Podere Vigliano, a 275 year old farmhouse, beautifully restored in the old style is situated on 10 acres in the Umbrian countryside bordering Tuscany.

Enter the cypress lined driveway to the enchanting private grounds. Walk among the olive groves, vineyard, fruit trees, oak forest, and manicured gardens, or relax by the private swimming pool, in an easy chair under the pergola sipping wine, and enjoying the peaceful views.

We're back! Absolutely amazing! We truly cannot wait to plan our next trip. I'm sure I gained 10 pounds, we ate like you wouldn't believe.....Our most favorite dish in all of Italy was Milena's lasagna...oh my gosh! This was a trip of a lifetime. Thank you so much, I can't believe this opportunity just landed in my lap like that!!

I came to Italy alone, a single woman, and fell in love with Umbria and especially Podere Vigliano. Without knowing a word of Italian I made this my home and embarked on the amazingly fun adventure of restoring this 275 year old farmhouse in the old way. Everything about Italy and Umbria has been transformative. The landscape is magnificent, but most of all the Italian people exude the beauty, warmth, and pace of the land.

When I first came to Umbria after the end of my long marriage I felt renewed and my spirit so free that it seemed I could do and be anything in Italy. Soon after, my former husband passed away and my responsibilities to my children, still in high school, made it so I wasn't able to spend as much time here. A house needs to be lived in so I started sharing my home with guests so that they too could experience the beauty and love I have here as well. This way I feel always connected to my home in Italy.

Italy brings out the romance in everyone, and after 12 years of being on my own, my American boyfriend, Greg, flew over from California to get down on one knee and propose marriage on my terrace. I accepted! So many times I dreamt of love on that terrace under the night sky looking up at the lights of Monteleone, drinking local sangiovese wine. It was perfect that his declaration of love was on the very terrace where my dreams soared and my heart opened. Now I have a partner to share in this beautiful life here and in California. Between the two of us we have four lovely young adult children, my two, Steve and Katie; and his two, Kendall and Courtney.

I steal away to Italy as often and long as possible. I have lead many customized tours and love to explore the countryside and bring my discoveries to others. I am an avid cyclist, triathlete, and outdoor enthusiast who believes anything you do outside is always best. Hence, life in the Italian countryside suits me perfectly.

Susan Condon-Crakow purchased this farmhouse in 2000

I bought Podere Vigliano for its unique beauty, both the home and the land. I wanted to be in the countryside where my neighbors are Italian farmers living as they always have.

You will have access to my local Italian friends for cooking at the farmhouse, preparing pizza in my outdoor pizza oven and intimate cooking classes in their homes. At the town cafe and restaurant/wine bar you will be immediately welcomed when you tell them you are staying at my house. Our town is not on the tourist map and you will feel like you are living the Italian life.

A MOST MEMORABLE WEEK

  • 5 of 5
My family of four, including my two adult daughters, spent a glorious week at this beautiful villa. We were also joined by my sister-in-law and 2 others for some wonderful family time. The villa was clean, had everything we needed and was so relaxing after spending a bustling 10 days touring Paris and Rome. The location was ideal for exploring Umbria and using it as a base to explore the area.It was difficult to tear ourselves away from this gorgeous, peaceful setting, to do several day trips in the area. Sue has gone out of her way to share tons of information on the surrounding areas, day trips she recommends, along with restaurant recommendations all put together in a fantastic book, complete with maps, as well. The biggest problem we had, was deciding what to see in the week we were there. Interspersing that with relaxing at the villa at the beautiful pool, with book in hand and listening to the church bells ring out in Monteleone, was priceless. We arranged for Alessandro, a local chef and restaurant owner in the area, to come to the villa to give us Italian cooking lessons. He brought everything needed to create the most delicious meals, complete with wine and dessert. He is a wonderful chef, teacher and overall the most personable soul ever. By the end of the second night, it was like he was part of our family.....I wanted to marry him off to one of my daughters!!
We will cherish the memories made during this fantastic week at Podere Vigliano and hope to return sometime in the future:)
Thanks for everything Sue!!

A FAMILY CELEBRATION

  • 5 of 5
Our stay at Podere Vigliano was nothing short of fantastic. There were no aspects of the website description or photos that disappointed. We made the journey from Australia and New Zealand, we were a family of 8 adults and two 1year olds - my husband, four daughters, two sons-in-law and two grandsons - all my family under the one roof - it was a dream come true, all together to celebrate my 60th. There was plenty of room for all of us to have our own space, but enjoy the many meals and 'happy hours' at the various spots around the house. The outside BBQ was great with delightful views of the countryside and the lovely little village on the hill. We had two Pizza Nights using the pizza oven - and one fantastic night on my birthday that was catered by Milena (lady who looks after the house), and a menu that we could not do justice.
Susan not only has a thick folder with suggestions for restaurants, wines, tours, and things to do, but made a couple of phone calls to ensure all was to our satisfaction.
This property was everything I imagined, and more, I would definitely recommend this villa to family and friends, in fact I have already done so, so maybe another visit in the future from Australia.
The location is great, we had two cars that took us on day trips around the country and made train trips to Rome and Florence.
A pity it is all over, but the memories are precious.

HEAVEN ON EARTH

  • 5 of 5
My family and friends spent one week at Podere Vigliano. It was nothing short of magical. The pictures do not do it justice; you must simply see this beautiful home in person. And when I say "home", you truly feel at "home". I have stayed at many vacation rentals and that is what they typically feel like, a "rental". At Podere Vigliano you feel at home! The only downside is at the end of your stay, you have to leave.

We spent our first 3 nights in Rome which was wonderful, but Umbria and Podere Vigliano were the highlights of our trip. The countryside was breathtaking. All of the local people were incredibly friendly and helpful, despite the language barrier. The Coop market was great (visit our friend at the deli counter for the BEST Italian meats)! Easy train to Florence. Drive/train to Cinque Terre. Wonderful drive to Siena and Assisi. And, of course, Monteleone d' Orvieto ... what an unforgettable place.

The food was incredible everywhere we went. But the best was the cooking class with Falco and Valeria. An unforgettable evening with two very special people. Cannot recommend this enough. Also, our last night there, Grato's daughter, Ilena (?) and Milena came to Podere Vigliano and fixed us the most incredible meal of appetizers and the most delicious pizza, baked in the 250 year old farmhouse built-in pizza oven! This was a wonderful evening with two special ladies who are excellent cooks. It is very likely that we will never find pizza like that again ... until our next trip to Podere Vigliano. Thank you, Ladies, for making our last night there so memorable!

We cannot wait to return to Podere Vigliano. Whether you want to relax and enjoy the house, the pool, the views, the grounds, or you want to venture out to explore the many possible day trips ... it is truly living like an Italian, if only for a short time!

Ciao!

BEST VACATION EVER

  • 5 of 5
Our family includes a sixteen year old girl and an eighteen year old boy which makes finding a vacation spot that would please everyone very challenging. Podere Vigliano turned out to be the perfect place. The farmhouse has a beautiful functional swimming pool, great accomodations and the perfect location. The view from the pool is a spectacular one of the hilltop town of Monteleone.
We followed the owner Sue's recommendation and toured the surrounding countryside every other day (although it was difficult to leave such an idyllic place). We visited David in Florence, shopped the market in Chulsi, took in a jazz concert in Perugia, attended the "Lovefest in Arezzo, toured the catahedrals in Assisi and enjoyed superb repasts in Fabro, Citta della Pieve, and Orvieto.
Back at the farmhouse, we relaxed poolside, rode mountain bikes, picked zucchini, eggplants, lettuce and spices and along with fresh ingredients from the local markets, cooked some great meals. One night we were treated to a local gourmet feast prepared by Melina, a local cook who came over and personally prepared a home made meal consisting of six appetizers, lasagna, assorted meats and tiramisu for dessert. Delizioso! Accompanying the meal was a delicious wine that my son and I selcected from our personal tour of a nearby winery.
Podere Vigliano and the Tuscany and Umbria area truly exceeded our expectations. We will never forget the endless fields of sunflowers and breathtaking hillside cities.

A BIT OF PARADISE

  • 5 of 5
My family spent a glorious month at Podere Vigliano. We have been back a few weeks now, and love to play "remember when we were . . . " and we all get a little dreamy about Podere Vigliano. We talk about the pool, and the buzzing of the bees in the trees. We talk about the quiet and the fireflies. We talk about the smell of flowers in the air and high blue sky. The location is just what we wanted -- far away from any bustle, but a short trip to a green grocer, a supermarket, and the wine store. The kitchen is perfectly stocked and ready for action. Our biggest dilemma every morning was at which idyllic outdoor space to breakfast. The bedrooms are perfectly appointed with a rustic yet elegant simplicity. The groundskeeper, Grato, keeps the grounds looking absolutely gorgeous and yet incredibly inviting. We took the owner's advice and had Milena cook us a fabulous meal. It was, no question, the best meal we had in Italy. There are binders of delightful daytrips and local restaurants for days when we could tear ourselves away from the farmhouse. It was a magical month we will never forget.

OUR FIRST TRIP TO ITALY WAS MAGICAL....

  • 5 of 5
Our first trip to Italy was magical, we rented Podere Vigliano for 10 days, and we were just “wowed” by the beautiful farmhouse, the well manicure grounds and spectacular pool. The photos did not do justice on how beautiful the property truly is. We would spend one day exploring the different towns in Umbria or Tuscany. (Susan, the owner, had wonderful guide books, day trips itineraries and maps.) Then we would spend one day just hanging out at the farmhouse. Going to the local markets to pick out fresh ingredients to cook a fabulous meal but again Susan, can recommend a friend who will cook an authentic meal for you, which we did. It was the best homemade Italian dinner, and there were so much leftover that we had enough for the next day. Susan told us that we would get more out of the trip in the country by doing less. During the whole trip we kept saying “Less is more”. She was absolutely right. The house is so comfortable that you feel that it’s your home. We loved just sitting by the pool, having cocktails, listening to music, reading a book and just looking up to the wall city of Monteleone d’Orvieto. We felt that staying at the farmhouse, gave us a greater appreciation for the Italian culture and language. We were on our own schedule, doing less was more and it was a very memorable vacation. We will be back!
