Located just 10 km from Verona, in the enchanting green hills of the Marcellise Valley, Villa Sogara is a stunning historical mansion filled with treasures, built during the 15th-18th centuries upon Roman ruins. The owners have completely restored and remodeled the Villa, which contains 6 bedrooms, 4 bathrooms, a fully appointed kitchen, dining room, library, music room, various living rooms and outdoor relaxation areas.

A new swimming pool with a terraced sunbathing patio is surrounded by picturesque vineyards. Daily cleaning service, Wi-Fi internet access, air conditioning, dishwasher and washing machine are included. This stellar location is ideal for exploring Veneto and the surrounding area, for attending the many international fairs held in Verona or just for avoiding the chaos of modern life.

Veneto is a region full of history and tradition, great also for local food and wine production. Many interesting sites to be visited are Venice, Vicenza, Padova, and Lake Garda. You will find countryside, mountains and seaside, lakes and sea beaches.

Verona is one of the main tourist destinations in north-eastern Italy, thanks to its artistic heritage, several annual fairs (Vinitaly, Fieracavalli, Marmomacc and many others), shows and operas, such as the Opera Festival in the Arena, the ancient amphitheatre built by the Romans.

Because of the value and importance of its many historical buildings, mostly of Roman and Medieval ages, Verona has been named a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Moreover, Verona is the setting of Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet.

Verona's Natural history museum contains one of the most valuable collections of fossils and archaeological remains of Europe. Castelvecchio Museum features a collection of sculptures, statues and paintings in a magnificent castle built in 1354-1356.

About Tommaso Peruzzi

This villa was bought by my great-grandparents in 1929. Now it's my duty to preserve it in good shape and to share it with those who appreciate this kind of mansion and look for the charm and tranquility of the Italian countryside. I had great days staying here with my grandfather when I was a child, and I hope that you will be able to have such a good time too.

Tommaso Peruzzi purchased this villa in 1929

Why Tommaso Peruzzi chose San Martino Buon Albergo

The villa is located in the countryside in the eastern part of Verona. While the property is surrounded by vineyards of Valpolicella wine DOC production area, it has also easy connections to the motorway, to the airport, and to the cities of Verona, Venice, Padua, Mantua, and Vicenza. Lake Garda is also easily reachable in about 30 minutes, and with the new high speed railway lines also Florence and Milan are an easy destination for a daily trip. Guests come here to spend a vacation in a true piece of history, and also for many activities like food and wine tours, art history, museums, Opera, and so on.

What makes this villa unique

Are you tired of hotels that look pretty much all the same? Have you had enough of cold, impersonal courtesy? Do you appreciate historic houses furnished with original antiques? Are you in search of a 'home away from home' to spend time and relax with your family and friends, surrounded by lush countryside? Villa Sogara is the place to be!

Guestbook comments from the owner

“Fabulous---a "once-in-a-lifetime" experience that I would love to repeat every year!!”

Villa Sogara is a beautiful and unique property, a bit outside of the city, but that was just fine with us. Nestled among vineyards, olive trees and winding roads, it was a charming escape into the daily life of the Veneto. Tommaso and Ela are the most charming and down-to-earth inn-keepers/new friends one could ask for, and the view they offered into the villa's and their family's history in the area surpasses anything that could be gained from a history book. Combine Renaissance beauty and elegance with country home comfort and up-to-the minute, modern amenities and conveniences---and you have the ingredients for a perfect home-away-from-home. And then there are the cuckoos that call softly from the treetops all day long.....already plotting my return!

The Only Way to Experience Italy

  • 5 of 5
Villa Sogara has many things. It has breathtaking beauty (the pictures online do not do it justice). It has a fascinating history. It has wonderful hosts (warm, entertaining and informative hosts). And it has the usual things you would expect from a pool to an elevator, to a huge kitchen and several great spots to have a meal with lots of people.
Our only complaint is that we were not able to share it with more people. Our party was a family of four and we only used a small bit of the villa. We had hoped to share our time with some nearby relatives, but our plans did not materialize.
You will need a car as there is little that you can get to by walking - but you will spend a day or two doing nothing but lazing by the pool and exploring all the rooms and antiques.
Day trips to Verona and Lake Garda are all easily accomplished. Sirmione is a must - as is going for a swim in the lake and renting a boat to see some of the sights from the water. There are plenty of places to rent a boat and the rental transaction takes about 30 seconds - hand over some Euros and your license and hop on the boat. No paperwork! Malcesine is also worth the drive - it takes an hour or so, but the drive through the mountains and through small towns is unforgettable.
Tommaso and Ela live in the apartment next door. They are available for anything you need and are a phenomenal resource. If you want privacy, they disappear. But when you come and go through the big iron gate, they will check in to see how things are going. You will soon find that you look forward to seeing them and want to share time with them and learn more about their family history, the villa and the surrounding area. Tommaso and Ela also prepared one of the best meals of our trip - we dined outdoors next to 2000 year old columns and enjoyed a 5 course gourmet meal. Tommaso's 12 year old niece joined us and helped take care of the couple's baby daughter, Sofia. It was an experience we will not soon forget. If you like dogs, they'll let Stella run around with you a bit, too. That made my daughters happy. If you don't like dogs, Stella will be no where to be seen...
Tommaso is an email fanatic - he and I corresponded quite a bit before our arrival. If you have questions, he has answers. And if he has a recommendation for a particular restaurant, take his recommendation!
We have rented many homes, but Villa Sogara certainly stands out as one or our luckiest finds!

Villa Sogara... outstanding!

  • 5 of 5
Our group of 7 immensely enjoyed our recent stay at Villa Sogara. Everything about the villa and surrounding area was exactly as described. Tommaso was a great help answering our many questions before and after our arrival, and he and Ela were fantastic, caring hosts. For example, we spent one night of our week in the Dolomites, and I had failed to inform Tommaso and Ela of this beforehand. They were concerned about our well-being and made efforts to contact us to confirm all was well.

The villa has been lovingly restored and is in fantastic condition. It was immaculately clean upon arrival, and the daily cleaning and mid-week towel change was welcomed (a service often not offered in similar properties). The pool looked very inviting, but the weather had turned a bit cool and our daily agenda so full that we weren't able to make use of it. The kitchen was fully functional and well-stocked with dishware, cookware, etc. The bathrooms were modernized and quite roomy by European standards.

Tommaso and Ela suggested several restaurants and gelato shops nearby. Our favorite was Trattoria La Torre in Mezzane di Sotto. The nearby town of San Martino Buon Albergo is quite nice with a great bakery, pizza restaurant (Sapore), and gelato shop. Tommaso arranged a visit to the nearby winery of San Cassiano. Tommaso himself conducted a most informative tour of the vineyards. The owner (Mirko) then joined us and generously allowed us to sample all the varieties of Valpolicella wine, as well as some outstanding olive oil (also produced on-site). It was a fantastic experience and quite inexpensive.

This area of the Veneto is well-located as a base for day trips. Cars are pretty much a necessity to fully experience this beautiful part of Italy. Of course, Verona is the nearest city of interest, but Padua and Venice are a short train ride (or drive) from Verona. Lake Garda (Sirmione, Bardolino, etc.) is also very close. As mentioned, we were also close enough to drive up to the Dolomites.

In summary, we highly recommend Villa Sogara for a larger group who wants a beautiful, quiet setting that offers all the amenities (including WiFi!) and is convenient for exploring all this region has to offer.

Quintessential Italian Villa

  • 5 of 5
Great villa, great location, great hosts. Our family of seven, two couples and three singles, thoroughly enjoyed our week at Villa Sogora. The villa is old, charming, well-appointed. Good sleep accommodations, except for the hard mattresses (which we found all over Italy), great bathrooms, a charming kitchen, great living space. Wish we had more time to enjoy the Villa and grounds, but the location was so good, we were on the go all time. The hosts, Tomasso and Ella, are very supportive and willing to recommend great local options. Would highly reoommend a stay here. Just lovely!

A Step Back in Time

  • 5 of 5
Right from our initial communication with Tommaso I knew that our week at Villa Sogara would be magical.
The booking process was easy and Tommaso's reassurances put our minds at rest. Arriving at the villa later than expected we were greeted by Tommaso and Ela as if we had been friends for years. We had arranged that we would have supper prepared for us that evening by our hosts. This was by far one of the highlights of our trip. Imagine arriving at a 16th century villa filled with antiques and family treasures, surrounded by rolling vineyards to find in the loggia, a table set for 8 with beautiful white linens, candles and greenery. The best was yet to come. After settling in we were served an amazing meal prepared by Ela.
As course after course arrived, we breathed a sigh of contentment and realized how fortunate we were to be spending a week in this wonderful location. The villa is beautifully appointed, very comfortable for our group of 8 and its proximity to everything makes it a wonderful location from which to explore this area. Verona is only a 10 minute drive so you have easy access to the city, but a wonderful country location.
Tommaso and Ela are the icing on the cake. Their knowledge of the area, ability to arrange outings, cooking classes with Ela added to our experience. We will never forget our lazy reflective Tuscan days - spent lounging under the trees, in the pool or sitting around the table in the loggia. We send a heartfelt thanks to Tommaso and Ela for sharing their little slice of heaven with us. We know that we will return.

Tranquility

  • 5 of 5
A stay at Villa Sogara is a truly unique experience. It is as if one were living at a time in the past in elegant surroundings but with all the modern conveniences. One of the pleasures of our stay was wandering through the villa and enjoying the treasures held in each room. Our hosts Tommaso and Ela were most interested in answering our questions about the history of the villa. As well, they offered suggestions for restaurants, wine and olive oil tastings that were exceptional. In fact, they were available to help with anything we needed. We had arranged to have dinner provided at the villa on our first night. Because of traffic problems we arrived later than we expected but Tommaso assured us that it would not be a problem. Imagine arriving at this beautiful villa surrounded by grape vines on rolling hills. On the loggia the table was beautifully set for the eight of us. But the best was to come. Our dinner prepared and served by our gracious and charming hosts, Ela and Tommaso was outstanding. We will never forget this night and our stay at Villa Sogara! There is a special feeling of tranquility and peace here and we thank Ela and Tommaso for sharing this with us.
