Overview

Brule House Rental Photos and Description

House, 6 Bedrooms, 4 Baths, (Sleeps 20)

The Lake Superior Barn is a 4,250 sq. foot home with 4 bathrooms and accommodations to easily sleep 20 people in the 6 bedrooms and 15 beds…. It is designed to accommodate multiple families with open bathrooms and individual toilets and showers. The home is just 30 minutes east of Duluth on the sandy south shore of Lake Superior.

Lake Superior Barn stands on 320 acres of remote wilderness and sandy beach. The home sits on the south shore of Lake Superior, staring across the lake to the North Shore cities of Duluth and Two Harbors whose lights twinkle in the distance at night. The property is completely surrounded by the Brule River State Forest so there is not another home on the Lake Superior shoreline for miles… Enjoy the secluded sandy beach or walk it like an ocean looking for beach-glass. Listen to the waves crash or swim in the cleanest of all the Great Lakes where the temperature can reach 60 or 70 degrees in the shallow, sandy bottom water. Warm up to a driftwood fire or roast s'mores on the waterfront.

Once back to the house, wash the sand off your feet in the outside shower while taking in the 180 degree view of Lake Superior. Enjoy the 1600 sq foot reclaimed deck just outside the beautiful kitchen and a pantry with all the extra ingredients and spices you may have forgotten. Build a fire with firewood provided in the stone fireplace or lay in a bean bag and pick a book to read from the stocked bookshelves in the loft. Lake Superior Barn has 6 bedrooms, 4 bathrooms and 3 showers built from the reclaimed lumber, steel and nails of 7 turn of the century Minnesota barns. The game room has radiant concrete heat to warm your toes as you play ping pong, Foosball or lounge on the couch to watch a movie

The Lake Superior Barn is a unique and rustic experience... there is a TV, but no satellite or cable TV... plenty of cards, books and boardgames! We do have APPLE TV... like a large iPod with movies, TV shows & music.

On the 320 acres of forest, there are trails through the woods and bridges over Haukkula Creek that flows the length of the property. Pick raspberries and wild strawberries in the summer or snowshoe the woods and trails in the winter… either way, you will never encounter another person on the private and secluded land. End the day by building a fire while overlooking Lake Superior and watch the summer sun set over the hills of Duluth.

Why Tom Wolfe chose Brule

We fell in love with the Lake, the sound of the waves, the endless sandy beach and the fact that you are 30 minutes from an amazing city like Duluth, but you feel so remote and surrounded by nature.

What makes this house unique

The property is totally remote and surrounded by State forest... you will very likely not see another person. The reclaimed home is unique and the feel is rustic. The beach is secluded and it feels like you are on an ocean.

Guestbook comments from the owner

I am writing just to let you know what a lovely time we had at the Barn. The detail that went into designing the Barn is amazing. The winding road leading up to the Barn and it's placement on hundreds of acres make this stay remote, cozy, rustic and yet luxurious. It has all the amenities you would want with still feeling like your not in a polished cabin. We had 8 people and everyone had their space and we still had plenty of room for more. The view is amazing. We had a fabulous time exploring and just enjoying each other and the Barn.

Thank you!

Very disappointed with how the owners handled problems with their property!

  • 1 of 5
We were very disappointed to arrive to a freezing cold barn for the weekend of our daughter's wedding. We arrived on a very cold Thursday and did not have any heat until late afternoon on Friday. Alarms and the power went off through our entire first night, which we had to repeatedly tend to. The owners have brushed off our concerns saying they did the best they could. The property is beautiful, the owners not so good!

Beautiful Group Getaway

  • 5 of 5
This is the perfect getaway for a large group. We had a fantastic time reconnecting...a group of 18 friends. Despite the cold, rainy weather, we had more than enough to do. Warm cozy fires, ping pong and shuffleboard tourneys, a dip in the wood-fired hot tub and sauna. We left renewed and refreshed. Beautiful and breathtaking barn, property, and lake. Everything was well maintained, in working condition, and spotlessly cleaned. This was our second visit as a group and we'll be coming back again. We just love it! Thank you for your hospitality and great customer service.

Perfect for a long-weekend getaway!

  • 4 of 5
Even if the weather had been terrible (which is was not - nothing but warm sunshine and mild evenings for our 5-day stay), this place could not have been a better setting for our annual couples' weekend. There was so much space inside the barn, not once did it feel cramped with the 12 of us inside, along with a 150lb. dog. The look and feel of the barn and the outdoor spaces were very much appreciated.

When we arrived, the space was very clean. The caretakers did a nice job showing us around, showing us how things worked (this was critical for the word-burning sauna and hot tub), and explaining the different places both on and off the property we could enjoy. Check-in and check-out were both very easy.

The place was very beautiful and our group loved the architecture. The beds were very comfortable with nice, clean bedding; bathrooms were clean and spacious, with plenty of towels and bath tissue, etc.; the dishes were plentiful (though the metal causes some concern for use with the microwave); the outdoor spaces were absolutely incredible (and the light, but constant, breeze did a great job keeping the bugs away); and the place was well-stocked with firewood. There some areas could use some updating (the slow oven and some of the burners on the grill refused to work). Additionally, our group found the pantry (spices and coffee filters, especially) to be lacking, and there was no chest freezer as indicated on the website.

Overall, we are all looking forward to returning to the Barn in the future, and highly recommend this as a vacation destination.

A Great Property for a Memorable Group Gathering!

  • 5 of 5
The Barn is an ideal setting for any group gathering, whether it is a family reunion, wedding, or corporate retreat. We rented it the weekend after my daughter’s wedding so the families could spend time getting and get to know each other, a group of about 18 friends & family. There are so many areas to gather and things to do that our group was able to be all together as one in the great room/kitchen area or on the large deck for meals and other activities, or split up in one of the many gathering areas. It was a pleasure to cook in the fully equip kitchen, which was large enough for several cooks, and part of the great room so you were never away from the fun! The property has so much to offer, regardless of the weather, there was always something to do. It was sunny and warm during most of our visit so we all spent much of our time walking on the beach, relaxing in the hot tub and sauna, playing football and Frisbee on the large grassy back yard, and enjoying cocktails on the huge L-shape deck as we watched sunsets over the lake, and the twinkling of Duluth harbor lights into the evening. During a brief rain one afternoon, there was a group watching movies on the comfortable sofa in front of a large screen TV, some playing table tennis in the game room, and others spent time in front of the cozy fireplace; visiting, playing games, reading books and napping. The bedrooms were spacious with lots of windows, and the beds were comfortable with nice linens and comforters. The design of the bathrooms are a great use of space with the showers and wash areas separate from the toilet, very efficient for a large group. I am so glad we found this property, it will enhance the memory of the wonderful wedding weekend!

2nd time to the barn

  • 5 of 5
This was our second time to the barn and once again, we had a blast. We went with 4 families total and it is the perfect spot for this size of group. The accomodations are wonderful and unique - everything you could want is there. We often are amazed that the owners would let other people rent out such a fabulous place - not only is the house magnificent, but the property and the view of the lake is spectacular. We had teenagers with us and this is one of their favorite vacations of the year. We hiked, skied, hot tubed, played games, worked on puzzles, and cooked meals together. Could not have asked for a better 3 days. Special thanks to the owners for letting other people share this gift.

Best Christmas Ever!

  • 5 of 5
Our family stayed at the barn the week of Christmas. We had a WONDERFUL time at the barn!! Everyone in the family just raved about how fantastic it was. My son in law told me repeatedly it was the best idea I ever had. We all want to come back in the future. It was a little dicey getting there, we arrived right at the end of a 24” snow fall, (after another 24” the day before). We were in close contact with the caretakers, they were extremely helpful, making sure the county road had been plowed first, then re-routing us so we could avoid a big hill just before the driveway. We arrived with no problems.

The barn was very homey and comfortable, with more amenities than you would expect. This was the first time our family ever spent Christmas away from home and it was the best one we ever had. Thank you so much for your hospitality!
