Experience Lightner Creek- Durango's best-kept secret

(the movie "City Slickers" was filmed at the end of the road)

Our secluded moutain chalet's entrance is over a private bridge, which crosses the beautiful Lightner Creek and winds through cottonwood trees up to the house. The chalet itself abuts the mountainside & has its own private trail up to the famed "Mushroom Rocks" plateau (where you can find 1000 yr old Anasazi Indian artwork along the ridge). Look out the expansive windows & high beam aspen ceilings of the home & you will be breathtaken by a few acres of diverse, magnificently landscaped terrain. Some of the features are a private, spring-fed pond stocked with monster rainbows, a couple private beaches & fireplace area on Lightner Creek, & meadows of aspen, cottonwood, pine & fruit trees. It is worth mentioning the fenced-in acreage make great ball fields, playground for kids & adults alike (in the winter, you can sled down the base of the mountain).

The property itself was built in 1997 with expansive windows & high beam ceilings. We have recently remodeled much of the home, including new hardwood floors, river rock fireplace hearth & entire build-out of 1st floor, which includes a large, carpeted kids' playroom. All of the furniture and linens in the home are brand new, which include a beautiful office area w/reclining lounge chair for reading.

I'm sure you already know about all that Durango has to offer & will just mention again that our 24 secluded acres are less than 4 miles from downtown & all the exceptional restaurants.

Back to our location- we are surrounded on three sides by Perin's Peak State Park, which means some of the best hiking/biking is right out the front door (pick up a guidebook & you will see Dry Fork Loop, Colorado Trail, Twin Buttes, Barnroof Point & Perin's Peak are all within walking distance of our home). If you really want the mountain "Durango experience," while being close to historic downtown, you have found the ideal place. It is very rare to find a secluded 24 acres, with functional flat acreage, creek, natural pond and a private mountainside, just 5 minutes to town. Even if you don't stay with us the first time in Durango, please drive by & I bet you will call us on your next vacation to Durango.

The property location in this small mountain canyon is just fabulous. Being among nature with the beautiful wildlife and breathtaking views all within walking distance of the house was convenient for my husband and I. We also liked driving to the historic places in Durango and surround area. The house was well appointed with all the things we needed for our stay. The upstairs loft and office area was very roomy, WIFI, telephone, beautiful large desk and working area enabled me to simultaneously relax, get inspired by nature and seamlessly work and keep in contact with my office. Definitely recommend this wonderful location for a work-play get-away! We truly felt rejuvinated after leaving your beautiful property! Thank you and we hope to visit again soon!

Family Friendly

This property is wonderful for family gatherings, especially if you have small children. The grounds around the house make for lots of fun exploring and for those rainy afternoon, there are lots of toys and games to keep the little ones entertained. The house is secluded enough be able to enjoy the Colorado scenery, but close enough to Durango to enjoy all that the town has to offer without added driving time.
Our family enjoyed our stay and will consider staying there in the future.

As I told the owner of this property, I have run out of superlatives to describe his Colorado retreat and the surrounding activities. The location is convenient to downtown (less than 10 minutes). The house is clean and well-maintained. The home is great for a family vacation.

The owner makes his guest feel welcome with a gift basket and a personal note about the area's attractions. I would definitely recommend this property to a friend or relative.

While staying in Durango, our family enjoyed several Mild-to Wild tours, including white-water rafting, Mesa Verde, a jeep/train tour, and a day at Durango Mountain. We also enjoyed the melladrama at the Strater Hotel and the Bar-D chuck wagon supper. Breakfast at Oscars was fun, and in general, all of the downtown restaurants were great. The Rapp Corral gives a wonderful trail ride.

All in all, our family of 9 had a great experience.

Great Experience

5 of 5
Submitted: July 16, 2012 Stayed: July 2012
Had the pleasure of staying at this property for with our extended family from 7/1/2012 until 7/7/2012.

We found the property itself to be extremely accommodating, given our family's size, and ages of the children present (2, 2, and 7). Not only was there plenty of room in the home, but the ability to "close off" the deck and back yard allowed our children to go outside without us having to worry about where they were at.

In addition, the property is located in a great location relative to the town of Durango. It is only a five or so minute drive to get downtown, but secluded to allow for a very relaxing vacation.

Looking forward to our next stay - thanks, Chris!

Great stay - highly recommend

My family of 5 (wife and 3 kids, ages 6, 9, and 10) traveled to Durango for the first time, and had a wonderful stay here.

The property is as described -- it's in a gorgeous, creekside valley location, yet it's just 5 minutes from town. You really can't ask for a better location to stay. The kids loved playing in the creek, and running around the grass areas to play baseball and catch butterflies. The property lot is indeed big; it's distant neighbors we never saw nor heard, and so our experience was wonderfully quiet and private as promised.

The house itself is beautiful and offered a wonderfully relaxing time for us all. The kids loved the video gaming room (of course), and my wife & I the large windows for the valley vistas. The kitchen was well stocked and enabled us to cook meals easily. The place was clean and well kept in all aspects.

Most important, the owners were prompt in their correspondence, and very helpful in suggesting places to see. Their suggestions worked out perfectly in helping us plan our trip.

In all, I highly recommend this property for anyone looking to enjoy Durango and the surrounding area. We certainly intend to come back again, on our next trip.
