About Kathy Rose

We are working professionals who are extremely busy with work, families, and friends. When the weekends roll around, we head up to our favorite lake 'up-north.' When we are not entertaining, we love to take advantage of the lake as we canoe, kayak, and boat.

Kathy Rose purchased this cottage in 2008

Why Kathy Rose chose Irons

Our family has been retreating to Harper Lake for the past 30 years. We have found Harper Lake to be one of the most relaxing places to unwind and de-stress after a busy workweek. Nothing beats the soothing nature of being on the water and the tranquility of star-gazing away from city lights. In August, the aurora borealis display is awesome! We bought our cottage because it is an easy drive from home and the perfect getaway from the busyness of our normal lives.

What makes this cottage unique

The wooded setting with the private lake frontage creates a beautiful view no matter what window we look out. Our most favorite ritual is going for a walk around the lake each morning sipping our favorite coffee. We love this location because it is surrounded by national forest and recreation areas - all of which are beautiful places to hike and walk.

Charming Cottage in the Woods

  • 5 of 5
We enjoyed our stay at White Pines Cottage. The cottage is more charming than the pictures reflect. Campfire by the water, dinner on the deck - very relaxing. Cabin is accurately described - it has a downstairs bedroom with a door and the upstairs sleeping area is a loft - open on one side to look down on the living/dining area. If traveling with a baby, consider bringing a baby gate for the bottom of the stairs. Pack and play doesn't fit in downstairs bedroom but can be tucked snugly between 2 beds in loft. Kitchen is well stocked. Extra plastic chairs on porch can be brought to dining table if needed. We cooked in all meals but one. Lake is not huge but fun for canoeing and paddle boating. Life jackets provided. Roger and Kathy very helpful. We drove to Empire Beach (beautiful!), Sleeping Bear Dunes, and Traverse City (we love Blue Tractor pizza). Not a lot of activities super-close to cabin - expect to drive a ways to them - but cabin is a nice and quiet retreat. Bring your favorite board games and books for relaxing. Thank you, Roger and Kathy, for sharing your charming cottage with us - a very nice, clean, affordable place for a family vacation.

Owner's Response: We enjoy sharing our cottage with you! We are going to have to look up Blue Tractor Pizza in Traverse City. :-)
Next year, in addition to the canoe and paddleboat, we plan to have a stand-up paddle board available. Come back and try it on Harper Lake!

A very nice place to stay!

  • 4 of 5
My husband and I really enjoyed the beautiful view of the lake - even when it rained. The cabin is very cozy and it was very quiet and peaceful while we were there. We had a fun time taking the paddle boat and canoe out on the lake. Would definitely stay here again!

Owner's Response: So glad you enjoyed your stay! Fall is our favorite time up on Harper Lake because it is so quiet and peaceful. Lots of my best memories are drinking coffee on the deck overlooking the lake.

Secluded Couples Getaway

  • 5 of 5
My boyfriend an I have been looking for a secluded fishing getaway when we stumbled across White Pines. When we arrived to the house, it looked just like the picture. The neighborhood was quiet and peaceful and the house was filled with all the basic necessities (especially the kitchen). We loved the deck and grill and the location was defiantly secluded; aside from the nearby Dublin General Store (try their jerky), every other place was a bit of a drive.

TIP: ATV rentals are a must! We had a blast driving on the groomed Michigan trails.

Our goal was to find a stocked lake for fishing. We did catch bluegill, crappie, bass, and pike. However, they were defiantly scarce. Aside from the lack of fish, everyone was really friendly and respected the lake's rules. We decided to bring our own canoe even though they already had one on the property and we did put the paddle boat to much use. The water itself was so clear that we even decided to jump and swim in the lake.

We truly enjoyed our time at White Pines, and it now feels like a "home away from home". We also really appreciated the consistent communication with Kathy, everything was really organized. Thank you for opening your home to us, we are already looking forward to another visit real soon. :)

Wonderful family vacation spot

  • 5 of 5
This was our second stay at Harper Lake, we stayed last Labor Day weekend, and loved it so much, it was our family choice to spend our vacation there this summer.
The whole family really enjoyed being there, we did some fishing, sat by the campfire, played a lot of games on the deck overlooking the lake-we also rented a pontoon for the day on Tippy Dam pond, we tubed the Pine river for a day as well, there is plenty to do. The cottage itself is very comfortable and roomy enough-we had 6, and there was room for everyone without using the foldout couch. Everything is well taken care of, and the owners are great! When we go north we will definitely stay again! Thanks Roger and Kathy!

Blessed retreat!

  • 5 of 5
Thanks so much for a blessed retreat for our family. In every way:
-the loons singing their songs on the lake
-the comfortable, but not overly modern, cottage. Not at all rustic, but not like a fancy, modern home...just like an Up North cottage should be. Well stocked. (Except I see it's listed with 2 bathrooms and for the life of me, I only found one...)
-the canoe, for early morning rides in the lake. The paddleboat for great laughs and trips around the lake. It also helped taxi the girls out beyond the weeds to the clear, swimming water.
-the diving raft, for lots of family fun and swimming.

About an hours drive to Moomers in Traverse City, and to Interlochen. So a "big city" adventure usually took place in Ludington. But hey, we were there to get away from the big city. And we certainly did.

Yes, the albino deer was spotted, along with hundreds of other natural living creatures.

The fire pit by the lake was a highlight of the day. Hobo pies, marshmallows and so much more. Times of chill out fun was had by all.

We simply cannot wait to go back to White Pines again, hopefully next summer. Thank you for sharing your 'other place' with us!

Owner's Response: Hi Greg and Peggy - we are so glad you enjoyed White Pines! We look forward to retiring there someday ourselves...in the future.

I have already searched out the listing and found where 2 baths were entered. OOPS! This was an inputting error and I have already fixed it. Thanks for the heads up!

We hope you will come again next year. Kathy and Roger

Canadian Thanksgiving Getaway!

  • 5 of 5
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at White Pines, the cottage was lovely, the price was definitely affordable and the view was spectacular. We were able to ride our ATV's all over the area (when it wasn't raining - not their fault!) and take in the fall colours and some beautiful little lakes and towns. We would definitely return to this cottage, but while we were out, we were looking for one of our own, so Kathy and Roger might just end up being our neighbors!
