lovely, simple, Maine cottage

  • 4 of 5
We had a great stay at this Sand Point Rd. cottage in August, 2014. I found Roland was very responsive and easy to work with. The house is not fancy but functions perfectly. It was set up with clean linens and towels, everything we needed for the kitchen and grill, wifi, a lovely well-kept yard, games for the kids and more. My kids (ages 7 and 4) particularly loved the swing set in the side yard. I note that there is only one bathroom, but this didn't bother our group. I recommend this house and would stay here again.

A wonderful retreat.

  • 4 of 5
Sand Point is exactly as pictured in the listing. It has all of the character one would expect from an 1865 farm style house. Roland was easy to work with and quite accommodating. We weren't far from anything on the island but in a quiet setting. Our two boys (ages 5 & 8) greatly enjoyed playing in the "boys' room". Our family would definitely stay here again.

Nice house away from the hustle bustle of Bar Harbor

  • 4 of 5
This is a nice, rustic Bar Harbor-esque farmhouse. Its roughly a 8-10 min drive to Bar Harbor and 5 mins or so to one of the entrances to Acadia. Definitely recommend the Cadillac Mountain sunrise. Its a 15 min drive from the house and amazing to see. Contrary to the previous review, we did NOT smell nor see any evidence of dog. At all. The house is clean, the beds comfortable and kitchen well stocked for cooking. There is 1 large TV that is more than adequate for family viewing when in the house (but really, why would anyone want to be in a house when you have Acadia Nat'l Park and Bar Harbor to explore...) We did have some weather and minor issues with the remnants of Hurricane Arthur, but Roland was VERY attentive and worked hard to get the issues resolved.
Its important to note that if a traveler is looking for the amenities of a modern home or high-end hotel, then this is NOT the rental for you. The home is NATURALLY air conditioned with big windows that open to a wonderful ocean breeze from right down the block. As such, when you first enter the home it does present a "beach house" smell. There are NO foul odors, unless you consider the smell of the ocean air as foul.
As an active family of 5 (with young kids), we enjoyed the home and would stay again.

Terrible experience

  • 1 of 5
The description of the house is a far cry from reality. Unfortunately pictures can not be uploaded. There is a hazardous shed in the garden, it looks like it might fall apart. Its looks like a ghost house.

The main problem is once you get inside the house there is a strong stench of mold and also dogs. We paid in advance for two nights but could not stand the smell of mold in the beds and everywhere. We told the owner how we felt but he rebuffed our complains. We left the premises in the morning and found a hotel. I strongly advise smell-sensitive people not to rent this property.

Owner's Response: I would like to emphasize strongly that none of the assertions in this review are true. This property is beautiful, newly restored, extremely clean, well maintained and there is absolutely no bad smell of any kind in the house. It would be a shame to end our ability to rent this wonderful and authentic house to honest and appreciative visitors our island. These are the true circumstances of this party's dissatisfaction and their attempt to coerce a refund for their stay:
When the party originally contacted me to complain they only stated that some of them were old and thought the stairs were too steep. I told them the stairs are solid, safe, meet code and are ergonomically correct in rise and run proportions. I reminded them the house is listed as an authentic historic 1865 New England house and the stairs are typical for this period and they had not mentioned mobility issues in a number of correspondence. They were insistent I refund them stating if I did not they would take measures I would regret. Shortly after they began calling and emailing that there were terrible smells in the house, which I knew was not true but told them I would check the house which I did with others the next morning and all agreed the house was clean and fresh smelling.
I responded to their calls and emails in a timely manner. They did not anticipate the stairs in an historic house which have never been complained about in four years of renting the house, and tried to extort a refund by fabricating damaging complaints about the property. The "hazardous shed" they refer to (never mentioned to me) is a solid and stable small historic barn used for tool and equipment storage and is off limits to guests anyway. It is covered with Dutchman's Pipe ivy and considered quite picturesque by other guests.
The problem began when they showed up at noon and I told them check-in is after 4 pm and if they would come back at that time the house would be ready and I would be happy to show them around and answer any questions. They became irate saying they had never been given this information and insistent about going into the house with their luggage and drove off angrily when I told them this would delay getting it ready. We state this check-in time several places. They did not return at 4 pm and that evening I got the call demanding a refund, threatening consequences if I did not comply. Travelers should please disregard this untruthful review. It is a clean, wonderful and very special house.

Authentic Bar Harbor retreat

  • 5 of 5
Staying just outside of Bar Harbor is advantageous if you're more focused on activities in Acadia and around the island than you are on the town. Even when Bar Harbor gets busy in peak season, this house keeps you comfortably outside the bustle while retaining easy access to the park headquarters or town, when you want it. We have two preschoolers who enjoyed running around the big yard, exploring the woods, and playing by the creek. The TV, internet, and kitchen appliances all worked well. Do expect the idiosyncracies and rusticness of what is a very old house; for example, we didn't get the heating to work properly the two nights we needed it. We found Roland, the owner, to be very courteous and responsive. He keeps the house clean and stocked with essentials. We enjoyed our time here.
