The Wunder family lives in Boulder, CO. We are a husband, wife and a teen girl. We enjoy traveling, snow sports, contemporary art, fine wines and gourmet meals. We moved from Santa Fe to Boulder to take advantage of the outdoor sports and athletic mindset that prevails in Colorado and Boulder especially.

Tom Wunder purchased this lodge in 2009

Rocky Mountain National Park (RMNP), wildlife, fishing, hiking, canoeing, skiing, cross country skiing, snowmobiling, horse back riding, golfing, snow shoeing, lakes, and sledding are a few of the reasons we chose to build in Grand County. There is aggressive hiking for the adventurous, beautiful less strenuous hikes along the Colorado River, and, at dusk, some of the best animal watching on the planet. Grand Lake is an unpretentious western town with the deepest lake in Colorado.

The views transport you and it is easy to spend hours on the porch or looking out the windows watching the colors, the sky, and the animals come and go. This lodge realizes all the images we hold of what a 'lodge' is: the hearth, the warmth, the beauty, the serenity, the comfort, the quiet, nature finding her way into the home. The windows are abundant allowing guests to enjoy all the views.

Cooking at the lodge is a communal experience with the kitchen producing meals that everyone proudly takes ownership of--crepes are a lodge favorite. On the wraparound covered porch is a large grill and a picnic table for 14-16 people. There are plenty of rockers on the porch for everyone to sit outside--chipmunks and humming birds are regular visitors.

If puzzles and games strike your fancy, there are dozens from which to choose. If you are a film buff, we have a serious collection of DVD's you can enjoy on our large screen. A beautiful llama and alpaca farm can be visited across the road.

Perfect!

You do the research, you pick a place, and you hope it turns out to be half as nice as it looks. Well this place was everything we had hoped it would be and then some. Any apprehension we may have had when booking the home quickly faded when dealing with the homeowners, Tom and Melinda Wunder.

We found them to be friendly, honest, and generous with their time and knowledge of the area. They enthusiastically answered every question we had and did exactly what they said they would do when they said they would do it. It was as though we were dealing with old friends from the very first contact to the moment we walked into the home to find a most warm and gracious welcome note on the countertop. Although three pages in length and full of any and all of the information we may have needed to manage the property, the essence of the note was “welcome home, what’s ours is yours, please enjoy.” And enjoy we did.

And the home, the Wunder Cabin, couldn’t have been more perfect. A beautifully appointed home, exquisitely finished and unbelievably comfortable. Quiet, secluded yet quite accessible, and with views from the home and wrap around deck that are nothing short of breathtaking. Perfect.

There were ten of us. Five couples from across the Midwest and Southwest, gathering as we do nearly every year to celebrate our friendships that go back to our college days circa 1967-73. We enjoyed food, wine, laughter, golf, hiking, shopping…and all from the comfort of our beautiful home, courtesy of the Wunders. We can’t thank you enough. It was all too PERFECT!

We met other family members here for family vacation retreat and we were not disappointed! The whole experience, including reservation paperwork and details provided by a very professional, efficient and experienced host, was awesome! This area offers tons of activities for all ages, interests and abilities. The property was easy to find, centrally located and as shown in the pictures. The house was very well stocked with the essentials and provided clean, comfortable accommodations that were of the quality of provisions you might expect in a property of this class. The owner's local staff member met us upon arrival to show us around and answered all our questions. Any questions that came up during our stay were addressed promptly. The views overlooking Lake Granby with Continental Divide in the background were beyond exceptional! Rocky Mountain Nat'l Park and the quaint town of Grand Lake (restaurants, shops, boat rentals, live entertainment) are a short drive away. The town of Granby has a large newer grocery store and hospital, which we found comforting since we had a small child with us. Three contiguous lakes and surrounding mountains provided endless opportunities for glimpses of wildlife and reconnection with nature. Whether your ideal vacation is to play hard or to retreat and relax, this will fit your needs. This is a vacation rental experience that we hope to revisit again soon!

We will be back!

Dear Tom and Melinda -

Our first impression of the house was how well situated it was to provide the most incredible views (both at day and night - the most amazing thunderstorm I've ever seen!). Upon entering the house, our spirits soared to the height of the ceilings, and our first thought was that there was no way the website pictures could have fully captured the feeling of being in the house. The house truly brought out the best of us all week. We enjoyed the art throughout the house, used the sauna several times, grilled fish we caught ourselves, dined on the porch, and the kids screamed as loud as they could roasting marshmallows over the fire pit - which was fine because there were no neighbors close enough to hear! The master suites were very comfortable, sophisticatedly decorated yet cozy, and the mornings could not have gotten off to a better start with light streaming through the room and luring us to the wrap-around balcony with the incredible views.

Thank you for being so friendly and available to answer questions. We were delighted to meet you in person. Above all, thank you for trusting us with your wonderful home. You obviously dedicated a tremendous amount of thought into the design, hospitality, and amenities.

We intend to return in 2015!

Great time at Wunderview

  • 5 of 5
Had a great time at Wunderview. The house is very nice and comes fully equipped for everything you'll need. It is truly a home away from home. Full BBQ grill, fully equipped kitchen, canoes, bikes, etc. The porch was one of the key items for us; it was a good place sit and sip coffee on the cool mornings and just as good to sit and sip a glass of wine in the evenings. Our kids enjoyed feeding the chipmunks and ground squirrels right from the porch, so bring plenty of peanuts.

Owner was extremely helpful before and during our stay and gave good advice on things to do, and the area has plenty to do for everyone. We took 2 trips up into Rocky Mountain National Park and saw so many deer, elk, and moose we lost count. Plenty of good hiking trails too. If you want to rent a boat for pleasure stick with Grand Lake. If you prefer fishing Lake Granby is the better choice. We spent one day down in Winter Park and had a great time with all their summer activities.

Thanks for a great summer vacation.

"Amazing Family Vacation"

"Amazing Family Vacation"

This was the most amazing and beautiful home in every way. The views were breathtaking and I loved not having neighbors on top of us while we were outside on starry nights, enjoying our bonfires. The sauna was definitely an added bonus. Everything was so perfect, clean and very well stocked. My wife and I took our 5 children and parents for their 56th wedding anniversary. Mr. Wunder was out of town but made sure the house manager and another young lady were able to greet us and show us all around the home. It is an incredible drive through Rocky Mountain Nat'l Park and takes 1 1/2 hours to arrive in Estes Park. We took a day trip to Colorado Springs to see Pikes Peak Railway and The Garden of the Gods. Although it was a 3 hour trip one way, it was well worth the trip. We drove from Tampa, Fla. (31 hours, in 3 days), but it was well worth the drive. We added to a collection of brochures and literature on the kitchen counter of things to do in the area. The whole family loved the ATV's from a company we rented from called, ”On the Trails". We saw an abundance of wildlife at the cabin and all in the park, which the south entrance is only 15 minutes north. I only wish Wunderview wasn't so far away, we wouldn't hesitate to return.

A gem for VRBO

  • 5 of 5
Our family spent 4 nights at Wonderview and this was the top lodge we have experienced by far. The place is very clean, well appointed furniture, top of the line beds for sleeping which is not typical, chef kitchen with all top of the line cooking ware, close to winter park but even closer to the national park and most of all hot sulphur springs. We seek new properties and the family did a fantastic job with the design and interior design. You will not be let down.

Notes:
Breathtaking views of the continental divide, adjacent to BLM land, great wildlife viewing, original contemporary art throughout home, log structure is hand-hewn, fantastic gourmet kitchen with commercial appliances, European glass showers, radiant heat, best views in Grand County! The nearest property is about 1/3-1/2 mile away--Wunder-view is not in a subdivision where there are many homes: 25 acre parcels is the average lot size.
