Photos and Description of the Custer vacation cabin rental
Custom Log cabin perched on the rim of historic Red Canyon, in the Black Hills

Fortunately, some of the most beautiful places on earth can be experienced without the cost and responsibility

of actually owning them. Red Canyon Ranch in the Black Hills is no exception. Situated high atop

the Black Hills historic red-clay canyon, the location of the original route into the Hills for both

Native Americans and the white settlers that followed, Red Canyon Ranch is a monument to the cowboy

lifestyle, with elements of luxury and style that most cowboys have probably never seen. The cabin is a

lodge-pole pine dwelling, in the tradition of an aged lodge. It offers full views of Red Canyon

from three sides, rustic floors and cabinetry with state-of-the-art appliances, natural dry-stack, slate fireplace in

the living room, and master bedroom, sleeping accommodations for 6 people. An outdoor hot tub that nearly floats above the canyon’s edge makes night bathing under the stars a life-time memory.

There Are No Better Black Hills Views: On a clear day, Red Canyon offers extraordinary views to its east, where sheer red walls and jutting peaks accentuate the awesome powers that went into its creation, as well as the intricacies of its meandering path. To the west, the dense clustering of centuries-old Ponderosa pine easily explains how the area came to be known as the “Black”Hills, while a further gaze acknowledges, through beautiful open

prairie, that Red Canyon does indeed have an end, and that Wyoming lies beyond.

You'll Love Our Wild Neighbors: The Red Canyon area is home to the most diverse wildlife population in all of the Black Hills. Elk, Antelope, Mule Deer, Eagles, and Turkeys are common sightings whose perpetuation can be guaranteed by your participation in the Red Canyon Residential Ranch. It is because of this reputation for such varied and protected wildlife that the Red Canyon area was chosen to host the introduction of a starter herd of Rocky

Mountain sheep. These cliff-dwelling animals are expected to migrate to Red Canyon as soon as the

sub-groups go off to establish their own herds, eventually becoming a welcome addition to ever day life

on the Ranch.

The Explore The Best Part Of The Black Hills: The southern Black Hills holds something for everyone and every taste.Nestled among the rolling hills are a multitude of quaint towns and cities, offering shopping, dining, and tourist attractions that could easily fill your day with smiles. The area also hosts some of the country’s most beautiful parks and well-known monuments, all within a short and scenic drive from each other.

My wife and I spent 4 nights at The Founders Cabin.
The place is spectacular, with a view so beautiful, that no words can describe.

Thanks to Jim, he was very helpful at giving us directions/suggestions.

After a couple of days, it's difficult to leave.
We definitely enjoyed our stay, and look forward to come back.

Thanks again!

Everything one needs, and more, is already at hand.

The only disapointment is that, after a couple of days, it's difficult to leave.

We definitely enjoyed our stay, and look forward to come back.
Owner's Response: Thanks for the good review and kind words. We're so lucky to have appreciative guests who see the beauty in our canyon-rim home!

This cabin is amazing! My family of 4 stayed the last week in June. The views are amazing from three sides of the cabin. What a peaceful place to relax. The only sounds being your own voices, that of the breeze blowing through the pine trees and an occasional animal. After stopping for supplies on the way in, it's tempting to just stay put and take it all in day after day. The cabin has everything you may want/need. The two bedrooms & the loft all have very comfortable queen beds with very high quality bedding. Towels are fluffy and soft. The bathroom even has a window in the shower to provide the illusion of an outdoor shower (blinds provided for modesty if you so choose). The kitchen has all the amenities. I brought some kitchen utensils/tools along based on previous experiences renting cabins and everything I brought, they had!

There is ample hiking if you are so inclined right from your door. The owner will provide you with information on accessing the trails on the property. Never having been to the Black Hills, we ventured to Mt Rushmore, Crazy Horse, Custer State Park, Needles Highway, Sylvan Lake and Wind Cave and used the house as a base. We cooked in the outdoor kitchen most nights, although dined at "Desperados" in Hill City one night & had a wonderful dinner. Most of the activities were at least 40 minutes away, but we didn't mind the drive. There was always something to keep us entertained along the way. Especially "animal planet" taking place right outside the car window. Antelope, coyote, elk (only heard these), deer and plenty of free range cattle from a nearby ranch.

My husband brought his telescope along since there is no city light pollution. Incredible night skies! The hot tub under the stars on the edge of the cliff is the perfect way to wind down at the end of the day. Our boys ages 15 & 11 loved the location, the cabin & everything about it. There was plenty of room for everyone to come together or to spread out for personal time. As detached as you are from civilization, there is satellite tv and WiFi if you need to connect. There is no cell service, although the cabin does have a phone. Families with young children should be aware that the location of the cabin is literally on the edge of the cliff and safety should be considered when renting. The owners are generous, helpful, delightful people who are happy to answer any questions. A great experience!
Owner's Response: We were delighted to host our new found friends from Wisconsin. They were the perfect guests and seemed to genuinely enjoy all of their Black Hills experience. We sincerly hope they return or that they took plenty of pictures to remind them of our canyon and beauty of the Hills!

My husband and I decided to stay here for our honeymoon and boy I can tell you the views are spectacular! This is a one of a kind rental indeed. So much activities you can do whether it's site seeing, hiking or just wanting to relax, you can have it all at this cozy lil cabin! Custer is a half our away from the cabin so it's a bit of a ways to travel but all in all it's definitely well worth it!!!! You will most likely see an abundance of wildlife at the cabin or going to and from the cabin, so far we've seen deer, elk, turkeys, rabbits, chipmunks and right out the back door is a few geckos that live in the flower beds! The owners did a very nice job on this property, and are very kind!!! Jim will tell you all that you need to know and I hope this review helps you out for wanting to know more information on this spectacular home!
Owner's Response: We're flattered that you chose such a special occassion to visit our cabin. And, we couldn't be more pleased that we lived up to your expectations!

We spent our 25th anniversary at the cabin. My husband and I are very familiar with the Black Hills and really wanted a secluded, out of the way place. It is gorgeous. Still close enough to be able to do some of our favorite things, but experience a new area in the Hills that allowed for us to really unhook and enjoy ourselves.
