliances and utensils are available to make the stay comfortable for those who want to cook (including gas grill on the deck). It was very clean and I found the king size bed very comfortable (may have been contributed to by the fact that I was dead tired after 12 hours of fishing). Dawn leaves good instructions on expectations of what to do prior to leaving the property. We only saw Pat one evening when he came by to change over the water supply. It was a totally hassle free stay and I would recommend it to anyone that wants a quality stay in Homer. We plan on returning next year.

GREAT STAY.

  • 5 of 5
We just returned from staying 4 nights at this home. It is the perfect place to stay if you want to enjoy the beauty of the Homer area. The views from the living room windows are breathtaking. The house was immaculate and contained everything we needed. A nice perk to have a washer/dryer for our use. Kitchen was well equipped. We fished every day and I would say it took about 15 minutes to get to the Spit and our fishing charter. A great place to stay. Thanks.

TRUE TITLE

  • 5 of 5
We met my sister and her husband for three days. Comfortable furniture and beds to watch the Homer spit and the surrounding mountain ranges open up as the clouds lifted. Owners had the place spotless for us when we arrived. I really enjoyed the simple sparse decorations- no clutter.
Our favorite place to eat was Two Sisters and the best drive was up on the ridge.

CLEAN, COMFORTABLE HOME AT A VERY GOOD PRICE

  • 4 of 5
The house was very, very clean, comfortable, and spacious. It's very new looking. It was perfect for our family of six. Walking in, it looked like a builder's model home. The rooms are large, the kitchen has all of the equipment and utensils needed for cooking, the beds are very comfortable, nice closets, big laundry room with front-loading washer & dryer (bring your own detergent), thick bath towels. The view of Homer Spit and the mountains was spectacular. The price is very, very reasonable. Sadly, we didn't see any wildlife on or near the property. It's a short drive into Homer, and the property is very quiet and private. A word of warning...unlike every other VRBO home that we have stayed in, and there have been many, the owner does not provide bath soap, so bring your own. Luckily our daughter had with her a couple of small bars that we all shared. I had neglected to notice that bath soap wasn't provided when I emailed the owner prior to our visit asking what was provided in the house. Also, unlike other VRBO homes, don't count on finding many kitchen staples in the kitchen or anything left in the refrigerator. The only spices we found were salt, pepper, garlic powder, and cinnamon. There were no teabags, no sugar, no condiments such as mayo, mustard, ketchup, salad dressings, margarine, etc. and no cooking oil. Someone had left some coffee and sweetener packets. Coffee filters are provided. The refrigerator was bare except for some half & half. Email the owner to find out what items are provided and plan to bring/buy what you need to prepare meals, including plastic wrap and ziploc bags. I would have rated the home 5 stars if small bars of bath soap and a few more staples in the kitchen had been provided.

Owner's Response: Thanks so much for your review of the house. Upon your suggestion, I have decided to provide small bars of soap for guests that did not bring their own. Being a chef and in the food industry for 25 years, I could not in good conscious, leave opened, perishable food in the refrigerator for the next guests. I could not vouch for the safety of that food. Extra items in the house such as spices & oil come and go during the season but being a vacation rental and not a B&B, we do not supply food for our guests. I am happy to hear that you enjoyed the house and the fabulous view and hope that the lack for supplies in the house does not deter you from looking us up again if you are ever in Homer again. Dawn

SPECTACULAR VIEWS. GREAT HOUSE. PERFECT FOR BEING IN HOMER

  • 5 of 5
This is just a great place. Clean and ready upon arrival. Owners are super easy to work with. View is perfect. BBQ Grill outside. Nice little deck. Moose and porcupines came around, so that was nice. Sleeps 7 in beds with plenty of room in the home. Good kitchen, so meal prep is easy. Easy to find (not way off the beaten path like a lot of places). It's just a really great place.

BEST VIEW IN HOMER! PERFECT.

  • 5 of 5
Overlook House was everything the owners described. The Weber grill in the photohas been replaced with a gas grill. The house is situated on a bluff overlooking the Kenai Penninsula(mountains and glaciers), the Homer Spit and two of the Islands in Kachemak Bay. The mountain view is visible from every room in the house. The drive into town took us about 10 minutes, the indescribable view in sight the entire time. The Overlook was voted the best accommodation by the wedding guests

We were in town from the Chicago area to attend a wedding at Bear Creek Winery. My husband and I plus our 17-year old daughter and my mother-in-law stayed at the home for 6 nights. The house was spacious enough to host a small group for breakfast twice.

We needed to rent a home with a bedroom and bathroom in the first floor to accommodate my mother-in-law. She relished the privacy afforded to her. Theres a half bathroom, spacious laundry room and an open living/eating/kitchen area on the 1st floor and 2 BR and a bath on the second floor

I addition to the wedding, we explored the area by fishing for halibut and cod; window shopping on the spit and checking out a few of the restaurants, driving to the end of East End Road, taking a day trip to Seldovia on Rainbow Charters and walking Bishop's Beach. Olives" serves delicious soups and pizza, among other items. We tried the carrot soup and salmon bisque which where both "out of this world" yummy. My husband took a half day charter and caught halibut and cod. We cooked up some of it while we were in Homer and took about 10 pounds of fish home with us. The halibut from Kachemak Bay is the best I have ever had. Even if you don't care for seafood, try the halibut. Its always fresh at Homer restaurants. You won't be sorry.

Seldovia has some quaint shops and fabulous restaurants. After a meal of halibut fish & chips at The Linwood Bar and Grill, we hiked one of the trails to a lovely beach. Total hike was about 3 miles. On our last day in Homer, we drove to the end of East End Road for more stunning views.

During the trip, we saw many eagles, sea otters, puffins and a moose. It was fascinating to watch the birds on Bird Island, especially the way they keep their distance from the eagles. There were so many other things we wanted to explore but ran out of time. Even our teenager loved the area and didn't want to leave....and she's a city girl!

Dawn and Patrick responded quickly to our questions and concerns. Thanks!
