The Lake House, with 7 BRs & 6 BAs, is nestled among mature trees and sits upon a small rise with a commanding view of Stone Lake. **The property includes a lakefront lot with a private beach, porch and boat dock reserved for Guests that is just a 150-foot stroll from the main house down a path through the trees (the main house is 75 feet and across a quiet dead-end street from the lake.)** As such the property offers the best of both worlds: The seclusion and serenity of a quiet wooded retreat combined with the fun and excitement of lakefront property.
The Lake House features a completely restored 3,900 sq ft Craftsman-style home with rooms full of charming woodwork and walls of windows. Built circa-1935 as the dream retirement home by the couple who originally farmed all of the land around Stone Lake, the house has central air conditioning and is perfectly arranged for multiple families.
A unique feature to the house is its numerous private spaces that are located throughout - on both levels - that are great for reading, napping, quiet conversation, etc. Yet the house also has large public gathering spaces that can accommodate the whole gang: A 1st floor 450 sq ft Gathering-Game Room, a spacious Dining Room with a table that can seat up to 16 (with table space for 6-8 more a few feet away at the two kitchen tables), and a 600 sq ft deck with a pavilion roof over much of it with lots of seating and a firebox. Another popular outdoor gathering space is the large firepit set in a private area tucked near the trees for seclusion - yet only steps away from the house (and accessible by vehicle for those with mobility challenges).
A NOTE ABOUT ACCESSIBILITY AND THE LAYOUT OF OUR LAKE HOUSE
With its Spring 2013 renovations the Lake House is now wheelchair friendly:
A. The new concrete parking pad gently slopes up to the front door to allow one to exit a vehicle on a hard surface and enter the house with zero steps.
B. The following ground floor rooms are wheelchair accessible: LR, DR, Kitchen, Breakfast Nook, Gathering-Game Room, 1st Floor BR-BA Suite in the Attached Guest Quarters with its ADA-compliant full BA with 3x5 roll-in shower. Also the 600 sq ft deck overlooking Stone Lake is wheelchair accessible.
Below we describe the 3 sections of the Lake House: the Main House, the West Wing, and the Attached Guest Quarters (AGQ). Please note that these 3 sections are all connected as one large house; none of them are separate structures.
THE MAIN HOUSE (3 BRs, 2 BAs)
Has plenty of room for one or two families with a Queen bed master bedroom, 2 guest bedrooms with full-size pillow-top beds, two full bathrooms, and of course the living room, dining room, study, and large eat-in, fully equipped kitchen. The Main House also includes the 450 sq ft Gathering-Game Room with lots of windows, pool table, foosball table, ping pong table, 55-inch flat screen LCD TV w/ JBL audio, 4 leather sofas, 2 Bistro tables with barstools, and a 2nd full-size fridge to keep the beverages cold! This space is also ideal for Yoga Groups, Scrapbookers, Quilters & Business Retreats.
THE WEST WING (2-3 BRs, 2 BA)
Attached to the Main House, the West Wing is perfect for another one or two families with a large 2nd floor MBR-MBA suite (the brand new BA has a spacious 3 x 5 shower) with a Queen bed and its own private outside entrance. On the 1st floor of the West Wing there is another BR with a Queen bed plus a Twin Bunkbed. Just outside the BR door is a full BA. The West Wing includes the TV Room with a 50-inch LCD flat screen TV which can also serve as a private bedroom (that makes 8 BRs total). The West Wing is automatically included with the Main House and is not an additional cost.
THE ATTACHED GUEST QUARTERS (2 BRs / 2 BAs)
Completed in April 2013 and attached to the Main House is the 2-story, 770 sq ft optional Attached Guest Quarters (AGQ) that adds 2 more BRs and 2 more BAs - room for another one or two families. This addition includes a 1st floor wheelchair friendly barrier-free BR-BA suite with a Queen bed, a 3 x 5 roll-in shower with grab bars and built-in folding bench, knee-room vanity, fold-down grab bars at the toilet -- and plenty of maneuvering room. The 2nd floor BR in the AGQ is generously proportioned with a vaulted ceiling, a Queen bed plus a Twin bunkbed, and its own private BA with a roomy 3 x 5 shower. The AGQ gives the Lake House a total of 7-8 BRs and 6 BAs spread over 3,900 sq ft of finished above-grade living space.
A NOTE ABOUT OUR BEDS
All Queen beds have high-quality memory foam toppers that make them exceptionally comfortable. Both Full size beds have pillow-top mattresses that are also very comfortable.
THE LOG CABIN
The lakefront Amish-built western red cedar Log Cabin is part of the property and sits directly on Stone Lake (built April 2009). The 15' x 22' Log Cabin features a cozy Little Great Room with a soaring 18-foot high cathedral ceiling, a wood-burning fireplace, and includes two full-size futons. The 2nd floor Loft overlooks the open great room and has a Queen inflatable Aero bed that sits 18” off the floor and has a 4” thick memory foam topper -- very comfy. The cabin has a TV with DVD and VCR, a huge 60-inch ceiling fan, window AC, and a fridge to keep your beverages cold -- right at the water's edge.
***** PLEASE NOTE: To see lots of photos of our Log Cabin, Pontoon Boat & the Amish-built Playset see below link that reads 'CLICK HERE - Add'l Photos of Our Vacation Property.' The link is right above 'Map and Owner's Profile.' ******
The Log Cabin has a high-tech Sun-Mar Excel composting toilet in the bathroom for use by Log Cabin Guests (instructions included - it's easy to use and extremely sanitary!) but there is no running water. However Guests can easily use the main house's 6 full bathrooms for showers and baths.
Whether or not you rent the Log Cabin, its 22-foot covered porch, lakefront dock and sandy gentle-slope beach are for your exclusive enjoyment while staying at the Lake House.
Most all of our warm-weather Guests enjoy reserving our Pontoon Boat Pkg. It really opens up a whole new world to be able to get out on the lake - the little ones just love playing 'captain' steering the boat -- and it makes for a great mobile swimming platform. Sunsets are glorious and it's so peaceful to be out in the middle of Stone Lake and just slowly drift and watch the waterfowl, birds, etc. And if anyone likes to fish - that's what Stone Lake is famous for! We include (actually require) in the rental of the Pontoon Boat a personal orientation session by a qualified boating instructor so that the Pontoon can be operated safely and with confidence; fuel and life jackets are provided.
Included at no add'l cost with the Pontoon Boat Pkg are four (4) easy-to-use Sea Eagle 2-person sit-on-top Kayaks, plus an aluminum fishing row boat. These are perfect for Mom and Dad to take the kids out on the water to explore the quiet undeveloped shoreline of Stone Lake to experience aquatic life up close and personal. Or let the teens go out and have a blast on the water with their own private flotilla of watercraft!
For Guests with children who love to vacation with other families, it's truly an ideal destination. And with its accessibility features the Lake House has become a favorite for multi-generational family reunions and 40-, 50- and even 60-year wedding anniversary celebrations.
We're happy to answer any questions you may have so please ask away!
Fondly, Ted & Brenda
P.S. The 47 wooded acres w/ trails surrounding the Lake House are great fun for the kids & grown-ups to explore (dogs really love it!).
P.P.S. We've added 8 Mountain Bikes (mix of child and adult sizes) for our Guests to ride on the trails in the 47 acres of woods -- and through the residential areas of the Village of Cassopolis for those who like to admire the many grand turn-of-the-century homes that are sprinkled throughout. Bring your bike helmets!
We have many wonderful Guest Reviews on our full property listing on VRBO.com, property #262334.
Our group was five families of 4. We rented the home for a Holiday Gathering over New Years Eve. We found the house well stocked, clean and ready to receive a group of card players, puzzlers, sports watchers, billiard fans and video buffs. The large dining table partnered well with the kitchen table and provided ample seating for the entire group to sit down to dinner together. The house offers large gathering spaces with seating for all but also smaller nooks for quiet conversation or cards. The property boasts woods and trails for exploring. Every body had a comfortable bed and that is rare for our family! Ted and Brenda were wonderful to work with. We plan to return again and again.
My family consists of 8 adults and 8 children age 15 years to 18 months old. The house is big enough for all with beds not even used. House and kitchen had everything we needed. Pontoon boat and rubber kayaks are a must. Ted, Brenda, and Don were wonderful to deal with, and a lot of help. Park Shore Golf Course is very close and OK. Fishing Stone Lake is good for the kids. Plenty of small Blue Gill. Lots of other lakes close by for better fishing. Patio area is great. Big deck with 2 ceiling fans, plenty of seating, and 2 grills, 1 gas and 1 charcoal. Everyone had a great time!
We rented the Lake house for our biannual family vacation and had a wonderful week! We had ages ranging from 5 months to 58yrs. with almost everything in between. We have a hard time finding accommodations not only large enough to house all of us, but also handicapped accessible. This property definitely filled the bill! We used the entire big house as well as the log cabin (which smelled heavenly of cedar) and were soo pleased. Made use of the meat market recommended by the owners, and the grocery store list. Some of our younger group made a winery, brewery afternoon tour, close enough to do easily. Having the kayaks was great, the pre-teens and others could go out on the lake themselves within view of parents. We were able to get our handicapped family member down to the beach, on the pontoon, and to the fire circle, he didn't have to miss anything, what a treat! We will certainly try to book this house again, it was great!
What a wonderful place for our 50th wedding anniversary. We had alot of room for our family (three kids with their spouse, 8 grandkids (one grandson just married and one grandson with a great grandson), and our 8 year old beagle, minnie). Pontoon was very nice for evening rides on the lake, some did do some fishing. Ted was right about where to get smoked ribs, they were great.
This home will not disappoint you. The large common areas are wonderful and spacious. If you are sleeping in the west wing you will hear nothing if others are up and about. The home allowed for private time as well as time together for our three families. A very large covered deck was a wonderful place to unwind from the days activities. We played soccer, frisbee, and beers bee on the upper land. Nights were for roasting marshmallows at the fire pit. The home is well kept and the game room is wonderful for pool tournaments and ping pong. We found the owners very helpful.
I stayed with a large work group in September of 2014. Overall, we were quite satisfied and I both recommend the property and return to the property. A few thoughts:
- Center game room was a great gathering place.
- Great overall space. Some homes this large don't "feel" large. The sleeping rooms were spacious. The common areas fit our group of 10-12.
- The property surrounding the home was great and completely unique. Our group of 25-40 year old adults played games in the woods (essentially a huge game of capture the flag- please do not judge us- this was a company/team building outing and most did not have a choice). It takes 4-5 minutes to walk to the back of property.
Things to consider:
No property (even luxury properties, etc.) is perfect. Here are a few things to consider.
- Owners mentioned to keep the noise down. We found out the hard way (mid-day, mind you) when the neighbors screamed at us. If you want to be loud, you need to strongly consider whether this property will work for you. If you are out at night, you should not sit on the deck attached to the house- we had 10-11 people and whispering was not an option (use the back fire pit). Good behavior is needed in any rental property, but this is a bit disappointing.
- The lake is weedy and murky. The lake is not much when compared to nearby Diamond Lake. Also, there are no lake views from the main house. That said (!), we still enjoyed trolling around this lake!
- The lake house (a huge positive) is across a small road. You can't have your young children sleep there. There is not much of a beach, but there is likely 50 feet or so of private shoreline. My kids would likely have enjoyed it. Also, that home would come in handy if you were enjoying the water during the day (we were warned about this neighbor as well, but eventually he opened up to us and was quite friendly). Overall, this 2nd home is an asset.
- Take a closer look at the pricing on this property. Each part of the home carries an additional cost. Overall, it was consistent with the pricing of other 6-8 BR homes I viewed across western MI (I looked at 40 or so and spent countless hours evaluating). Basically, I initially thought this was a great value. I wouldn't necessarily say this isn't the case- it carries a reasonable value.
Overall the property was in good condition and had many benefits (unique benefits). As I said, I'd recommend and return (possibly with family)!
The Lake House, with its private sandy beach, is on quiet 148-acre Stone Lake that's 7 minutes from 1,020-acre Diamond Lake's public access boat ramp, and is surrounded by 50 private wooded acres with trails for Guests to explore. Two golf courses are 5 minutes away, with another dozen courses 15-45 minutes away. Swiss Valley Ski Area is just 13 minutes away, and there are numerous wineries in the area that offer public tours.
Downtown Cassopolis is an easy walk from the Lake House - just 0.8 miles - and features restaurants, bars, banks & ATMs, and a 5th generation hardware / general store (easy place to buy an inexpensive fishing license).
Just outside of the downtown area - a 5-minute drive - there is a grocery store, drug store, fresh-cut meat market, fast-food restaurants, gas stations, video store and more.
Within 30 minutes are numerous antique malls, movie theaters, bowling alleys, multiple large Amish communities with unique shopping opportunities, University Park Mall, go-cart track, putt-putt golf, museums, Notre Dame University...the list of family-fun activities goes on and on!
PLEASE NOTE: Google Maps is not accurate...our property is on Stone Lake along the southern shore...the house is NOT on M-60...it's on a very quiet dead-end road - Lake Shore Drive.
