AT THE EDGE OF SOLITUDE WHERE THE STARS ARE BRIGHT AND AIR IS FRESH

Custer Cabin Rental Photos and Description

Custom Log cabin perched on the rim of historic Red Canyon, in the Black Hills

Fortunately, some of the most beautiful places on earth can be experienced without the cost and responsibility

of actually owning them. Red Canyon Ranch in the Black Hills is no exception. Situated high atop

the Black Hills historic red-clay canyon, the location of the original route into the Hills for both

Native Americans and the white settlers that followed, Red Canyon Ranch is a monument to the cowboy

lifestyle, with elements of luxury and style that most cowboys have probably never seen. The cabin is a

lodge-pole pine dwelling, in the tradition of an aged lodge. It offers full views of Red Canyon

from three sides, rustic floors and cabinetry with state-of-the-art appliances, natural dry-stack, slate fireplace in

the living room, and master bedroom, sleeping accommodations for 6 people. An outdoor hot tub that nearly floats above the canyon’s edge makes night bathing under the stars a life-time memory.

There Are No Better Black Hills Views: On a clear day, Red Canyon offers extraordinary views to its east, where sheer red walls and jutting peaks accentuate the awesome powers that went into its creation, as well as the intricacies of its meandering path. To the west, the dense clustering of centuries-old Ponderosa pine easily explains how the area came to be known as the “Black”Hills, while a further gaze acknowledges, through beautiful open prairie, that Red Canyon does indeed have an end, and that Wyoming lies beyond.

You'll Love Our Neighbors: Red Canyon is home to the most diverse wildlife population in all of the Black Hills. Elk, Antelope, Mule Deer, Eagles, Mountain Lions and Turkeys are common sightings whose perpetuation helped with your participation in the rental of Red Canyon Ranch. It is because of this reputation for such varied and protected wildlife that the Red Canyon area was chosen to host the introduction of a starter herd of Rocky

Mountain sheep. These cliff-dwelling animals are expected to migrate to Red Canyon as soon as the sub-groups go off to establish their own herds, eventually becoming a welcome addition to ever day life

on the Ranch.

Explore The Best Part Of The Black Hills: The southern Black Hills holds something for everyone and every taste.Nestled among the rolling hills are a multitude of quaint towns and cities, offering shopping, dining, and tourist attractions that could easily fill your day with smiles. The area also hosts some of the country’s most beautiful parks and well-known monuments, all within a short and scenic drive from each other.

7,000 acres of hiking and horseback riding across this historic property featuring both forest and private preserve land.

My wife and I rented this cabin from 12/28/13-1/1/14 (4 night stay). It was PERFECT. The pictures above are spot on! The cabin is facing south, located literally on the edge of a beautiful canyon, with the main windows, deck and the hot tub overlooking the amazing vista. We were able to watch the sunrise every morning, and set every night!!! For folks considering this place for rental, here is what I'd tell you... It's not really kid friendly. With the deck built right up to the edge, there isn't much between you and a [very] steep drop into the canyon. Also, the unit's loft is a bit treacherous to get up and down from. So I definitely wouldn't recommend this unit for small children that are prone to accidents ;) Secondly, be prepared to be without your cell phone! It's about a 30-45 minute drive to the nearest location with cell service. The unit does, however, have a satellite phone and WiFi that is good for checking the weather/news and your emails, but don't expect to be streaming media from it.

Jim, your place is beautiful and we had an amazing experience. We intend to be back soon! Thank you.

We had a great stay at the cabin, even with the fickle weather. Had some sun almost every day between the light showers, which made for great pic's. Seen scores of whitetail, muleys, bison, pronghorn, elk, turkey, some mountain goats, bighorn sheep, marmots and a rare pine martin at Mt.Rushmore! We also had a coyote and 3 elk below the deck in the bottom of the canyon at the cabin. We ranged from the Badlands NP to Devil's Tower NM and all the parks in between as well as the backroads and scenic byways. Put on over 1300 miles and what a beautiful cabin and view to return to every evening to take a soak in the hut tub, grill dinner and relax with a drink on the deck overlooking the canyon. I highly recommend this cabin and Jim is easy to work with and has a first class property. Thanks again, Larry & Kathy

My wife and I spent 4 nights at The Founders Cabin.
The place is spectacular, with a view so beautiful, that no words can describe.

Thanks to Jim, he was very helpful at giving us directions/suggestions.

After a couple of days, it's difficult to leave.
We definitely enjoyed our stay, and look forward to come back.

Thanks again!

Everything one needs, and more, is already at hand.

The only disapointment is that, after a couple of days, it's difficult to leave.

We definitely enjoyed our stay, and look forward to come back.
Owner's Response: Thanks for the good review and kind words. We're so lucky to have appreciative guests who see the beauty in our canyon-rim home!

This cabin is amazing! My family of 4 stayed the last week in June. The views are amazing from three sides of the cabin. What a peaceful place to relax. The only sounds being your own voices, that of the breeze blowing through the pine trees and an occasional animal. After stopping for supplies on the way in, it's tempting to just stay put and take it all in day after day. The cabin has everything you may want/need. The two bedrooms & the loft all have very comfortable queen beds with very high quality bedding. Towels are fluffy and soft. The bathroom even has a window in the shower to provide the illusion of an outdoor shower (blinds provided for modesty if you so choose). The kitchen has all the amenities. I brought some kitchen utensils/tools along based on previous experiences renting cabins and everything I brought, they had!

There is ample hiking if you are so inclined right from your door. The owner will provide you with information on accessing the trails on the property. Never having been to the Black Hills, we ventured to Mt Rushmore, Crazy Horse, Custer State Park, Needles Highway, Sylvan Lake and Wind Cave and used the house as a base. We cooked in the outdoor kitchen most nights, although dined at "Desperados" in Hill City one night & had a wonderful dinner. Most of the activities were at least 40 minutes away, but we didn't mind the drive. There was always something to keep us entertained along the way. Especially "animal planet" taking place right outside the car window. Antelope, coyote, elk (only heard these), deer and plenty of free range cattle from a nearby ranch.

My husband brought his telescope along since there is no city light pollution. Incredible night skies! The hot tub under the stars on the edge of the cliff is the perfect way to wind down at the end of the day. Our boys ages 15 & 11 loved the location, the cabin & everything about it. There was plenty of room for everyone to come together or to spread out for personal time. As detached as you are from civilization, there is satellite tv and WiFi if you need to connect. There is no cell service, although the cabin does have a phone. Families with young children should be aware that the location of the cabin is literally on the edge of the cliff and safety should be considered when renting. The owners are generous, helpful, delightful people who are happy to answer any questions. A great experience!
Owner's Response: We were delighted to host our new found friends from Wisconsin. They were the perfect guests and seemed to genuinely enjoy all of their Black Hills experience. We sincerly hope they return or that they took plenty of pictures to remind them of our canyon and beauty of the Hills!
