About Tom Wunder

The Wunder family lives in Boulder, CO. We are a husband, wife and a teen girl. We enjoy traveling, snow sports, contemporary art, fine wines and gourmet meals. We moved from Santa Fe to Boulder to take advantage of the outdoor sports and athletic mindset that prevails in Colorado and Boulder especially.

Tom Wunder purchased this lodge in 2009

Why Tom Wunder chose Granby

Rocky Mountain National Park (RMNP), wildlife, fishing, hiking, canoeing, skiing, cross country skiing, snowmobiling, horse back riding, golfing, snow shoeing, lakes, and sledding are a few of the reasons we chose to build in Grand County. There is aggressive hiking for the adventurous, beautiful less strenuous hikes along the Colorado River, and, at dusk, some of the best animal watching on the planet. Grand Lake is an unpretentious western town with the deepest lake in Colorado. We would say Grand County is a true reflection of what Colorado is all about!

What makes this lodge unique

The views transport you and it is easy to spend hours on the porch or looking out the windows watching the colors, the sky, and the animals come and go. This lodge realizes all the images we hold of what a 'lodge' is: the hearth, the warmth, the beauty, the serenity, the comfort, the quiet, nature finding her way into the home. The windows are abundant allowing guests to enjoy all the views.

Cooking at the lodge is a communal experience with the kitchen producing meals that everyone proudly takes ownership of--crepes are a lodge favorite. On the wraparound covered porch is a large grill and a picnic table for 14-16 people. There are plenty of rockers on the porch for everyone to sit outside--chipmunks and humming birds are regular visitors.

If puzzles and games strike your fancy, there are dozens from which to choose. If you are a film buff, we have a serious collection of DVD's you can enjoy on our large screen. A beautiful llama and alpaca farm can be visited across the road.

Perfect!

  • 5 of 5
You do the research, you pick a place, and you hope it turns out to be half as nice as it looks. Well this place was everything we had hoped it would be and then some. Any apprehension we may have had when booking the home quickly faded when dealing with the homeowners, Tom and Melinda Wunder.

We found them to be friendly, honest, and generous with their time and knowledge of the area. They enthusiastically answered every question we had and did exactly what they said they would do when they said they would do it. It was as though we were dealing with old friends from the very first contact to the moment we walked into the home to find a most warm and gracious welcome note on the countertop. Although three pages in length and full of any and all of the information we may have needed to manage the property, the essence of the note was “welcome home, what’s ours is yours, please enjoy.” And enjoy we did.

And the home, the Wunder Cabin, couldn’t have been more perfect. A beautifully appointed home, exquisitely finished and unbelievably comfortable. Quiet, secluded yet quite accessible, and with views from the home and wrap around deck that are nothing short of breathtaking. Perfect.

There were ten of us. Five couples from across the Midwest and Southwest, gathering as we do nearly every year to celebrate our friendships that go back to our college days circa 1967-73. We enjoyed food, wine, laughter, golf, hiking, shopping…and all from the comfort of our beautiful home, courtesy of the Wunders. We can’t thank you enough. It was all too PERFECT!

Ringing in the New Yeat at Wunderview

  • 5 of 5
Our family had such a lovely time here together during the week of New Year's Day! Every comfort was provided, and there was a full moon at night and blue skies every day. Despite -17 degree temperatures at times, we were cozy and warm inside. We appreciated our welcome note from Tom, and being shown around by Katie upon arrival. We had clear skies for all of our snow adventures, and our youngsters spent lots of time at the game table, centrally located by the kitchen and the fireside comfy chairs. We appreciated the ease of arranging our stay and for the generous hospitality extended throughout our stay.
There were nine of us: six adults, 4 and 6 year olds, and a baby crawler. We found the upstairs "suite" was perfect for our family with young children: the bunk bed room was exciting, the adjoining bathroom had a big tub and a handy step stool for their sink; the large bedroom was a perfect space for mom and dad, with room for the provided pac 'n play where baby slept. The lounge space on this floor was ideal carpeted space for our baby crawler while our young ones watched movies from time to time. Perfect hang out space for all.
Our young adults had the "nest" in the lower level, complete with privacy, a fireplace and sauna! The first floor level has a spacious bedroom off the main house space: we could see the full moon every night from here, and from anywhere in the house we could watch the llamas across the way and the breathtaking snow capped mountains all around.
We all spent lots of time on the main level where the fire kept us cozy, and our children played at the game table: making beaded necklaces, lego building and play times with toys and blocks. The children dubbed the the large dining table "the castle table", feeling they were in King Arthur's court! The king and queen, the prince and princess all had assigned seats in the high backed chairs around the table....
Several in our group tried snowmobiles for the first time under clear blue skies and stunning mountain scenery; now they're "hooked". We all shared a New Year's Eve "two horse open sleigh" ride at Sombrero Stables at Snow Mountain Ranch, and spotted three moose on the ride back! We enjoyed the free sledding at Grand Lake Nordic Center, and open space snow shoeing not far from our cabin. We had ski lessons and a ski day for most of our group at Granby Ranch, where they also offered kid friendly fireworks at the end of daylight on New Year's Eve.Ideal vacation!

Thanksgiving at Wunderview

  • 5 of 5
Nine of us met up last week at Wunderview for Thanksgiving. We arrived during a winter storm and were pleased to follow snow plows across Berthoud Pass and see plows continuously clearing CR41. When we arrived, we were graciously greeted by Katie, who had started a cozy fire by which we were delighted to warm up! We spent the next two days of the storm baking in the fabulous kitchen, reading by the fire, watching movies and the kids playing in the snow. We spent Wednesday exploring Winter Park and tubing to our heart's content. Thanksgiving was spent cooking and relaxing. Friday was clear and sunny - our first skiing of the season at Winter Park! We were delighted with the amenities, comfort and warmth of Wunderview. Thank you, Tom & Katie, for your generous hospitality. It was a lovely retreat in the Rocky Mountains!

Wunderview is the Best!

  • 5 of 5
We've stayed at quite a few places up in RMNP. That is until we found Wunderview..

Last year some friends and I rented Wunderview, and it is 100 times better than anywhere we've ever seen . Anywhere! Wunderview really does have something for everyone!

A photographer friend of mine was with us, and praised it for its views of Lake Granby, Grand Lake, the Continental Divide, and the diversity of wildlife there. She loved that it was conveniently located near Trail Ridge Road where she took candid shots of herds of elk and deer, and other animals in Sept of last year.

Our boating aficionado took us boating on Lake Granby this year, and it was a splash! And had so much fun! There are so many fun places to eat and shop as well. And there are so many places to hike for all different levels of fitness. And maybe you will see one of the many elusive Moose like we did last year on a hike in Adam's Falls...

But staying in the cabin is fun as well! The place itself it exquisite. It's a three story home away from home with a wrap around balcony porch, that has all the charm of a rustic cabin, coupled with the fine, upscale modern conveniences of a home. (A chef who went with us this year drooled over the chef's kitchen, commercial grade appliances, and pantry stocked with goods. He couldn't believe he found the Molasses he needed for a breakfast dish)!

Everything you are looking for is there: There are canoes, bicycles, walking sticks...everything to take in the scenery. And its so homey...the linens and the pillows are top notch. The beds themselves are divine and so comfortable. (If you can make it in them anytime soon)... We held a few intimate dinner parties, (It helps to have a chef in the bunch), in which a Bose stereo was made available to us, with 1000's of downloaded songs and playlists. We also stayed up and roasted marshmallows and smores in the outside fire-pit.(And yes they provided all the wood)! I haven't done that in so long. We laughed and even told a few host stories of old. We lounged at the many fireplaces in the home with Very comfy seating, We also played some of the numerous games available to us.

In short, we went sightseeing, got back to nature, and got closer, all in a little piece of heaven where we could hear ourselves think, and remember we are human beings (not simply human doings)...

Thank you so much Tom and Melinda for welcoming us home again this year! We love it there!

Comfortable Luxury

  • 5 of 5
Wunderview is a beautiful home and our extended family truly enjoyed it during our recent stay. Tom sent us a very thorough and helpful list of things to do, including phone numbers, people's names, etc. That definitely helped us do as much, or as little, as we wanted. Some of us went to the alpaca farm across the road and the neighbors there could not have been nicer! We drove into the Rocky Mountain National Park and saw elk, deer, and a moose (RMNP is less than 15 minutes away). We enjoyed Shrek at the Rocky Mountain Rep Theater, went white water rafting at Mad River Adventures, and horseback riding at the Rusty Spurr Ranch - both in Kremmling. The views from Wunderview's gorgeous deck were incredible! Finally, we really appreciated Tom and Melinda's theory of hospitality - if it's there, feel free to use it. The extra jackets and coats in the laundry room came in handy once or twice! Overall, we had a great week.

A Wunderful time at Wunderview

  • 5 of 5
Our large family of 17 stayed at Wunderview and had a "wunderful" time. When looking for the perfect vacation getaway, it was important for all of us to be able to stay together in the same home. This home was so versatile and provided that for us. It allowed each family unit to have their own space and bathroom facilities. And the kitchen was to die for. Tom and Melinda made the stay one we will never forget. They were very accommodating from bringing us extra supplies during our stay to mailing us things we forgot after our return home. The kids had a great time climbing the hills around the house, riding the bikes provided with the home but mostly playing with the chipmunks! Those critters provided hours of entertainment! I would highly recommend Wunderview if you are considering the Winter Park/Granby/Grand Lake/Rocky Mountain National Park area.
