THE BIRD CAGE - WAIKIKI HIDEAWAY

Waikiki Condo Rental Photos and Description

Condo, Studio, 1 Bath, (Sleeps 1-2)

The Bird Cage is a breezy and bright studio giving you clear views of the Koolau Mountains. With historic Waikiki Beach just outside the hotel lobby, the Bird Cage is the perfect home base for you.

The studio has undergone a major renovation with it's original windows replaced with double paned sliding glass windows that greatly minimize the urban sounds of Waikiki, and the interior and furnishings have been updated and refreshed. An expansive roof deck on top of the hotel provides a bird's eye view of Diamond Head. There are lounge chairs for sunbathing and tables for alfresco dining. No one else in Waikiki has a better view of the sun setting into the Pacific. Kapiolani Park is just across the street and offers the Honolulu Zoo, Waikiki Aquarium, the Royal Hawaiian Bandstand, tennis courts, soccer fields, archery ranges, weekend art shows and the city's Sunset on the Beach free concerts and movies - all this in its 500 green acres.

One of the main reasons for coming to Hawaii is of course the sun and sand. Surfing, stand up board paddling, outrigger canoeing, swimming and simply lounging on the beach are all just a few steps from the Brid Cage. Hans Hedemann's Surf School is located in the lobby of the building.

Hawaii is the crossroads of the Pacific and its culinary offerings reflect that abundantly, so while the Bird Cage has a kitchen and microwave, you are a short walk away from countless cafes and restaurants catering to every taste and price range. Similarly, if you can get yourself out of the water and away from the beach there is a lot of shopping to be done in Waikiki, and the many other shopping venues just a short drive away.

The Bird Cage is at the end of Waikiki. Kapahulu Avenue provides easy access to the freeway, and makes getting in and out of the area very easy because you avoid all the traffic in the heart of Waikiki. This is perfect for when you decide to explore the rest that Oahu has to offer.

About Kevin Lum 621

Born and raised in Honolulu, I currently live on the Mainland, but spend a lot of time in Hawaii. I have worked in the travel industry for over 35 years and have explored numerous countries around the world. I can relate to what travellers are looking for in a vacation rental because I'm looking for the same things - cleanliness, location and value.

Kevin Lum 621 purchased this condo in 2003

Why Kevin Lum 621 chose Waikiki

I grew up in Honolulu and spent a lot of time playing at the beach and on the sea wall that is less than 50 steps from the condo. Kapiolani Park was a place for family gatherings, concerts at the Shell, and of course the Zoo. Waikiki was a lot slower and quieter when I was a kid, but even today I think visitors will still find it to be a special place. If you walk down to the Diamond Head end of Kalakaua Avenue - it's still like it was in the old days.

What makes this condo unique

Location, location, location. While being at the 'end' of Waikiki might sound like you are away from all the action, that just isn't the case. Everything Waikiki has to offer is just a short walk away, but you don't have to be in the middle of the hustle and traffic. Being on the end of Waikiki makes getting in and out of the area, if you are driving, much easier than visitors staying in the middle of the high-rises. Saving the best for last, being on the end of Waikiki means there is nothing else between you and Diamond Head except the big green expanse of Kapiolani Park. Head up to the roof deck and see for yourself! In the morning it's an amazing place to have coffee, watch the sun peek over the Koolau Mountains and light up Diamond Head, listen to the monkeys in the Zoo, and see the elephants out for a stroll. Only in Hawaii!

Guestbook comments from the manager

Kevin was a responsible and welcoming host. He was professional and punctual in all of our interactions and was great about checking in by email as the reservation approached and providing comprehensive information about the studio. Even after I left, when I thought I had left something in the apartment, Kevin was quick to respond and follow-up on my email (ps Kevin, we found the sunglasses!). The apartment was as pictured/described in the advertisement. The room is spacious and very clean with a small table and two chairs for eating. As is common in studio apartments, the kitchen and bathroom area are small (e.g. the kitchen and bathroom sink are one and the same), but space aside, the apartment is outfitted with everything you need to use the kitchen should you want to. The top floor patio was a major bonus, offering unobstructed views of Diamond Head and a wonderful, light breeze in the evening hours. More broadly, the location of this property is fantastic! It is a matter of steps from Waikiki Beach and within a 5-10 minute walk of free parking. It has great access to Honolulu, Waimea, Diamond Head and the highway. So, whether you plan to stay on Waikiki everyday or see every inch of Oahu, this is a great jumping off point. I strongly recommend this property for its location, cleanliness and the professionalism of the host.

Apartment + Owner = Winning Combo

A little late in submitting this review but just have to say: this place is a gem. It is beautifully located in Waikiki, near all the shops, restaurants and the beach but yet far enough away that at night you can have a peaceful sleep. The apartment is tidy, comfortable and efficient - nobody comes to Hawaii to spend all their time in their hotel room but at the end of a long day, you will be happy to come back to this place. Kevin is amazing - I have never dealt with someone more professional, more efficient, more pleasurable and more helpful. He replied to all my emails rapidly and was extremely helpful in making sure our first trip to Waikiki was memorable. If you are torn as to which place to stay while in Waikiki, not only will this apartment's location win you over but if you get to deal with someone like Kevin, don't even think twice and book this place.

Owner's Response: Thank you very much for your kind words. We've worked very hard to make the Bird Cage a special place for guests, and it's gratifying to hear that our efforts are appreciated. Clearly we're biased, but we agree that the location cannot be beat; steps from the beach, but still away from the hectic center of Waikiki. It's fun to introduce first time visitors to everything Oahu has to offer, and it was a pleasure to point you towards places and activities that aren't in all the guide books. We like adventurous guests!

Hawaii is a very special place and I glad you were able to spend some time here. Hopefully we'll be able to welcome you back to the islands soon!

Amazing Condo on Waikiki Beach!

  • 5 of 5
We were only here for a short time but wish it were longer. The condo was so cute, extremely clean, and in the perfect location. We walked everywhere! I loved the bright colors and personal touches. I would definitely stay here again! Kevin was extremely responsive and so nice. I wish I had gotten the chance to meet him. Thank you for everything!

Owner's Response: Thanks for the nice review!

Just a few steps from the beach, and a short stroll from the center of Waikiki, we're glad to hear you agree the Bird Cage is perfectly located. We've worked hard to make the condo bright, breezy and welcoming place and it's nice to hear from guests that we've succeeded. Please come back anytime!

Perfect location for us

  • 4 of 5
We had three goals for Waikiki and they were all accomplished from this location - first to be able to climb Diamond Head from our condo, second to visit Pearl Harbour on city bus (#42), third to walk the strip and beach at night. Well equipped and only one downside - the louvred windows let in too much noise at night as we are light sleepers. Otherwise it was an excellent place to stay.

Owner's Response: We're glad to hear you agree the Bird Cage is an ideal location for most things visitors to Oahu would like to do. Many guests think of Diamond Head as a majestic mount that you gaze on from the roof deck, so we're happy to see you went the extra mile (literally) to climb to the summit. The view is worth it!
The louvered windows are being completely replaced this week, and each apartment is having new double paned windows installed so the city noises will be greatly reduced. At the same time studio is being refreshed and updated.
We hope you will be able to come back to the islands on another visit to enjoy the improvements. Thanks again for being our guest.

Paradise in Waikiki! Perfect location.

  • 5 of 5
We loved staying here! It is the perfect size to crash after a day in the island. It was near everything yet away from all the buzz and craziness of the Waikiki strip. The 10th floor sundeck was a treat with a view of Diamond Head and the beach. There's a moped place next door on Lemon Rd that we used to rent some mopeds and ride them around the island, especially to Manoa Falls. Enterprise is about 10 mins down the street so you can rent a car for the day on the cheap. You are literally two steps from the beach. The apartment was clean, the mattress was so comfy and it was quiet at night. We definitely enjoyed ourselves. Kevin was great at communicating and making us feel welcome. Will definitely be back!

Owner's Response: Wow! Thanks for the kind words. We're very happy to hear you enjoyed your stay at the Bird Cage, and that you agree it's a terrific location for doing just about everything visitors would like to do while on Oahu. Then again, with the beach just a few steps from the lobby... it's also a great place to do nothing at all. Also glad to hear you took advantage of the roof deck and its unobstructed view of Diamond Head. It's definitely a perfect place to either start the day, or end it with a cool drink and the sunset.

Once again thanks for choosing the Bird Cage for your holiday, and we hope to welcome you back to the islands some day soon.

Restful get away

  • 4 of 5
Fun little condo close to the beach at the quiet end of Waikiki. Beautiful sunrises and sunsets from the shared balcony on the 10th floor. Made new friends sharing a morning cup of coffee or cocktails at night. Condo was all that it was advertised. It must get a lot of use and may need a little extra TLC to touch up some minor details. It was stocked with plenty of beach equipment and good travel information. Had a wonderful time there and wished I could stay longer.

Owner's Response: Thanks for your positive comments. We're glad to hear you enjoyed the roof deck. We think it's the best view in Waikiki and only available to guests.

Apologies for any aspects of the studio that need a little more TLC. The building is being repainted and the Bird Cage is having it's entire exterior window wall replaced in the next few weeks. We have been waiting for the construction to be finished in order to complete maintenance on the interior.

We hope you can come back to the islands and see how we've done.

Thanks again!

A nice place to stay

  • 4 of 5
A cute little studio that provides easy access to a quieter stretch of the beach. The place was super clean when we arrived and all the pictures were accurate. The Waikiki Grand isn't the newest or swankiest building in the area but everything you might need is in walking distance. During our stay construction on the facade of the building meant that the view of Diamond Head from the 10th floor sundeck was somewhat obstructed, but the ocean view was a lovely sight.

Kevin was amazingly responsive and welcoming every step of the way, with everything from answering questions to providing advice and recommendations. Midway through the trip, when we notified him about the small roaches appearing in the bathroom/kitchen area (no doubt a fact of life in Hawaii, but we weren't sure if we were seeing more than average), he was fast to respond and got us in touch with Jeannie, who came that day to check it out and apply bug spray as needed.

All in all, a great option for housing in the Waikiki area if you're on a budget. Note that if you get parking through the Waikiki Grand (priced at $17 a day), avoid reserving the spots on the upper level beneath the big trees—I think it's spots 5, 6 and 7—you will find your car covered in bird poop! The underground section is a better bet.

Owner's Response: Thank you very much Sarah! We're glad to hear you enjoyed your stay the Bird Cage. I'd agree with you that the Waikiki Grand is an older hotel, but the building maintenance is top notch. The current repair and repainting are part of a large upgrade of the property and we're looking forward to completely new double paned windows by the end of the year and a quieter environment for guests. The building work aside - I'm happy to hear you agree the location is ideal. Just steps to the beach and the center of Waikiki just a short stroll away.

Thank you very much for the kind words and we hope to welcome you back to the islands soon!
