Dream Come True!

Staying at the Red Shutters was a dream come true for us. There were 10 people in our group, 3 of whom were small children. Not only was the house kid-friendly, but the children (and the adults) were positively enchanted by the peacocks that frequently stroll through the yard and the horses that trot past the house. The photos posted here look exactly like the house itself, although you need to be there and experience the layout and the gorgeous yard to fully experience its charm. The house is well maintained and has a great kitchen for making big dinners with a group, and the on-site laundry is a plus. Eileen and Steve were very helpful in making us feel at home. Eileen even came by to show us a hammock hanging in the yard.
We would definitely recommend bringing a car if you are able to. It costs less than parking on the mainland for the week, and while it is a short drive to most attractions from the house, it might be a bit too long of a walk for some. Driving on the island is easy, and it doesn't take long to figure out how to get to most places. We enjoyed visiting Mohegan Bluffs (a better beach for adults, as the walk includes a steep staircase and the waves can be rough) and Town Beach (excellent for the kids and adults alike). Renting a bicycle was an enjoyable way to get around and see most of the perimeter of the island (if you are athletically inclined).
We loved our stay on Block Island at the Red Shutters, and we plan to return every year. We hope that our children come to think of it as their "home away from home."
