'Windiana' is a waterfront property nestled between towering white pine trees in one of the prime spots on Long Pond facing its bordering mountains, Beech, Mansel, and Bernard. It is on a less populated part of the pond with untouched Acadia National Park land directly across. Long Pond is the largest lake on Mt. Desert stretching four miles. It will take you a week to see all the gems on Long Pond! Canoe to Duck Rock for a picnic. Duck Rock is a magnificent sheet of rock that cuts gradually into the lake. Perfect for swimming with all ages. You can even pick up an Acadia National Park trial up the Perpendicular on Mansel Mountain. Picnic to Rum Island and explore this beautifully situated island looking down the lake. Snorkel and find the boulders the size of rocks off its shores. It is a crystal clear fresh water lake. It is perfect for swimming, boating, and bass fishing. Two kayaks and a large canoe are included.

Windiana is 75 feet from the water. The living room has a cathedral ceiling and a bubble skylight at the center of the house. The main room has a large sofa that converts to a full sleep sofa.. The main bedroom has a queen bed. The second bedroom has a full bed and the third bedroom has two twins. There is a small well equipped kitchen area and large bathroom with a washer/dryer. This house is made for indoor/outdoor living. The deck wraps around two sides of the house and includes adirondacks, chaises, a gas grill, and dining table.

Two others cottages may be available for rent for larger groups of 8-10. These include another bedroom and bath. Windiana II is one main room with water views from all sides. It has a queen bed, wicker couch and chairs, small refrigerator, bar sink, full bath, and a sleeping loft with two full mattresses. This room is great for a couple or a group of friends. The cottage has a deck and a view of the lake as well.

Enjoy the spectacular view from the decks and watch for loons and eagles. Take an early morning kayak ride while the lake is like glass. Sun and swim on the private dock and explore a fresh water lake. Canoe to Rum Island or Duck Rock for a picnic. Fish for bass and salmon. Watch the moon rise over Beech and curl up in a blanket and star gaze at night. Listen to the call of the loons and enjoy this unique property surrounded by ten acres of woods. This is Paradise!

About The Owner

As a young child, my parents brought us to Mt Desert as my grandmother was a Somes. I have always been in love with the island and wanted to capture its magic. I have a masters in Art History and Museum work and worked in the Smithsonian before raising three children. I began painting in oil in 2000. I have always been in love with the quality of light in Maine. I paint on the island in the summer and show my work in Somesville at the Gallery on Frenchman's Bay.

Why The Owner chose Somesville

In 1761 our ancestor Abraham Somes settled Mt. Desert. This property came down to us from our grandmother who was a Somes. The land was originally part of an island on Long Pond. In the 1950's a causeway was built over to the island. Today this area is now called Northern Neck. The Northern Neck Road is great for walking or running.

What makes this cottage unique

Built on a point on a fresh water lake about 30 feet from the water's edge, 12 foot decks on two sides, Dock, Swimming, kayaks, and a canoe, One of the best views on the lake and on Mt. Desert Island!!!

This beautiful and spacious contemporary cabin is located in one of the most pleasant spots one can imagine--on the tip of a peninsula in a gorgeous lake on Maine's beloved MDI. You will enjoy the views of the lake and hills, untouched nature on the protected shores of Long Pond, the mature forest surrounding you, and the easy access to acadia National Park. For our three-generation family it was the perfect destination.

The house was very spacious, immaculate, and comfortable. Diana provided great tips on what to do and see in acadia. We had gorgeous views of the lake, and the swimming, kayaking and canoeing were fantastic. Nothing was missing, our vacation was perfect. The best part for us was having privacy away from the bustle of Bar Harbor. It was lovely coming home at night after adventurous days and hearing only the lapping of water and the call of loons. We definitely will return!! One of the very best weeks away we've ever had!

This immaculate cottage sits on an intimate point on Long Pond in Somesville on Mount Desert Isle. If you are looking for a beautiful and peaceful retreat to enjoy the clear, bright air of Maine, surrounded by Long Pond and pine forests, then you will spend idyllic hours at Windiana. The cottage has access to a short mossy shoreline trail, a dock for swimming, kayaks and a canoe to explore the quiet waters of Long Pond where you will see loons, eagles and other wildlife. You will surely see deer on your ride through the woods to the cottage.

The cottage is small, but the features are top quality, including a beautiful natural walk-in shower. Except for the odd rainy day, we spent all our time out doors on Long Pond and enjoying the hiking and biking trails on MDI, including the trails around Jordan Pond and those at Wonderlands where at low tide the tidal pools are amazing to explore.

Mrs. Ansley is a descendent of the original settler in Somesville and is active in the community and prolific in her painting. We feel fortunate to have shared her beautiful haven for two weeks this summer.

This was one of our children's favorite vacations! We vacationed here with our four children ages 4, 6, 8 and 10 and our big black lab! First of all, Diana is a wonderful person to rent from. She checks on you to make sure everything is going well and gives you great advice about the island. Her home is beautiful with three bedrooms overlooking Long Pond. Long Pond, in my opinion, is the best place to swim on the island. The water is very warm. My kids loved running down to the pond and swimming out to the dock. We brought floats and squirt guns and they had a great time. We cooked many meals and ate on the deck. This rental is not in the hustle and bustle of Bar Harbor. We have done that and this rental was far more fun for us. Bar Harbor is close enough that we went there everyday to eat, shop and tour. Acadia National Park is even closer. We spent a lot of time hiking and touring the park also. I have written extensively about our vacation to Long Pond, Acadia and Bar Harbor. Amazing View!

This was a father / daughter trip and our first visit to Acadia. We are both kayakers (Dad is also a fishermen), and this was a perfect place for us. More then anything this location is all about the view and it is the best on Long Pond. Considered the quiet side of Acadia, it is a great location on the island and only about 20+ min from Bar Harbor. For kayakers, there was plenty to explore each day and fish to catch. We got lucky as the weather was perfect (expect one rainy afternoon), as it was the last week in September... mid 60's and even into the 70's. This allowed us to cook outside almost everyday. There is a great deck and even a hammock to enjoy the views. The house is adorable. My dad stayed in the main house as I was in my own little back cottage. Most also note that the owners where so helpful to answer all our questions.
*I always like to add tidbits: There is no TV or Washer/Dryer. No big deal as there was a radio and we were there to get away from it all. Though we did get internet access (a rare thing on this island) so we were not completely cut off. The house is small, as is the bathrooms and kitchen, but for two people it was perfect. It would also work for 2 couples or a small family. Also the road through the island to get to the house is not paved and is one lane width, so you do need be aware of the occasional passing car or deer.
We had a great time and a great stay and truly enjoyed the peace, the quiet and the amazing scenery!
