My husband and I love the incredible beauty of the Monterey area, including Point Lobos, Big Sur, and Carmel. We appreciate the wide array of cultural/athletic opportunities, from the Pebble Beach Automobile Concourse, to the Monterey Jazz Festival, to the Pebble Beach Pro Am Golf Meet. The restaurants are the finest anywhere and art galleries abound.

1. After settling in at the Little Jewel Box, and you are ready to venture out, we recommend a day-trip into the spellbinding beauty of Big Sur. On the way stop at Pfeiffer Beach to commune with the ocean. While in Big Sur visit Nepenthe for the shopping experience of your life -- gifts from East and West and all parts between, a remarkable array of art and craft. And while you are there walk upstairs to their outdoor cafe and enjoy a cup of coffee and an amazing spectacle of beauty. Down Hwy 1 be sure to stop for breakfast at Deetjins Big Sur Inn -- try their Eggs Benedict. Continue southward to Julie Pfeiffer State Park and amazing hiking opportunities in the breathtaking beauty only Big Sur offers. Stop by the Ventana, on your right leaving Big Sur, for a sumptuous late afternoon lunch on their outside veranda.
2. On another day, just 15 minutes South of the Little Jewel Box, visit what many consider the most beautiful natural preserve in the world, Point Lobos. Plan to spend the morning and pack a picnic lunch. After your visit go a bit further South to the Highlands Inn (Hyatt Hotel), on your left, making a beeline for the Sunset Lounge. Enjoy a late afternoon Martini, taking in the beauty of Point Lobos from yet a different, high elevation perspective. You will never forget the moment.
3. And of course just a dozen blocks away from the Little Jewel Box, you will find the amazing Monterey Bay Aquarium, the Cannery area, which includes incredible dining opportunities, the beautiful wharf, music, and clubs. If in a more pensive mood, stroll along the ocean walkway toward Pacific Grove, letting in the incredible splendor of the Pacific careening against the rugged coast line. Just a dozen blocks South is the cozy French Restaurant, Fi-Fi’s, one of our favorites -- try the Beef Bourguignon and one of their over-the-top desserts.
Hi Kipra - it was fabulous. We had to leave so early Fri morning to make it back to the city that I had no time to write in the journal.
Since my boys are small (ages 5 and 6) it was actually just fine. The sunroom really helped and we had borrowed a small air mattress from our family the weekend before, so it all worked great. You have an amazing attention to detail. Everything was so organized and well thought out and labeled - we loved your recommendations too. The kitchen was wonderful. We cooked breakfast every morning and a couple of dinners and had exactly what we needed. The town was so quaint yet had the Whole Foods store close by for our special diet requirements. We all loved the beaches, biking and the aquarium was fantastic as well. Next time we may have to bring my parents so my husband and I can truly enjoy the fine dining/wine in the evenings without kids. We are ready to go back already. My son was so cute - every day after the beach excursion he would say, "I am ready to go back to the Little Jewel Box now."
Thanks so much!
My wife and I spent a wonderful month at “the little jewel box” as our home away from home from mid-January to mid-February, 2015. From the moment we walked through the door, we knew we were in for a treat. Entering, we immediately felt as though we had walked into the luxury of a well furnished apartment in Paris. Every room, from the bedroom and bathroom to the living room, kitchen and dinette, the space has been well designed and appointed, providing for efficient use of space and ease of movement throughout. As we enjoy preparing our own meals, the kitchen, though small, was more than adequate. From pots and pans to glassware and cutlery and the most well stocked spice drawer we have ever encountered in such accommodation (truly a bonus!), we found this home lacked nothing. The French Doors opening from the living/fireside room to an outdoor patio provided yet another room for morning or late afternoon relaxation.
The welcome folder is always something we enjoy reading in every home, providing helpful information about the home as well as the general area, its sites, shops, and eateries. Here, the owners have provided an extensive and detailed folder that far exceeds the norm, and we took advantage of many suggestions and “don’t miss” recommendations.
The location of the little jewel box enabled us to leave our car at the house and walk everywhere as we explored Monterey, Pacific Grove and the coastline east and west. We used our car only to drive outside the area. The little jewel box’s location is only 12 blocks from Cannery Row with its eclectic array of restaurants, shops, coffee shops, parks, plazas and the Monterey Aquarium. Though the home is located uphill from the waterfront and may be a challenge for some people, we did not find it difficult and often made the trek a couple of times a day. Altering our routes to and from the waterfront, was a wonderful way to explore the neighborhoods of this and its neighboring city of Pacific Grove as well as forging optional routes to and from the Bay front.
Our enjoyment of a month in Monterey is credited to and enhanced by the owners’ thoughtfulness and preparation of this lovely home, their ready availability to respond to questions, and their warmth of hospitality extended to us while staying in their VRBO.
We feel that we rented the “jewel of jewels” in Monterey and hope to return in the near future. It may be the “Little Jewel Box” but it is a “Jewel Box of Large Heart.”
You will love your visit to the Little Jewel Box. The owner has taken
great care in the design and maintenance of this property. Expect great
communication and be prepared to treat this home like the treasure it is
with no shoes inside. I hope other renters will continue to use care when
they visit so The Little Jewel Box is in as lovely condition the next time
I visit! I will definitely stay here again.
The space heater in the little guest bedroom was handy and served to add
just the right amount of white noise for my little one to sleep. While the
home is small it is also well designed and well appointed so I had no space
issues whatsoever for storing my things or moving around the home
My husband and I love this sweet little house. It's super clean, charming and cozy. We didn't cook, but used the kitchen for breakfast and snacks. The house is comfortable, lovely for sitting around and reading or napping in between activities. The owner gave us great recommendations for restaurants and other activities. My favorite: rent a kayak at the Coast Guard dock and see the seals and sea otters along the shore. If I ever return to Monterey/Carmel, this is where I want to stay.
Though Little Jewel Box is indeed small, it is most certainly a "high end" home. We have stayed in numerous homes claiming to have all the comforts of home, but very few actually do. Little Jewel Box had everything we needed. Though we didn't cook many meals in the kitchen, it had everything we needed and then some - picnic basket, receptacles for leftovers, nice wine glasses to name a few. The bedroom was well-appointed and we appreciated the laundry facilities. There were many thoughtful touches included; an insulated bag, sun hats, umbrellas, water bottles, nice bath products and more.
We tested out the walk to/from downtown the first night and found it do-able, though appropriate shoes were a must. The combination of the owner recommendations and Yelp meant we found several good meals, Passionfish being our favorite of the vacation. Though Cannery Row was not our favorite spot, we had no problems visiting other spots like Carmel and Big Sur using Little Jewel Box as a home base. It was also nice to be able to walk to the bike rentals one day when I was without a car while my husband golfed.
The owner was easy to work with and even mailed me back an item that was inadvertently left in the home.
My family has stayed at several VRBOs throughout the country, and this VRBO ranked among the best. The owner was very responsive to our inquiries and helped to make our stay there comfortable and enjoyable. The Little Jewel Box is in a great location and has all the amenities guests need to cook a gourmet meal, relax with a magazine or guide of the area, or enjoy a glass of wine after a day of touring. It's also impeccably decorated and very clean and well-maintained. The cottage is in a fun historic neighborhood within walking distance of the main downtown area. As another reviewer noted, it is downhill to Cannery Row and uphill back to the cottage, but we enjoyed the walk and seeing the neighborhood "by foot". We'd highly recommend this VRBO and the area overall - this was one of our best vacations!
If you are considering a renting a house in this area, look no further! This house is just wonderful, a true gem indeed! I was on a getaway with a dear friend and my hunch was that the house would be more fun place for us to hang out than some hotel room where we are stuck inside with those two queen beds that just face the wall with the tv..... and I am SO glad we went this route. My friend is a decorator so I knew she would not settle for some house with lame outdated furnishings, which is how I originally found this place -- and of course she loved it!
The house offers so many opportunities for hanging out - we had our coffee on the front garden every morning, chats by the fire at night, even cooked dinner one night in the petite kitchen. SO MUCH BETTER than a hotel room! The house is very well appointed and the owners have thought of everything. They also give you a great guide to the area which has some great tips (we loved brunch at Mission Ranch and never would have found it without their recommendation).
I work in travel and have been to hotels and resorts all over the world and I think an experience like this is actually much more of a luxury than being in a hotel. Especially if you are with an old friend or a loved one and you want to spend some quality time with them!!! It is also way easier on your budget because you can simply make breakfast at home, with some help from the Trader Joe's down the street. I don't know about you, but I think hotel breakfasts are the biggest rip-off in hotels. That and paying for wi-fi (the house has free wifi)! So not only is it a more fun option, it works out to be a way better value.
I KNOW I will be back!
Bonus: a calico long-haired cat came by each morning to say hi and was very chatty and friendly.
The other bonus is for tennis players: free public courts across the street.
