Photos and Description of the New Orleans vacation house rental
House, 3 Bedrooms + 2 Convertible beds, 2.5 Baths, (Sleeps 6-10)

Come enjoy New Orleans like a local in MidCity, a favorite NOLA neighborhood located in what was known in the 19th century as the “back of town.” Two blocks from the streetcars on Canal Street and Carrollton, this home is just ten minutes from the French Quarter, the Fairgrounds, Bayou St. John, City Park, the famous cemeteries of New Orleans, and more.

This beautiful house was flooded during Katrina, but has been lovingly restored by its owners, who wanted to help make New Orleans whole again after the devastation of the storm. Outfitted for comfort and serenity, it is a welcome respite after wild abandon at Mardi Gras or Jazz Fest, French Quarter Festival, the VooDoo Experience or Essence Festival, and just exploring all the magical wonders this unique city has to offer.

PRIVATE HOT TUB! Clothing is optional as you enjoy the cozy round hot tub in our totally private courtyard. Whip up a delicious cocktail and have a bubbly soak, surrounded by lush tropical greenery gracing our new large deck in the back yard. You can go from watching the 'river of life' flow by from the front porch that overlooks the lively streets of New Orleans, to enjoying complete outdoor privacy in our tropical paradise in the back yard. And as you move from the front porch to the back yard you'll walk through the graceful rooms of this lovely 100-year-old house decorated in a colorful, eclectic style that lets you know you are in the fabulous and funky city of New Orleans. Nothing generic, suburban, or run-of-the-mill in this house, that's for sure!

When you're ready for some socializin', step around the corner to Finn McCool’s and have a beer, talk to the locals, meet some new people ... New Orleans folks are friendly! In the cool of the evening stroll over to Angelo Brocato’s on Carrollton Ave and delight in their wondrous pastries and Italian ice or gelato. Host a Sugar Bowl party in front of our 42' HD flat screen TV, then dance the night away to the Zydeco music at the Rock-N-Bowl, truly a NOLA experience. Or catch the streetcar on Canal and step right out onto Bourbon, Decatur or Frenchman Street for a night of festivities. For those in the know, Frenchman Street (in the Marigny) is the place to be for great live music. But MidCity has its share of live music going on every weekend too ... Banks St Bar & Grill, Chickie Wah Wah's (on Canal), and others.

Restaurants abound in MidCity and many are within an easy walk of three or four blocks. The Ruby Slipper (delicious breakfast and lunch), Mandina's (time-honored NOLA tradition), Mona's (Mediterranan fare and fabulous homemade pita bread), Juan's Flying Burrito (mmmm-mmmmm), Venezia (rumored to have been a Mafia hangout long ago), Wit's End (said to have hosted Brangelina once), Dosan's Noodle House, Five Happiness, and more. Rouse's grocery store is close by on Carrollton, and it is a New Orleans institution (great fried chicken, homemade Cajun sausage and boiled crawfish). So even if you're sans automobile, you'll be well-fed!

This house has three bedrooms, 2.5 baths, 14’ ceilings, original heart pine floors, a 6’ long claw foot bathtub in the master bath, new kitchen with granite countertops and stainless steel appliances, king-size four-poster bed, two queen beds, a daybed with pop-up trundle and a full-size sleeper sofa. It also features a large private deck/courtyard with a five-person hot tub. It’s perfect for a family getaway, a romantic honeymoon, a bachelor party, a reunion of old friends, a Festival experience … somehow magic happens in New Orleans and you will make memories to last a lifetime.

So come on down and experience The City That Care Forgot!

About Elizabeth Morcom

My husband and I purchased The House of Mirth in 2006, soon after Hurricane Katrina made her terrible mark on this historic and graceful old city. As a native of the Gulf Coast with many memories of New Orleans going back to my childhood, my heart was broken when I saw the complete devastation that the entire area suffered. We lived in Atlanta and from that far-away place I longed to help and be a part of the rebuilding of the city I love so much. When the opportunity came, we took the plunge and bought the gutted and damaged house. But her grace shone through the dulled and peeling paint, her foundation was strong, and all the beautiful cypress woodwork survived the rising waters.

It took us two solid years to bring the house to its present state, working in hot humid conditions with no electricity, no water at first, and no stores or restaurants open. It was a happy day when the Home Depot on Carrollton opened, and once the nearby grocery store got up and running, things felt a little more normal. With every trip down from Atlanta we saw New Orleans slowly come back, debris disappearing, houses being repaired, red lights working again, electricity back on.

We parked a small RV out front and that's where we stayed when we were down from Atlanta working. Many loving hands helped repair and renovate the house, including family and friends. When we got running water it was a joyous day, and when the electricity was restored, oh boy did we celebrate! That meant lights and fans and radios and electric tools to make our work a little easier.

So The House of Mirth is a labor of love and we hope you will enjoy her lovely amenities and imagine the many people who have lived within her walls over the past 100 years. I think they would approve of how she looks today and welcome visitors who come to discover the quirky, mysterious and delightful place that is New Orleans.

Great house, awesome neighborhood, and a friendly owner

Just finished a vacation with about 8 friends for 4 days at the House of Mirth and can't say enough good things about it. First, the owner was very professional and efficient handling the money side of things. We handled it through PayPal and had no problems. The house was in great condition. We very comfortably slept 8 people and could've handled more. This is not a flop house. The furnishings and details are very nice. There's a beautiful clawfoot tub in the master bath. The house is just around the corner from two great restaurants and a couple interesting bars, so we were able to get a taste of NOLA as soon as we got there. The house is a 100 yards from the trolley line, which takes you straight into downtown and the French Quarter. A cab ride to other main neighborhoods was barely $12 for 3 people. I felt very safe in the neighborhood at night. The backyard area was great for hanging out. It's got a functioning hot tub and plenty of seating. This is not a hot tub that's impossible to use. It was on and ready when we got there and very easy to use. The kitchen was great. We cooked a couple really good meals with no problem. I really don't have any complaints. Just an all around great experience.

The House of Mirth is an excellent place to stay in New Orleans. The house is as interesting and unique as its name - the colours are interesting, as well as the furniture, books, paintings, wall decor etc... We were all so pleasantly surprised - it's even better than its pictures! The location was convenient to the trolley, lovely and quiet with 2 restaurants very close by. The beds are super comfy and the kitchen well equipped - the house was also very spacious - would definitely stay there again.

This place was perfect for 7 girls...located close to a great restaurant (Ruby Slipper—brunch was fabulous) and fun bar (Finn McCools—late night fun atmosphere) and a few easy blocks to the trolley to get downtown for $1.25-$1.50 each, we loved it!! Additionally the house was beautiful, clean, and well-maintained and the hot tub worked perfectly! Thanks so much and hopefully we'll get back there someday!

We came to NOLA to celebrate Bucky's Great Adventure - Part Tre (Bob's 60th birthday). Eight of us bunked at the House of Mirth and had a ball. We had an easy time getting to the Jazz Fest as well as the French Quarter by riding the trolley which was only a few blocks away. The house was everything we had been told it would be. It was comfortable, welcoming and a great place to crash after a long day in the sun. The hot tub was especially nice at times. We would heartily recommend this house to anyone coming to NOLA. Loved it.

The pictures do not do this place justice! We were very impressed with the size and atmosphere of the house. It was clean and comfortable and we were able to fit 7 people easily. The porch out front is a great place to sit and watch the world go by, and for more privacy the back deck and hot tub are great places to hang out. Would definitely come back!
