West Tisbury Cabin Rental Photos and Description

Cabin, 1 Bedroom + Convertible bed(s), 1 Bathroom + Outdoor Shower, Sleeps 4

This West Tisbury, MA cabin offers 1 Bedroom plus Convertible bed(s), 1 Full Bathroom + Outdoor Shower, & more!

The Writer’s Cottage is a beautifully designed gem of a place in a secluded spot on Tisbury Great Pond. Extraordinary views, birds, sunsets, vegetation, walks and boating. Swim in the cove, sail, kayak or canoe to South Beach (the “cut”). Ideal for those who seek a “low carbon footprint.” Electricity but no TV. Lighting is mixture of gas lights and electric lamps.

A Beautiful Cabin and Beautiful Location: This beautifully designed and maintained cabin on Deep Bottom Cove, one of the finger coves of Tisbury Great Pond, is an escape from it all. Designed as a writer’s cottage, the cabin nestles peacefully in a remote location, with only a couple of other houses in distant view. The surroundings are beautiful, and the views of the cove spectacular. The cove beach is thirty seconds from the house where you can swim, sail, canoe and kayak. Sail or kayak to South Beach. The cabin has gas lights as well as a few electric lamps, but no TV or other gadgets. Small but fully equipped kitchen. Full bathroom with tub plus outdoor shower.

The cabin gives you access to the 'quiet' side of the island, but is also a great base for visiting the wonderful galleries, restaurants, and stores in the island towns.

Off-season: It is particularly nice to visit the cabin in the off-season. The cabin is on the road that is the winter entrance to the Trustees of the Reservation Long Point Wildlife Refuge. Before June 15 and after September 15 the winter entrance gate to the refuge is open, so you can walk or drive out there in just a few minutes from the cabin. This gives you easier access to South Beach. The cabin is beautiful in any weather, and the huckleberry scrub is particularly lovely in spring and fall. The snug cabin has a wood stove for heat and warms up very nicely!

Reduced rates for longer rentals : If you are looking for a place for spring or fall, contact us to discuss reduced rates for a longer stay.

Also, our family owns a larger house next door with 4 bedrooms. It is currently available parts of June and September, and one week in August. Call or email to inquire about the 'camp'.

Discovered Best Getaway Ever!

  • 5 of 5
My husband and I wanted to plan a peaceful and relaxing week away in the off season and could not have found a more incredible place.

The reviews and pictures enticed us, but we had to pinch ourselves when we finally arrived. One of the reviews mentions that the pictures don't fully do it justice. And it's true! It's simply the most beautiful, secluded and charming cottage.

It has everything we need. We never minded having no TV, limited electrical lights and a wood-burning stove. It actually made for an incredibly relaxing and romantic vacation. Such a special thing to make dinner by candlelight (with a few small lamps), read books by the fire on a crisp autumn afternoon, and enjoy the island in the fall.

The wood-burning stove heated the house beautifully - we were cozy all day and night. The kayaks were so much fun - we took them out into Deep Bottom Cove and to Long Point Beach. The location is ideal, easy to get to all points on the Vineyard, but you almost feel like you have the entire island to yourself at the cottage. It was clean, the bed was comfy, the kitchen well-stocked. The view from the windows, deck (and shower!) were absolutely breathtaking.

We cannot recommend this cottage enough! We hope and plan to return every year.

Such a gem!!

"Something for Everyone"

"Something for Everyone"

"Let me begin by saying I am no stranger to the Vineyard-I’ve been coming here to visit family for over 55 years. But it wasn’t until the summer I rented the writer’s cabin that I once again found the Vineyard I remembered as a child. Gone were the noise, the traffic and the crowded beaches. For the nature lover, beachcomber, kayaker, sailor or someone who just likes to get away from it all, the cabin on the Cove has something for everyone. You’ll start to feel like you own a little piece of this “heaven on earth” as you return again and again.

The cabin has everything you need for your vacation-even includes use of kayaks, sailboats and a canoe. You'll find everything clean when you arrive and I hope you get to meet the owners as they'll make you feel right at home. I love the outside shower, the woodstove on a cool summer night, and the king size bed that’s as comfortable as a four star hotel.

I’ve recommended the cabin to several friends and now they too come back year after year. Visitor’s kids especially love the surf and are especially thrilled when the “cut’ is open between the pond and the ocean. For younger children there is even a fresh water pond right next to the ocean.

It's fun to go out to dinner once or twice but I prefer barbecuing swordfish on the grill provided and eating on the deck, watching the sunset over the cove. I also like to take in a concert and have seen some well-known performers each summer.

Animal life abounds on this peaceful salt-water pond. Bring your camera to photograph the osprey, swans and if you're very fortunate, you may even meet the sea otters in the cove as a friend of mine did early one morning.

When I walk in the door of the cabin, I shout out, “I’m home”! Enjoy your stay!

Exquisite, Private, Martha's Vineyard Retreat

Exquisite, Private, Martha's Vineyard Retreat

I've been renting this cabin every summer for the past ten years.

The location is perfect. Several miles down a dirt road, with no neighbors, on a private pond which opens up to the ocean, if you don't mind doing some rowing to get there. We make the kayak trip to the ocean one of our special day-long annual outings. Early morning pond swims as well as sundown swims are a daily ritual. There is no TV, thank goodness, and the cabin is very rustic with some electric lights but mostly gas lamps, and we wouldn't want it any other way. The newly built back deck which looks out onto the pond is our favorite place to eat meals and we sometimes even sleep out there. Last year while I was swimming one early morning, there wasn't a sound, and I was all alone, I looked up to find three otters climbing over themselves to watch me.

If you want to be in the Vineyard and not have to deal with any crowds, this is the place for you. If you want all of the luxuries -- TV, AC, internet access, washer dryer, etc. this is not where you want to be. I wouldn't ever go anywhere else. "

Ideal escape

  • 5 of 5
This cottage is truly a balm for the soul. Nestled on the edge of deep bottom cove, with lovely water views, it's simple, serene, and an ideal escape. The interior is rustic but comfortable and tidy; there's a lovely deck that's bathed in sunlight much of the day; and the outdoor shower is entirely exposed and yet entirely private. If you're looking for a romantic getaway or want to begin writing that novel, this is your spot.

the best spot on the vineyard

  • 5 of 5
My husband and I stayed in this sweet, but spacious feeling cabin on the vineyard, right on a large ocean cove. The inside is clean but rustic with lots of character. The beautiful deck overlooks the water. It is lit by gas lamp or candlelight which is actually very cozy. Everything was clean and well taken care of. We definitely would go back!

Where Heaven and Haven Meet

  • 5 of 5
We roll out of bed into a canoe. At that time of the morning the water on our cove of Tisbury Great Pond is still and quiet. Cormorants, egrets, and heron’s swoop to feed in the glassy water of daybreak. Our own private flock of pure white swans sails on regally paying them, and us, no mind.

After breakfast we hop on our bikes and head a few miles up the dirt road. Right across the main road is the 5100-acre Correllus State Forest. Its bike paths go right by the town tennis courts where we spend most mornings. The paths also take us to a good gym with indoor courts at the airport, and Morning Glory foods, just down the road, for fresh breads and vegetables.

The cabin’s design is simple on the outside, but of significant architectural interest on the inside. The comfortable king-size bed pretty much takes up the small bedroom, sharing it only with a dresser and two closets. But this is the Vineyard. I usually wind up wearing the same pair of shorts for the entire stay.

The main living area consists of a dining table that seats four, against a large window with a view of the cove; a bank of multi-light windows at the far end offers a simultaneous view of the little private beach and, beyond it, the larger pond. I never can decide which view is more beautiful.

The ceiling is vaulted and open, and the unique roof truss fascinates me endlessly. I wonder who thought it up. The interior is built of the simplest materials, giving it the natural charm of a tree house, appropriate to being so deeply immersed in nature. The wood stove is easy to operate and heats the cabin in minutes. There is always an adequate stash of kindling and split hardwood supplied by the owners.

The galley kitchen is a little tight, but mostly we cook dinners on the outdoor grill. The cabin has no internet access, but good cell service so I can use a USB antenna to play my favorite radio stations around the country on my laptop.

The cabin shares a beach and several boats with the property’s larger house up the road. (Not visible from the cabin.) After lunch, we take a boat across the pond to where a small sandbank separates it from the ocean.

If you prefer calmer waters, there’s a Trustees of Reservations property down the road that has a calm, clear lagoon for swimming. There’s rarely anyone there, which makes it a find.

Every season, when we have to leave, the first thing I do is book the same time next year. That tells you more than any description can.

Notes:
If you have Verizon Wireless Internet access on your laptop, you can get Internet at the cabin (or our other house next door). Some other wireless services may be available, but check with your service provider's coverage map. The Vineyard is not great for coverage! The libraries have wireless access and computers, plus there is wireless access in many coffee shops etc all over the island. Of course, you can do dialup from the cabin if you download what you need on your computer before you arrive.
