Cottage, 1 Bedroom, 1 Bath, (Sleeps 1-2)

The Sanctuary Cottage is located in the heart of Carmel Valley Village. It resides on a seven acre property with established landscaping and old growth Live & Valley Oaks. Many fine restaurants are located in the village; as well as several renown wine tasting rooms. All of them are located within easy walking distance from the cottage. About half of the property is landscaped in some form and there are many paths to explore and much bird life to observe and enjoy. The large Koi pond in front of the cottage has an enchanting and sonorous waterfall to lull you to sleep or remind you of that special mountain place. Several benches are located on the property and offer varied views of the valley, pond, pool, and gardens. Bring binoculars for an up close look at the seasonal birdlife that enjoy this special environment.

The cottage relies on electric baseboard heaters, double paned wood windows, and floor and ceiling insulation to keep it's guests comfortable. The property generates it's own electricity with a PV system. The slate floors in the bathroom are electrically heated as well a the towel rack. A solar tube provides bathroom light during daylight hours and the single vanity has an enclosed hamper. Screened opening windows allow for ventilation and the sounds of birds and the waterfall to enter the cottage. The bay window in the bedroom has a cushion for sitting, reading, and enjoying the pond views. Shades operate in two directions for complete privacy, while allowing natural light into the tranquil and romantic room. Every attempt has been made to insure the guests comfort during their stay. The kitchen is fully equipped with modern conveniences to allow your creative energies to flow.

The cottage is very unique, cozy, comfortable, and peaceful. You may not want to venture far from this abode or you may wish to linger here in the evenings after a busy day of sightseeing, hiking, or attending the many special events that take place around the Monterey Peninsula. We hope you will want to return again to this tranquil setting in the future and will do are utmost to insure your stay is pleasurable.

About The Owner

Beverly & Ed have been lifelong residents of the Monterey Peninsula. We are stewards of the land we live on and feel blessed to inhabit this part of the world. We endeavor to make our guests feel at home and cared for without intruding into their space. We have put considerable time, effort and savings into making our beloved home what it is today. We want to share this treasure with others who have a love for nature and who appreciate the special environment we have to offer.

The Owner purchased this cottage in 1988
Why The Owner chose Carmel Valley

This property was originally purchased by Ed's parents, John & Mary, in the early 1950's, when this was a sleepy rural community. Things have changed considerably since then, but much of the charm remains. We love the climate, fertile soil, wildlife, trees, and mountain view that this place offers. The cottage is not pretentious but rather carefully recreated in a country style that lends itself to relaxing and taking time to smell the abundant flowers and observe the nature that resides here. We enjoy sunshine in the summer months when Carmel is often fogbound. We are close to wonderful natural attractions, while having numerous shopping, hiking, sports, entertainment, and dining opportunities within a short drive.

What makes this cottage unique

The main attractions in our minds, besides the cottage itself, are the surrounding garden spaces. We built the Koi pond in 2003-4 and it has 'completed' the garden for us. We enjoy spending time around it each day. Each season offers something new to see. In the winter the pond is free of lily pads and flowers and offers great reflections and wind patterns through the rock islands; in summer it is covered with lily pads and various flowers. Blooming bulbs (bearded iris, tuber roses,'naked ladies', narcissus), roses, California poppies and lupine, columbine, deciduous Valley oaks, liquid amber trees, Japanese Maples, fruit trees, etc., all have their time in the garden. The cottage is located in the heart of the garden. The pool is wonderful in the summer months (June-Aug.) and is heated with a solar blanket and sanitized with a new ozone treatment that precludes the use of chlorine. The cottage is unique and not anything like a hotel/motel experience. We welcome you to a peaceful setting, to relax and unwind from your normal cares and concerns.

Husband and I stayed for our wedding anniversary. Usually do Carmel-By-The-Sea but opted for something different. We were VERY glad we did so. We cancelled ALL our reservations at the oceanfront community, opting instead to relax in the warmth and beauty of Carmel Valley, and specifically at Ed and Bev's beautiful property.

It's the little touches that create the experience. Freshly baked bread provided to us for breakfast, along with plum jam Bev jarred the previous season. Beautiful bouquets of roses and sweet pea's placed throughout the cottage, adding the scent of spring in the air. Swimming in the lovely pool (solar heated to a wonderful 86 degrees) and, of course, the gardens and pond which captivated us through our cottage windows.

The cottage itself is cozy and warm. Furnishings are beautiful, kitchen is fully stocked with every utensil you could possibly need. Remodeled a few years ago, it has the feeling of a real 'home away from home'
The bistro table on the porch provided us with a great place to have breakfast and watch the world go by.
The cottage is literally a stones throw away from several awesome restaurants (try the mushroom pizza with truffle oil at Corkscrew Cafe or the BLT at Lokal) and wineries (ran out of time to wine taste but we will be back to do so)

I'll end by saying that our family has been doing VRBO for a long while. I take my research seriously and this place far surpassed my expectations.

We really enjoyed our stay in Carmel Valley. This cottage was fully renovated a few years ago, complete with a full kitchen and spa-like bathroom. This house is walking distance from 20+ wine tasting rooms and restaurants in the village.

Beverly and Ed were very hospitable and bent over backwards to make us feel at home. We'll definitely be back.

Recently my girlfriend and I were lucky enough to call the Sanctuary Cottage home for 4 nights over the holidays. While within walking distance to the village the well appointed cottage and grounds are situated so that you feel removed from the world and wrapped in nature. Ed and Beverly have created a lovely place to relax, recoup, and take it easy.

A Little Slice of Heaven

My boyfriend and I stayed at this beautiful little oasis for several days around Christmas. My parents' place was swamped with various guests, and this was the perfect escape! Edward and Beverly are such warm, welcoming, and knowledgable hosts (they both grew up in Carmel Valley), and the cottage and property are about as beautiful as you can get. My boyfriend and I both work in Silicon Valley / San Francisco, and we couldn't have hoped for a nicer getaway and escape from the hubbub of the "city". The cottage itself is incredibly charming, with a fully equipped kitchen (where we made breakfast and tea every morning) and beautiful bathroom with radiant heating. If the spectacular views to the property (koi pond! meditation benches! hummingbirds! redwoods! orchards and rose gardens!) aren't enough, there's also full cable and iPod jacks. In short, this little place has everything you might want or need for a weekend escape or longer. Carmel Valley is a beautiful destination, with much more sun than its more famous neighbor, Carmel-by-the-Sea, and many a wine tasting room, fabulous restaurant, and scenic hike. If you want to go farther afield, the galleries of Carmel and the amazing beauty of Big Sur are just 20-40 minutes away. Really, we can't say enough wonderful things about this beautiful cottage, the amazing property, the lovely owners (including Bella and Jackson, the loving canine guardians of the property!), and the general experience of "getting away" in Carmel Valley. I heartily recommend you book your trip today!

Our recent weeklong stay at Sancturary Cottage was all that we had hoped for, and more. The cottage is lovely, quiet, and perfectly appointed, with luxurious amenities. The bed was wonderfully comfortable, and the heated floor in the bathroom divine. The gardens are lovely and serene, a lovely oasis for the mind, body, and spirit. Ed and Beverly have created a true sanctuary in the heart of Carmel Valley. We have been vacationing in the area for more than 25 years, and have already booked our next stay in this paradise, we can't wait to go back.
