Drive 8 minutes on well-paved roads through eucalyptus forests and open pastures to arrive at our 'öhia-forested mauka retreat. This new lodge is located on a former Hawaiian homestead from 20's. Well known for its old growth 'öhia, this area was once a source of koa for canoes. This new lodge is solar-powered with a generator back-up and situated at the 2400 ft elevation near the forest edge. It offers cool mountain breezes, privacy, and a large open yard. A great room contains the living room, dining room and kitchen which is joined on either end with a bedroom, each with its own bathroom and large lanai. A 40 minute drive will take you to either beautiful Waimea or historic Hilo. If the weather is rainy or cloudy, you are 1 hour away from the top-rated Hapuna Beach. Closer by you will find western-style Honoka'a town, Laupahoehoe Point, The Laupahoehoe Train Museum, and the quaint 50's restaurant. Enjoy the private peacefulness and the native flora and fauna. It will be an adventure! Take a guided hike into the forest and learn its history.

Your hosts have lived next door to this property for 40 years. They are looking forward to sharing this beautiful property with you. Don is a builder and Susan is a teacher at a Hawaiian charter school. Don is available to guide nature hikes into the native forest.
The Owner purchased this house in 2008
Dear Susan, dear Don
we've enjoyed the stay in your cosy house soooooo much! everything was clean and made with love!! we thank you for your hospitality! what a pity we had to leave after four days! we highly recommend this place to people who look for privacy, adventure, nature, startrails, ....simply: a place to feel at home!
we will never forget these days!
The lodge was tastefully equipped, large, clean and well maintained. A beautiful place in beautiful nature, absolutely recommendable.
I stayed this beautiful private house with my mom. When we first got there in the evening, it was a little chilly and different from my expectation (I was expecting a nice warm Hawaiian house). But we loved the place soon after. When my mom woke up in the middle of the first night, stars were amazingly close and beautiful that she thought it was lightening bugs. The house was very private and has everything: nice view, bbq grill outside, lanai, huge liviing space, nice kitchen setting, ipod player connected to speakers... Susan (the owner wife) provided us anything we need for the house to try to accommodate our needs. It was so nice of her. Don (the owner hus) took us to a forest tour. It was great!! I loved the place where used to be an old Hawaiian village. I and my mom felt the sacred spiritual energy there. We will definitely come back to this place! Susan and Don, thank you so much for the great stay :)
Hello all. I spent 7 days at this incredible retreat on the mountain. I was beautiful. At night, as I climbed the hill in the dark, I wondered what I would find at the top (all paved but the very end). Driving up to this house was so inviting. Lights on...mostly windows...and finding the peaceful kitchen, living room, and the bedrooms was amazing. So warm and toasty, all the comforts of home...and you can't wait to use the fully equipped kitchen! Just a short jaunt to highway 19 and close to everything you need. Enjoy the lanai to cook out on, and sit to watch the ocean every morning while listening to the birds...this place is somewhere you will not want to leave! But, what is more, the hosts, Don and Susan, cannot make you feel more like family. They are incredible. See you next year Don and Susan!! Thank you so much for allowing us this pleasure.
This was our first time at Hawaii, and we couldn't imagine having stayed in a better place! Everything was exactly the way we imagined (and what we expected from the website and other people's comments). Susan and Don's place was a total treat for our family of five (2 adults and 3 children): private, quiet, spacious, clean, charming and cozy. Don and Susan put a lot of work and love into the place, and it shows. Their eye for detail, their hospitality and their genuine care made our time at the lodge truly special.
Though the property is a little ways to the popular beaches and other tourist attractions (between 50 and 90 minutes), the place is totally worth it. Even our kids (7, 11 and 13), who usually don't like spending a lot of time in the car, thought so. If one has a place to come back to that feels like home, it doesn't matter how long it takes to get there. We only wished we had had more time to spend at the house and in the vicinity. The Waipio Valley is supposed to be totally beautiful -- the more reason to come back soon! Mahalo, Susan and Don!
I spent three wonderful days at Don and Sue Barton’s lovely B&B in mid-November. I love the design of the place; two completely private suites connected by a large common room with kitchen, dining and living. The common space runs north and south with all glass on the eastern and western walls, capturing enough solar gain to heat the house, even on an overcast day.
This is a totally off the grid house, powered by solar panels with a backup generator hidden down in a gulch, providing all the electricity one could ever need. Temperature is controlled by opening and closing windows and doors to vent the main room. One immediately becomes in tune with the environment in this house, which provides an experience of being grounded to and with nature.
This is an incredible place for a personal retreat, to read, write and think. One can retire to their personal suite and have total privacy with a view; beautiful pastureland and forest down to the expansive blue ocean on one side and an intimate view of ohia forest gulch on the other. The ocean side is dramatic, but I prefer the mountain side for its intimacy.
The owners do not live in this building. They have a private house a five minute walk up the mountain. This dramatically increases the privacy. In addition, each suite has a high wainscoting on the interior wall, which directs one’s attention to the view when in the suite, adding to the privacy.
Everything is brand new, clean and very comfortable. We had a dinner party for eight friends and children. The common room worked perfectly, with a large dining table and stools around a large center island where the food was available for everyone. There was plenty of space for the kids to play in the same room without being underfoot.
The owners took us on a three hour guided tour of the forest. They have lived on the property for over 30 years. Don knows every tree. I really look forward to returning to this house. Don is clearing a nature hike directly above the house into a beautiful gulch. I can’t wait to take that hike.
One morning, while writing in my suite, I noticed more than a dozen wild turkeys slowly grazing up the pastureland outside my window, not more than twenty yards away. I think that was the moment my cares melted away. Later that night I walked the pasture in the half moonlight, overlooking the ocean, with the sound of multiple whispers as the various canopies caught the light breeze. Ethereal bliss.
