House, 2 Bedrooms + Sleeping Porch, 2 Baths, (Sleeps 4)

Designed by famed architect Abraham Valenzuela, this house and location connects you to nature and each other in revitalizing ways. Many locals and guests call it the finest tropical home in the region. It overlooks a deep river basin, with expansive ocean views. You experience nature, instead of the sounds, lights and noise of man.

In a gated community 12 km north of Nosara with many owner-occupied homes close by. In the Rio Rosario river basin, which many feel has the finest microclimate on Costa Rica's entire 780-mile Pacific Ocean coast.

Just minutes from four great restaurants - Hotel Luna Azul, Hotel San Juanillo, La Brovilla, and Bahia - and easy drives to Nosara or Liberia with 3 new bridges built in 2012. This unspoiled coast area is inaccessible no more.

House offers colorful river basin and ocean views, and unforgettable sunsets. Lush grounds on all sides with flowering plants, ferns and palms. You hear crashing waves amplify up the river basin in soothing hypnotic sounds. Watch shimmering light reflections on its 50’ infinity-edge lap pool - always with perfect swimming temperatures and for lounging upon.

The house sits 300’ up and 1/2 km back up from the ocean to enjoy near perfect year-round temperatures. All concrete construction with exotic wood, copper and stone finishes, the house stays cool throughout the day. Lush tree canopies offer shade and attract many monkeys and birds. Most Nosara area houses require a/c in both the night and day, but this house only rarely requires a/c. This means you get to hear the sounds of nature instead of the sounds of electricity, compressors and fans.

The house has many exotic stone/copper/wood finish treatments. A large gourmet kitchen with European gas stove with convection oven. Satellite TV, wireless Internet and strong cell phone signals. Alarm system, safe room with renter's safe. Covered carport. Cleaning, pool and landscape services included, and concierge services too.

Two large bedrooms sit on opposite ends of the house. Large master suite has a king bed with a tree house-like feel, with tree canopy over decorative ferns and plants below. Its wood/glass walls open to all screen walls so you feel like you're in a tree house. Master bedroom opens on three sides to allow refreshing breezes to flow through. A double shower room in glass opens to a shower on a deck outside that overlooks gardens below.

Guest bedroom has a queen bed with 3/4 bath. Also a full-size bed in gazebo and deluxe daybed on veranda. A/c in both bedrooms, and luxury ceiling fans throughout.

The world-famous Ostional turtle beach is just 2 km south. Famous intermediate and expert surf breaks are close by in Nosara, Ostional and Marbella. The region's best safe swimming and snorkeling beaches are 2 km away in San Juanillo.

With the deep lap pool outside of most rooms, the house is not for young kids unable to swim. We prefer to rent to one or two couples, or a family of 4 with kids who swim.

About Larry Tanning

We live 9000' in Colorado's western mountains where beaver, elk, bear, mountain lions, coyotes and many other wild animals come on our property. This photo of an elk herd is from our house. We love nature, and why we are so attracted to this Rio Rosario basin.

Why Larry Tanning chose Nosara

We find most beach towns in Costa Rica (Playa Nosara, Tamarindo, Mal Pais, Samara, Flamingo, Jaco, Manuel Antonio, etc.) too hot, too noisy and too dusty. We don't like how a/c's disconnect us from nature. This house is in a microclimate only about 3 km wide on the coast. A 3300' mountain about 15 km NE of the house (Vista El Mar Peak) causes the NE trade winds to rise and cool to create this always enjoyable microclimate. The Rio Rosario starts high on the mountain's western slopes and flows year-round. It means a near perfect 12-month climate at the house with temps about 5 degrees cooler than beach areas just a few kms north or south.

What makes this house unique

The Ostional turtle beach is 2 km away. From June to January over 2 million Pacific Olive Ridley sea turtles (60-80 pounds) lay their eggs on this beach. The turtles arrive in the last dark quarter of the monthly moon. Their monthly egg laying sessions are called arribadas (‘arrivals’) and happen on 4 consecutive nights. Each turtle lays about 100 eggs. The eggs hatch about 50 days later, when tiny 4-inch turtles dig up through the sand for their scramble to the ocean.

For surfers, the famous Marbella surfing breaks are 6 km north – with a left-hand point break for beginners and a peaking A-frame beach break with incredible barrels for intermediates and experts. The great Playa Nosara intermediate surf beach is 12 km south.

Exquisite Secluded Luxury Home

First and foremost - believe every word of the owner's description. The house is not over hyped - this is an accurate description of a remarkable home. If you want nature, beauty, seclusion, luxury, privacy and relaxation - this is the place. If you want to be imbedded in a happening, bustling beach community - go elsewhere. This is for chilling - and occasional ventures out to eat out or get a massage or do yoga or something 8-12 miles away. The roads are difficult in this area - unmaintained dirt/gravel roads with large ruts, chuckholes, big rocks, dips etc. This includes the main roads - there are almost no paved roads within 30 miles. So be prepared for that and best to arrive via SUV and then relax and enjoy the benefits of this wonderful home.
What an amazing experience it was for us to spend a week here in this beautiful home. We left here with many quiet, peaceful memories… we didn't go and "do" a whole lot… which is the point, right? Reading, swimming, napping and eating our home-cooked "Costa Rica-style" food , were all part of the daily rhythm which slowed us down and brought us in touch with the flow of the natural world. We woke at sunrise and slept well after our nightly swim and star gazing. We did not bring a cell phone or computer - completely unplugged which added to our enjoyment.

We thank the owners for an unforgettable experience and are most grateful for the use of the private beach which we walked and/or drove to every day. After spending a week here both of us agreed that we were probably more relaxed than we ever have been....we will dream about this place back here in the Northwest.

best vacation ever

The Tanning home is beyond lovely and has more than everything you need for a very comfortable stay. The reviews and pictures are accurate, but nothing can capture the experience of staying in this gorgeous home. We were blown away. The property is beautiful, lush and well-maintained. It's obvious the house is well-loved and was created with the intention of a luxurious home away from home for the Tannings.
We loved the location of the house. Close to surfing and towns, bank, supermarket, restaurants etc., but far enough away to experience true peace, privacy and feel immersed in the natural environment. Luna Azul, a 2 minute drive from the house, was our favorite restaurant in the area. Delicious! We also loved breakfast at the Tiki-Hut in Marbella.
We liked the Nosara area more than Malpais. The surfing is better and Nosara has a relaxed, family-feel we enjoyed.
The Tannings are very helpful and provide lots of information. The staff is friendly and informative. We cannot recommend this property enough, we loved our stay here!

Great place to relax

We had a wonderful time at Larry and Chris' places. The house was amazing and the area around house is very quiet and peaceful. If you want a place to just read , play games, walk and swim, this is the place for you. Larry was very helpful and accommodating. The pictures of the house are accurate. Within hours of being at the house we had a family of Howler Monkeys greet us by the pool. The pool was perfect. We did not find the water to cool as other reviewer mentioned. The house was well stocked with candles, paper towel and toilet paper. The dishwasher was not working and the guest bathroom toilet was not working as well. Other than that the house was treated us very well. You wont regret renting this place.

Unforgettable Exotic Honeymoon !!

Truly amazing and one of most unique homes you will ever stay in. I stay in 4-5 star hotels most of the year and the design and thought process that went into this home doesn't compare to any place I've ever stayed. Truly amazing and one of most unique homes you will ever stay in.

My wife and I rented the Tanning home for our honeymoon and the home delivered everything we could have dreamed of and more! This home is a perfect blend of indoor/outdoor living, is completely private, and surrounded by custom rock walls and trees. You can't see the neighbors and they can't see you. ;-) The house faces west which makes for excellent sunset views over the Pacific Ocean every night! There is also an infinity edge pool that over looks the jungle, complete with a shady cabana for an afternoon reading or nap session.
We would recommend this home to any couple or couples who want to have their own mini mansion in the jungle. While staying here we saw several types of bird, lizards , butterflies, and even a whole family of howler monkeys! It is close enough to any tourist activities you would like to partake in, but far enough away from the hustle and bustle for much needed peace, quiet, serenity, and relaxation.
Thank you for the most memorable 10 days of our lives!!

Larry & Chris have created a glamorous manorhouse blended into nature with beautiful furnishings and accents. They attribute the design to a top architect but they deseve full credit for their own vision of a "tropical paradise" in CR. We were enraptured by the spectacular views & spacious feeling of being part of nature from any room in the house, swimming or enjoying the patio. Wide angle sliding glass doors expand the living area & integrate it into the natural settting. As a lap swimmer, I especially enjoyed swimming in the buff. What a treat to have all this beauty and privacy. Thank you for sharing it with us.
