Tawas Point is one of the most renowned areas for kite boarding in the U.S. Even if you don't board, it is impressive to see. While there take a few minutes to check out the historic light house. And if you're into birding, this area has some of the best trails for watching and seeing birds.
For those who like to hike, canoe, kayak and fish be sure to check out Lumberman's Monument, Iargo Springs and the dams along the Au Sable River.
Monument Road is also a great road for those who ride bikes - be ready for a long ride if you leave from the cabin because it is almost 20 miles there - or drive out there and leave from Lumberman's. Either way you'll be riding through national forest on less-traveled roads with great scenery. Motorcyclists will enjoy the ride out there and to surrounding areas such as Sand Lake and Round Lake. There are also plenty of nearby ORV trails for the off road enthusiasts.
For those fishermen, Au Gres is the location to charter from for walleye. Oscoda also has Lakers. But don't forget the fishing on Tawas Lake or pier fishing in Tawas at the mouth of the river or on the state dock.
The down town area has great shops to get those needed souvenirs from vacation. Ben Franklin is sure to capture the attention of many youngsters and adults as well. There is also a chocolate shop, coffee shops, ice creameries, gourmet food shop and on Saturday mornings there is the farmer's market. There are also several local grocery stores, including Neiman's and a Super Wal-Mart.
For the golfers, the Red Hawk Golf Course is a short drive and an attraction for many. Other local courses include Huron Breeze and Tawas Golf Course.
The Tawas Chamber of commerce is excellent at scheduling events each weekend of the summer so be sure to check out what's happening on the weekend you plan to be in town.
