extremely dangerous beach

My family rented this property in February. By the time we arrived, we were very tired, but my three children wanted to swim. We did not see the harm (we have stayed in PR before) and so we put on suits and went down the stairs through a gate to an empty beach. As my husband and I watched, we noticed the kids began to drift away from the shallow area. Soon we were shucking our shirts and diving in, at which point all 5 of us became swept in a rip tide. We nearly lost our nine year old. There are NO postings on this beach. But afterward two residents said "don't use that beach! I have seen too many people drown here." Thank goodness all of the kids are good swimmers but needless to say it was a nightmarish way to start a vacation. The owner, despite many emails and phone calls, despite knowing we have three children, never warned us to not swim there. <b>Use the state beach 1/2 mile away.</b>
Then the hot water heater broke. So we had no hot water all week. The building is run down and roosters crow all night from the barrio below. The bathrooms were dirty. The wind howled the whole time, like a moaning child at night.
Puerto Rico is a beautiful place, but I would not recommend this property.
Owner's Response: In response to the unfavorable comment from the renter from Mass. I would like to address a couple of items she mentioned..First , they came down from the states and were not familiar with the beach..They got there at dusk...People swim there everyday, as are all beaches in Puerto Rico, they are State owned not private.. They just happened to get there after a heavy rain and the tides and waves were large..Second, the apartment was cleaned by a cleaning service two days before they got there. The new water heater was installed by a licensed electrician and unfortunately, the wrong sized breaker was installed and all they needed to do was switch it back on, (which they did when they called ) it never was broken.. and, in 2+ years of renting, i have had not one complaint. And lastly, the comment was the unfortunate experience of one guest, not the experience of any other happy travelers who have stayed at our beachfront condo...
