SANCTUARY COTTAGE: A PRIVATE RETREAT WITH SUMPTUOUS GARDENS

Carmel Valley Cottage Rental Photos and Description

Cottage, 1 Bedroom, 1 Bath, (Sleeps 1-2)

The Sanctuary Cottage is located in the heart of Carmel Valley Village. It resides on a seven acre property with established landscaping and old growth Live & Valley Oaks. Many fine restaurants are located in the village; as well as several renown wine tasting rooms. All of them are located within easy walking distance from the cottage. About half of the property is landscaped in some form and there are many paths to explore and much bird life to observe and enjoy. The large Koi pond in front of the cottage has an enchanting and sonorous waterfall to lull you to sleep or remind you of that special mountain place. Several benches are located on the property and offer varied views of the valley, pond, pool, and gardens. Bring binoculars for an up close look at the seasonal birdlife that enjoy this special environment.

The cottage relies on electric baseboard heaters, double paned wood windows, and floor and ceiling insulation to keep it's guests comfortable. The property generates it's own electricity with a PV system. The slate floors in the bathroom are electrically heated as well a the towel rack. A solar tube provides bathroom light during daylight hours and the single vanity has an enclosed hamper. Screened opening windows allow for ventilation and the sounds of birds and the waterfall to enter the cottage. The bay window in the bedroom has a cushion for sitting, reading, and enjoying the pond views. Shades operate in two directions for complete privacy, while allowing natural light into the tranquil and romantic room. Every attempt has been made to insure the guests comfort during their stay. The kitchen is fully equipped with modern conveniences to allow your creative energies to flow.

The cottage is very unique, cozy, comfortable, and peaceful. You may not want to venture far from this abode or you may wish to linger here in the evenings after a busy day of sightseeing, hiking, or attending the many special events that take place around the Monterey Peninsula. We hope you will want to return again to this tranquil setting in the future and will do are utmost to insure your stay is pleasurable.

About Beverly Sigourney, Ed Sigourney

Beverly & Ed have been lifelong residents of the Monterey Peninsula. We are stewards of the land we live on and feel blessed to inhabit this part of the world. We endeavor to make our guests feel at home and cared for without intruding into their space. We have put considerable time, effort and savings into making our beloved home what it is today. We want to share this treasure with others who have a love for nature and who appreciate the special environment we have to offer.

Beverly Sigourney, Ed Sigourney purchased this cottage in 1988

Why Beverly Sigourney, Ed Sigourney chose Carmel Valley

This property was originally purchased by Ed's parents, John & Mary, in the early 1950's, when this was a sleepy rural community. Things have changed considerably since then, but much of the charm remains. We love the climate, fertile soil, wildlife, trees, and mountain view that this place offers. The cottage is not pretentious but rather carefully recreated in a country style that lends itself to relaxing and taking time to smell the abundant flowers and observe the nature that resides here. We enjoy sunshine in the summer months when Carmel is often fogbound. We are close to wonderful natural attractions, while having numerous shopping, hiking, sports, entertainment, and dining opportunities within a short drive.

What makes this cottage unique

The main attractions in our minds, besides the cottage itself, are the surrounding garden spaces. We built the Koi pond in 2003-4 and it has 'completed' the garden for us. We enjoy spending time around it each day. Each season offers something new to see. In the winter the pond is free of lily pads and flowers and offers great reflections and wind patterns through the rock islands; in summer it is covered with lily pads and various flowers. Blooming bulbs (bearded iris, tuber roses,'naked ladies', narcissus), roses, California poppies and lupine, columbine, deciduous Valley oaks, liquid amber trees, Japanese Maples, fruit trees, etc., all have their time in the garden. The cottage is located in the heart of the garden. The pool is wonderful in the summer months (June-Aug.) and is heated with a solar blanket and sanitized with a new ozone treatment that precludes the use of chlorine. The cottage is unique and not anything like a hotel/motel experience. We welcome you to a peaceful setting, to relax and unwind from your normal cares and concerns.

This amazing place is a tranquil paradise. You would never know that restaurants and shops are in walking distance. The hosts have prepared the cottage with everything you might ever need. Loved waking up looking at the Monet like pond every morning. We are already scheduled to return.

Beautiful property, wonderful hosts

  • 5 of 5
This is a great property. Very large and lush grounds with bountiful edible gardens. Awesome pool with a diving board. Beautiful cottage with full kitchen and bathroom. Wonderful hosts. What more could you ask for? There's very little reason to leave the property!

Carmel Valley village is a short walk away for shops, restaurants and wine tasting. Love how the tasting rooms are all in town vs having to drive around like in Napa or Sonoma. Good bike rides nearby. Perfect weekend getaway. We hope to return!

Exceptional vacation retreat

  • 5 of 5
From the moment we inquired about this property, Beverly and Ed made it clear they had a very sepcial treat in store for us. We know Carmel Valley well, and this property exceeded expectations. Beautiful, bucolic, relaxing, and the accomodations were exceptionally clean and comfortable. Every effort has been made for a memorable stay, and the access to the pool was an added bonus. Walkable to great restaurants, shops and wine tasting, and the views made it hard to leave the property! We have done a lot of VRBO, and have pretty particular tastes for properties that combine good beds, kitchen and bathroom amenities, and a quality experience. This place does not disappoint! We will return.

Hidden Oasis Next to Carmel Valley Village

  • 5 of 5
Wow! That was our reaction as we entered the gate to Ed’s and Beverly’s private Shangri-La. This is a very special property in Carmel Valley that has been in Ed’s family for decades. Over their years together, he and Beverly have created an amazing 7-acre oasis, which they work tirelessly to protect and maintain.

The property lies in the valley nestled under huge redwoods and twisted oaks. The colorful gardens and stone pathways center around a huge koi pond brimming with water lilies. The setting is reminiscent of a Monet painting. There is a pool and outdoor fireplace on the property and several sitting areas where you can relax, read and take in the views.

The charming guest cottage is next to the primary residence. It has been completely renovated and includes huge picture windows that look out onto the pond, a fully stocked kitchen, and a spa bathroom with heated floors. Guests are treated to a loaf of artisan bread and Beverly’s homemade jam, as well as fresh flowers from the garden. The property is a short 5-minute walk to Carmel Valley Village where you’ll find exceptional restaurants and over 20 wineries.

Ed and Beverly are wonderful hosts who truly love sharing their amazing property with their guests. You won’t find another place like this in Carmel Valley. We hated to leave and are already planning our next visit.

Peaceful, Welcoming, Serene and EV Friendly!

  • 5 of 5
I've been driving down from Palo Alto to Monterey for the Jazz Fest every year for the past nine years. I started by staying in hotels in Monterey, migrated south to B&Bs in Carmel, and then east to inns in the Carmel Highlands. I always found myself drawn to Carmel Valley, with its bucolic setting, unpretentious restaurants, and down-to-earth locals.

This year, I got a purely electric car--a Tesla Model S--and had to come up with a new game-plan, since it needs to be plugged in overnight. The only hotel I could find with a charger was in downtown Monterey, which I didn't want to go back to. So I started searching on VRBO for rentals in Carmel Valley and quickly spotted a gorgeous property in an idyllic setting. But what really caught my eye was the humongous solar panel. I figured these folks have gotta be EV-friendly.

When I got hold of Beverly on the phone (she returned my call promptly), I said, "You've got a wonderful place and I would love to rent it but I have a problem: I need to charge my car." She inquired, "What kind of car is it?" When I told her it was a Tesla, she got really excited. "Ed and I have been checking those out. They are gorgeous. You gotta come!" She continued, "We have got a 240V 50A outlet outside that we use for the welding machine. You can use that." In case you're wondering, it's a NEMA 6-50 outlet, and it worked like a charm.

Not only was the Tesla taken care off, but also my girlfriend and I! We had a wonderful stay and felt so blessed to be Ed's and Bev's guests. The cottage is a marvel. Beautifully done and royally appointed. The setting, with the pond, the fruit trees, and the mountains in the distance, is serene. There are great eateries within walking distance. And, when I found out that Ed was a car buff, I had to let him take the S for a spin---ask him and Bev for review if you visit---one of them had a huge Tesla grin. :)

So all in all, the place is terrific, and we strongly recommend it to anyone that wishes to have a stay in a beautiful and welcoming setting for a few days.

Beautiful property, wonderful location!

  • 5 of 5
My husband & I stayed at this beautiful cottage for 3 days to celebrate our anniversary. The pictures are exactly what the property & cabin look like. Nice, modern, comfortable with every amenity you could think of. The town of Carmel Valley is literally a 5 minute walk to some wonderful restaurants. We parked our car and walked to wine tasting rooms and dinner every night. Don't need to get in your car again after you arrive. There is a lovely pool available in the warm summer, early fall months that we enjoyed swimming in in the afternoons. Did go to Carmel one day and it is only a 20 minute drive. I would highly recommend this cottage and the hosts, Beverly and Ed could not have been nicer or more friendly!
