About The Owner

I share my time between Granada and San Diego since discovering Granada in 2006....it took less than 24 hours once here to know that this is where I want to be 'whenever I can!' I love the life here and thoroughly enjoyed the renovation process of Casa Sonrisas. Upon entering the home 3 years ago, the potential was obvious but it was loaded with deferred maintenance and had many 'new additions' of the previous owners which did not quite fit. Especially fun was working around the challenges of the city's requirements for historical homes e.g. maintaining all existing adobe walls which in this home are 2 1/2 feet keeping it cool and breezy; exterior are all adobe and many interior walls as well.

The Owner purchased this house in 2007

Why The Owner chose Granada

The neighborhood and location of Casa Sonrisas. Residential and private yet close to everything. Granada captures the heart and this home carries on that spirit of happiness, warmth, ambiance, history....hence its name....House of Smiles. Casa Sonrisas has proven to be what my family hoped for...a fun home in which to gather, play and relax.

What makes this house unique

Location (home sits on southeast corner of la Libertad and el Martirio - 3 blocks east of the park toward the lake), neighborhood, saltwater pool, outdoor pizza oven, fresh herb garden, privacy, design of main living area which is conducive to a family/friend gathering, maid service, gardener, washer/dryer.

We have been to Nicaragua on several occasions.
Since 2010 we have had various family members, relatives and friends stay multiple times at Casa Sonrisas.
This desired destination keeps offering more each time, and the home owner has really perfected the quality of service she provides to her guests. Most recently I was in Granada in February of 2014 with a group of 5 visitors. This was my second stay at Casa Sonrisas and my expectations once again were exceeded.
Upon arriving we settled in very quickly, Casa Sonrisas has a way of making one feel as if you've come home again.
This elegant colonial home is charming and extremely spacious. The rooms are clean and furnished with tasteful, unique pieces and comfortable beds. There is a fantastic collection of fascinating original art throughout the home. The bathrooms are well maintained, clean with hot/cold showers. The kitchen is very well equipped and a favorite gathering place. We enjoyed typical Nicaraguan meals prepared by the very courteous housekeeper Carmen. She is very friendly and also does a fantastic job keeping the home clean and tidy. The location of this home is excellent, majestically nestled in a corner and conveniently within a short walking distance to the main square and "La Calzada", offering the opportunity to experience local arts and culture, delicious eats, people and the best of what Nicaragua has to offer. Every Friday-Sunday night staring at 6pm a street food kiosk sets up opposite corner of the home, be sure to try the tacos, to experience Nicaraguan street food at its best! The pool is alluring, especially after a fun filled day taking in the sites in Granada.
The owner is extremely helpful, professional and accommodating from the very start. She is very accessible and responds promptly to inquiries. We fully anticipate returning to this home and highly recommend this experience to travelers. Go ahead book your time Casa Sonrisas, you will come back time and time again!

Perfect Place

Our group of friends and family stayed at Casa Sonrisas in March 2013. We had a wonderful time. The pictures are exactly as the house looks. There is many extras you don't see in the pictures though. The house is extremely comfortable. Even though the living areas are outside it is cool, with a breeze continually. Granada is very hot in March, but with the pool in the courtyard you can always cool off. Everyone's favorite part of the house was the beautiful hammock.Carmen the housekeeper is amazing. She comes every day except Sunday and prepared 2 meals for us(This was a additional charge). There are 2 adorable dogs that live at the house,Millie and Victoria. Guiermo comes everyday to walk the dogs and take care of the pool. The location of the house was perfect. One block from the Casada and 3 blocks from central park. There is a pulperia (small convenience store) right across the street. We ate several times at the Chinese Restaurant next door.Try their Taco's(egg rolls). There was also a street vendor right outside the house selling food wrapped in bananas leaves. Excellent. Pat the owner was very helpful and clear with any instructions she gave. When we come back to Granada we would love to stay at Casa Sonrisas again.

Casa Sonrisas left us smiling and itching to come back!

  • 5 of 5
Our 2-week stay at Casa Sonrisas exceeded my expectations. We were a group of 9 teachers volunteering at a school in Granada. Casa Sonrisas was just what we needed to feel pampered after a hard day's work. I have stayed in several house tours in my 4 summer visits to Granada, and this house was ideal due to its location, size, and amenities. Casa Sonrisas is located just one block north of La Calzada (also known as the tourist street since it houses the restaurants and shops that visitors tend to frequent). It's proximity to the Central Park made it easy for the members of our group to find on their own from the very first day. There is a pulperia (general store) right across the street, which was convenient when we ran out of milk or sugar for coffee. The floor plan and the open courtyard of the house provided us with enough space for our large group. The pool was helpful in lowering our body temperature mid-day, and the mango and lime trees provided ample fruit for making healthy snacks and drinks. Each room was spacious and comfortable. The bathrooms were modern, and it was the first place I've stayed in Nicaragua that had excellent water pressure! We cooked in most of our meals. The kitchen had plenty of supplies (pots, pans, dishes) for our large group. Carmen, the housekeeper, is a hard worker-- she cleaned house daily, changed our bed sheets and towels when requested, and she refused to let us clean our own dishes. Carmen was also eager to help the Spanish-learners in our group with their language skills, and she is learning English as well. She treated us to wonderful fruit juices and (at our request) taught us how to prepare a typical Nicaraguan meal. Guillermo, the groundkeeper, arrived promptly each night to check in on the facilities, take care of the garden, and clean the pool. Claudio, the manager, was friendly and available at any hour to help with questions or special needs. Pat, the owner, was a great communicator, easy to contact, and responded promptly to any questions I sent her way. I felt like Casa Sonrisas was our home away from home. I will definitely stay there on my next visit to Granada.

Home away from home.

  • 5 of 5
Five of us stayed at this beautiful house for week during our recent visit to Granada. It really felt like home to us. The location is great; an easy walk to almost everything and even though it's only a block to La Calzada we weren't bothered by the noise( and that street can get noisy!). The pool was a lifesaver for us as it was extremely hot in early April. Carmen was a wonderful house keeper and prepared some nice juice drinks from local friuts. The dogs became part of our group instantly. They received a lot of attention from all of us and helped make the house a home. We loved relaxing in the beautiful courtyard and it's amazing how cool it was there when the outside temps were in the upper 90's. There are plenty of seating areas, and the open kitchen was perfect. We took the house tour in Granada one day and felt this house was even better than two of the houses we visited on the tour! I hope to get back to Granada some day and I know where I will be staying!

Perfect Family Adventure

  • 5 of 5
It would be hard to imagine a more perfect vacation. We were looking for a cultural experience for our young children (7 and 4), nothing too touristy, with a dash of adventure thrown in. Granada offered all that (and more) and Pat's gorgeous home provided a picture-perfect home base. There are far too many highlights to write about, but here are the top three: 1) Location. The home is just a few short blocks from the main plaza, and one block from a pedestrian walkway lined with terrific restaurants. There are tour operators along this walk (Tierra Tours recommended) that can arrange any outings you want. 2) Staff. A house manager greeted us upon arrival and showed us around the house. Carmen was the housekeeper, she came each morning to clean -- and is very willing to cook authentic Nica meals. Delicious! And two absolutely friendly three-legged dogs, Victoria and Millie, were perfect companions. 3) Pool. For our two kids, having the pool for relaxing downtime between adventures was perfect.

The house was perfect in every way -- beautiful (hummingbirds in the garden!), relaxing and very, very hard to leave. We will definitely be back -- particularly because our kids now consider this 'our Nicaraguan house!'

Seclusion in the city in an enchanting hideaway steps from the Calzada

  • 5 of 5
We've visited Granada many many times and are happy to have found a little gem in the center of all. Everything about our stay was great. We had a group of friends traveling on an overland trek from Costa Rica to Granada. Our goal: a cozy place to enjoy the sights of the city, shared company, cook, and relax. This was a perfect base for us. Our group could split up so the shoppers could get additional stops at the colorful outdoor markets and big central market, the guys could stay back at the house and watch sports, and in between we could all pop out to the pedestrian street with a line of fantastic restaurants and have our pick of cuisine. Pat greeted us with fresh-baked macaroons and welcomed us into her wonderful, charming, tailor-made house full of beautiful art and locally inspired style. We rented the full property and it was comfortable and spacious. It was as if we'd rented an entire Granada hotel. We had the huge closed courtyard and pool, yes, it really is in the kitchen. The property was larger, and even better than photographed, with all the touches of home. In spite of our long list of restaurants to visit we dined in one night and tried our hand at the wood fired pizza oven. We enjoyed a boat tour to the southern islands, photographing the eye-candy that is Granada, walking, souvenir shopping, and each day we could not resist the street food--huge portions of grilled chicken with beans, rice, and salad wrapped in banana leaves- right around the corner. With plenty of time to relax at our conveniently located home away from home this was my most restful trip to Granada to date.

Thanks again Pat, we'll be back on for an upcoming Visa Vacation, you've got the perfect spot!
