The Wunder family lives in Boulder, CO. We are a husband, wife and a teen girl. We enjoy traveling, snow sports, contemporary art, fine wines and gourmet meals. We moved from Santa Fe to Boulder to take advantage of the outdoor sports and athletic mindset that prevails in Colorado and Boulder especially.

Tom Wunder purchased this lodge in 2009

Rocky Mountain National Park (RMNP), wildlife, fishing, hiking, canoeing, skiing, cross country skiing, snowmobiling, horse back riding, golfing, snow shoeing, lakes, and sledding are a few of the reasons we chose to build in Grand County. There is aggressive hiking for the adventurous, beautiful less strenuous hikes along the Colorado River, and, at dusk, some of the best animal watching on the planet. Grand Lake is an unpretentious western town with the deepest lake in Colorado.

The views transport you and it is easy to spend hours on the porch or looking out the windows watching the colors, the sky, and the animals come and go. This lodge realizes all the images we hold of what a 'lodge' is: the hearth, the warmth, the beauty, the serenity, the comfort, the quiet, nature finding her way into the home. The windows are abundant allowing guests to enjoy all the views.

Cooking at the lodge is a communal experience with the kitchen producing meals that everyone proudly takes ownership of--crepes are a lodge favorite. On the wraparound covered porch is a large grill and a picnic table for 14-16 people. There are plenty of rockers on the porch for everyone to sit outside--chipmunks and humming birds are regular visitors.

If puzzles and games strike your fancy, there are dozens from which to choose. If you are a film buff, we have a serious collection of DVD's you can enjoy on our large screen. A beautiful 25 acre llama and alpaca farm can be visited across the road.

You do the research, you pick a place, and you hope it turns out to be half as nice as it looks. Well this place was everything we had hoped it would be and then some. Any apprehension we may have had when booking the home quickly faded when dealing with the homeowners, Tom and Melinda Wunder.

We found them to be friendly, honest, and generous with their time and knowledge of the area. They enthusiastically answered every question we had and did exactly what they said they would do when they said they would do it. It was as though we were dealing with old friends from the very first contact to the moment we walked into the home to find a most warm and gracious welcome note on the countertop. Although three pages in length and full of any and all of the information we may have needed to manage the property, the essence of the note was “welcome home, what’s ours is yours, please enjoy.” And enjoy we did.

And the home, the Wunder Cabin, couldn’t have been more perfect. A beautifully appointed home, exquisitely finished and unbelievably comfortable. Quiet, secluded yet quite accessible, and with views from the home and wrap around deck that are nothing short of breathtaking. Perfect.

There were ten of us. Five couples from across the Midwest and Southwest, gathering as we do nearly every year to celebrate our friendships that go back to our college days circa 1967-73. We enjoyed food, wine, laughter, golf, hiking, shopping…and all from the comfort of our beautiful home, courtesy of the Wunders. We can’t thank you enough. It was all too PERFECT!

Our recent stay was amazing! The house has every amenity and is very cozy and spacious. We especially loved the view, the wrap around porch, the fireplace, the large dining tables, the well stocked kitchen and the comfortable beds. The heated floors were a neat touch this winter. We had fun with the sleds and disks. The wildlife was great to watch. We had kids ages 10-18 who had plenty of fun with the movies, games, puzzles and exploring the outdoors. We explored the area by skiing Granby Ranch, tubing in Fraser and the Nordic center, visiting the YMCA for skating, sleigh rides and more. You won't find a nicer house than this for your next vacation.

We had 3 families and a total of 14 people stay in the house during the kids Spring Break. From our families to yours, we thank you so much! We love your awesome cabin, it had just the right touch! Upon entering the cabin, our kids were in a daze: the home, the view—we were all amazed. We had three ten year olds, three thirteen year olds, and two high schoolers. Your games, your DVDs, your puzzles were great. The 1000 piece scattered puzzle is now complete. We left it on the table all nice and neat. It brought our three families together on a snowy day. The we went outside for a little sledding and snowball play. The amenities in your home are great. The owner hospitality was incredible. He sent us several pages of activity suggestions, which was extremely helpful. We are six very happy parents. Thank you!!

WOW!! Our stay at WunderView was amazing!! Everything about this home is first class.....the beds were comfortable, the gourmet kitchen with the Viking cook-top & oven, every amenity you can imagine - the bathrooms were spacious, the floors were heated, the fireplace in the living room made everything more cozy. There is no detail left undone!!! The furniture is wonderful and inviting, the antiques, the art! It was the best experience we could have ever wished for - we felt like we were "home". Tom, the owner is friendly and very pleasant. His approach "use whatever you need to - it is there for your enjoyment" made our stay even more enjoyable.

The views...oh my goodness, the views from this home were breathtaking. Sunsets, sunrises, even during the middle of the day the views were amazing! This home is quiet and secluded which made our stay there even more enjoyable.

Thank you Tom!!! We will definitely stay here again when we return to Granby.

Wintery Wunder-view was Wonderful!

Looking for the true Colorado experience? Look no further! It doesn't get any better than this...
We spent the whole month of January at Wunder-view. Quiet and peacefulness were keywords. We loved relaxing on the enormous wrap-around porch where we enjoyed our morning coffee watching the breathtaking sunrises. Not to mention the sunsets and the clear starry skies. We took in all the changing colors of the sky and the never tiresome views with the Continental Divide on the horizon. We mostly had 'blueberry' days (blue skies and a warm sun). As for wildlife: we had herds of elk right in the backyard, saw foxes on the frozen lakes, a mother moose with its calf, and even a few bald eagles. But when not outside, Wunder-view is a great place to spend your days in front of the fire, cooking, or watching a movie.
We enjoyed the many visits to Grand Lake for shopping and eating out. Tom was extemely helpful in providing information about all the activities in the vicinity. We enjoyed all the hiking/snowshoeing trails in Rocky Mountain National Park. We went skiing at Granby Ranch and Winter Park. But also a daytrip to Vail and Breckenridge proved doable. Tubing in Fraser was lots of fun. And then there was the snowmobiling on the scenic groomed trails in Arapahoe National Forest - wow!. A definite must is dogsledding (in Steamboat Springs) where we had the opportunity of driving our own dog team. The dogs took us along a beautiful 12 mile backcountry trail.
With all those winter activities it was always great to unwind in the hot sulphur springs. Great soaking and relaxing. Although the sauna at Wunder-view also did the trick ;)
And finally a visit to the alpaca farm down the road was great as Paul and Judy were wonderful in giving us a tour.
Five stars all around: for Wunder-view and Tom and Melinda and for the location with all it has to offer!

Notes:
Breathtaking views of the continental divide, adjacent to BLM land, great wildlife viewing, original contemporary art throughout home, log structure is hand-hewn, fantastic gourmet kitchen with commercial appliances, European glass showers, radiant heat, best views in Grand County! The nearest property is about 1/3-1/2 mile away--Wunder-view is not in a subdivision where there are many homes: 25 acre parcels is the average lot size.
