My husband and I are in Florida and our sons live in Texas but we are always planning a 'family' vacation to Green Turtle!
We built our home in Green Turtle and the fun began. Our children are grown now but their love of Green Turtle continues. Our oldest son chose Green Turtle for his wedding this summer (2009).
Absolutely peaceful and relaxing. Each day is an adventure. You can choose to go fishing, snorkeling, spear lobster or sit on the porch and read a book and look at the water. The water is gorgeous with so many shades of color.
We travel annually to beach locations over the December holiday and this one is our favorite! The home has every accommodation and comfort imaginable. From the comfort of the mattress, the thread count of the sheets to the fully stocked kitchen, screened porch and wonderful sound system, it was truly the most beautiful and comfortable vacation we've had in over 20 years. Watching the sun rise from the screened porch, beach fishing, walking on the beach and swimming in the beautiful ocean were some of our highlights. Thanks to Ruth, the home is impeccable! and Austin, not only met us at the dock and drove us to the home and took us back upon departure, but was incredibly helpful in giving us a tour of the island and insuring our every need was met. The island is truly a piece of paradise. We can't wait to return!
Bennett house was fantastic and my family of 5 had a wonderful time. The owner was super accommodating and the on island caretaker Austin truly took care of us during our stay.
The house itself was remarkably clean and well appointed. The pictures truly don't do it justice. We've stayed in a lot of rental houses in a number of different locations and Bennett House is at the top of the list. Unlike some rental units, all of the amenities listed, including the outdoor speakers, actually worked as advertised. It's obvious that the owners take a great deal of pride in maintaining and upgrading this property.
There is no pool onsite per se, which concerned me a bit with our 5 year old waterbug, but it was no problem. The beach is great and the Leeward Yacht Club and their awesome pool is about a 2 minute ride away.
I intend to be back and wouldn't hesitate to recommend this property and the people that run it to my friends and family.
Had another glorious time on Green Turtle Cay. Although we have tried a few other places, our favorite is the Bennett House. A cup of coffee on the back porch at sunrise is quite possibly the most beautiful place on earth! The reef in front of the house makes for many fond memories. The house is quite comfortable for the six of us. It is centrally located between town and the club. The caretaker was very attentive to our every need. He even prepared starfish for us to take home!! All in all, we will be back!!!
I have been going to this island on and off for the past 14 years and this was my first time staying at this property. The island is the perfect get away - nothing like sunshine, sand, and turquoise water to calm the soul! I like its simplicity, laid back nature, and the residents are very welcoming.
With regard to the property, first the positives: the owner was very responsive and accommodating; the location is perfect as it is centrally located (a short golf cart ride to town), secluded, and right on the water; the natural foliage surrounding the house is well maintained; the caretaker met us at the ferry dock as promised and transported our luggage to the house, took them back to the dock on departure, and waited with us until the ferry arrived to make sure all was well; the rented golf cart was at the dock upon arrival as arranged by the owner; 'lots of beach towels, bathroom towels, linens, and kitchen stuff; having use of a washer and dryer was great!
Now the not so positives: the house was smaller than anticipated (I would say it is more of a cottage than a house) and feels dated; while it does indeed have beds to sleep 6 it is best suited to 1 or 2 adults travelling with children; the upstairs bathroom is extremely small; the verendah is screened in, however, the bugs get in through the space between the floor boards as there is no screen below the floor boards (if mosquitoes and noseeums love you, be forewarned); there were a number of power outages during our stay, note that the house doesn't have a generator; a 'welcome package' would have been a nice touch.
When I next return to the island this property will not be my first choice, but I won't rule it out completely - the view of the ocean from the house is fantastic.
By far, our trip to Green Turtle Cay was absolutely the best vacation we have ever taken. To begin our trip we flew Airgate Aviation out of New Smryna Beach, Florida and to quote my 12 year old " I don't ever want to take a big plane again". It was great and we were treated like VIP's. Once arriving in Treasure Cay we were unloaded and on the ferry to Green Turtle in less than 45 minutes. The caretaker for Bennett House, Austin, met us at Benson Dock with our Golf Cart. Immediately our adventure began with the kids getting to see a huge tub full of baby sea turtles that were going to be released later that day. The house was more than we could have expected. Everything you need is available to make your stay like home.Austin took us for a quick tour of New Plymouth and showed us all the necessary stops. While we were gone, our kids ages 20, 14 and 12, had already gotten out their snorkeling gear and headed to the water. The snorkeling behind the house was amazing. During the week we saw many different species including a barracuda and eel. We rented a boat from Donnie's Boat rentals and he was more than accommodating. He also took us to Hope Town for a day trip which included many stops along the way and lunch. It was a beautiful day!! We used the kitchen at the house for most meals but we did eat out on the island at Green Turtle Club and Harvey's. We used our boat and took day trips to No Name Cay,Lincoln's Cove and Treasure Cay. At No Name we played with the pigs and swam in a deserted area where the water was a blue as anyone could possibly imagine. At Lincoln's Cove we swam with Sting Rays and Nurse Sharks. Everywhere we went we met the most interesting and friendly people. Austin took us out and spent an afternoon chasing sea turtles. He knows the best spots!! I can't even begin to cover everything we did and all the memories we made. Wanda.....your home is amazing and we thank you so much for sharing with us. Also a shout out to Austin, he is a huge help and a great friend that we hope to see again. I am an educator and my youngest child wanted us to research how I could get a job in the Abaco's. We will definitely be back!!! My suggestion for anyone traveling to GTC is to pack very little clothing and lots of food, sun screen and bug spray. We even packed frozen meat in a cooler which kept our food cost way down. You do not need many clothes....I promise we wore bathing suits and cover ups most all week.
It's really hard to try to find something to write that hasn't already been said. "Slice of Heaven"??.....ABSOLUTELY!!! For anyone looking for peace and relaxation, this is it. There are many fine features of the house but my favorite was the screened porch. We began each day with coffee on the porch, listening to the surf, then went out for a full day of snorkeling, swimming, and fishing. After evenings out dancing to the music of the Gully Roosters, we returned to the porch for a nightcap and to enjoy the peaceful sound of the surf before bed. Another great thing about the house is the mid island location. It is close to town and equally close to the scenic points and beaches on the north end of the island. There is great snorkeling on the beach in front of the house. The home is lovely and well stocked. The beds are very comfortable. The linens are new and are nice quality. Bath and beach towels are large and plush. The owners have not overlooked anything. In addition to the lovely rocking chairs on the deck and the wonderful hammock on the beach, there are folding beach chairs, canopies for beach shade, fishing poles, floats, coolers, everything you need for a great day at the beach.
Although we met many wonderful people on the island, I could not end this review without mentioning the caretaker, Austin and the homeowner, Wanda.
We arrived in a terrible thunderstorm and could not get our cart. The caretaker, Austin loaded us and our luggage into his truck and got us safely to the house and out of the storm, then made sure that someone would bring our cart to us. He checked on us during the week to make sure that we had everything we needed and also made some great recommendations on restaurants, specials, fresh conch, etc. He even brought us some lovely starfish to take home with us as a souvenir. He really was a pleasure to meet.
Wanda, the owner was great! In addition to reserving our cart for us, she provided us with so much helpful info that made our stay a perfect one (too much to list). THANK YOU WANDA FOR ALL YOUR RECOMMENDATIONS AND TIPS . Your moneysaving ideas for bringing food were invaluable. Your recommendations on the trips with Lincoln and Brendal were great. We booked trips with both of them and had a blast on each trip. THE BIGGEST THANKYOU GOES FOR SHARING YOUR LOVELY HOME WITH US ..... IT WAS THE BEST VACATION WE HAVE EVER HAD!!! GREEN TURTLE CAY IS A VERY SPECIAL PLACE WITH VERY SPECIAL PEOPLE!!
You can snorkel and/or fish out the back door! Right behind the house are some of the prettiest coral reefs in the world. We have a hammock on the beach for relaxing.
