Open floor plan comfortable living area sun-drenched windows; light, bright and clean; kitchen with everything you need for carefree beach vacation; private setting but very close to bike path and island trolly that both go all over our special island; just down the road are Katama Bay town boat launch (free launch service) and Katama Bay soft shell and quahog clamming (license required from town clerk); at that launch, drop your kayak or boat and venture over to barrier beach or up Katama Bay to Edgartown Harbor; surf fishing great at South Beach; also know as one of world's best beaches, South Beach has lifeguard on duty, bathrooms, change room and parking all free; at South Beach is entrance to trustee's reservation if you have a four wheel vehicle (fee for registration); or you can bike or walk north to Edgartown village for a bite, shopping, a movie or for quick trip over to Chappaquiddick island which is a part of Edgartown. Accommodations and Amenities: Central vacuum; pine floors throughout and no wall to wall which we believe is key to maintaining a clean environment; window fans and oscillating fans for each room; price includes all utilities and trash removal; internet/WI FI, satellite TV with music stations, DVD and radio; a no pets and no smoking policy are central to keeping our house a clean, “beachy” home; outside water hose next to parking area so you can wash down your car, beach or fishing gear ( or let the kids have a water fight !); kids play yard and tree hut in front; outside swing set and clothes line are both in the back yard; outside post lights and flood lights for nighttime events; picnic table is conveniently located of a grass patio just outside the kitchen door and barbeque deck (you can use our large rustic brick BBQ or one of our gas grills); there’s plenty of lawn furniture to enjoy the sunset from the vantage or the front lawn; and for bikers, we can show you how to use inside bike storage, but most folks just leave their bikes outside.

Our home offers warmth, peace and fun for young and old alike, your family, guests and friends; all points on the island easily accessible via public bus including hospital, airport, cultural activities and other island towns and beaches.Martha's Vineyard is an island located 8 miles off the Cape Cod peninsula in Massachusetts. Once a whaling center, it has become a favorite summertime haven of many celebrities.

About Don and Kathy Welch

Welcome to our family home! We have been on the Vineyard for over 40 years where we enjoy not only the entire island but also visits from our children and grandchildren. Recently we started wintering in Key West, Florida (where the above picture was taken by Key West's 'parrot man'), but we still spend late Spring, the Summer and late Fall on the Vineyard. Throughout the years we have worked to improve the condition, appearance, cleanliness, amenities of our home with equal emphasis on landscaping which is our passion. We truly believe that you will feel right at home and that you will have a great vacation. Our mission is to let our home be your home away from home! Thanks, Don and Kathy Welch.

Why Don and Kathy Welch chose Katama

Katama is one of the most desirable areas on Martha's Vineyard.The word 'Katama' comes from a Wampanoag word meaning 'crab-fishing place.' The terrain is a flat out-wash plain, characterized by sandy soil and few trees. It is sometimes referred to as the 'Great Plains.' Katama has been a popular summer resort since the late 1800s. Our Katama home is strategically located close to South Beach/Katama Bay and the Village of Edgartown. Better yet, it is located on a private and quiet road, just a short walk to 1) the island-wide biking trails, 2) a trolley stop which will connects in the Village of Edgartown to all island destinations and 3) the Katama Airfield. Just down the road are South Beach ( public beach with summer lifeguards, restrooms and free parking) and Katama Bay, protected by a barrier beach, which is great spot for shell fishing and launching kayaks. It also has a public landing and boat ramp. Or you may want to visit the close by Katama Farm which is owned by the Town of Edgartown and leased to The Farm Institute a nonprofit teaching farm that educates and engages children and adults in sustainable agriculture through the diverse operations of a working farm by providing year-round educational programs offering learning experiences in: Farming (field crops, produce, fruit, hay); Land preservation; The culture and history of Martha's Vineyard farming; Nutritional awareness; and Humane livestock management (cattle, poultry, swine, sheep, goats). Forgot to mentionRight Fork Diner 508-627-5522 (Summer only) at 12 Mattakesett Way (right at Katama Field Airport). Food is served inside or on their deck right in the middle of Katama Airfield so you can watch the private planes take off and land.The bi-plane tours of the island are fun too.

Our home has hundreds of feet of gardens and is surrounded by a manicured lawn surrounding the entire home. It is situated in a private quiet residential neighborhood We take great pride in keeping our home clean and healthy. We have an absolute no pet no smoking rule. Having pine floors throughout and no wall to wall helps maintain a healthy environment; and the basement has a dehumidifier. ; window fans and oscillating fans for each room; price includes all utilities and trash removal; WI FI, satellite TV with music stations, DVD and radio; an outside water hose next to parking area is available so you can wash down your car, beach or fishing gear ( or let the kids have a water fight !); kids play yard and special detached kids cottage; outside swing set in the back yard; outside post lights and flood lights for nighttime events; picnic table is conveniently located outside the kitchen door and barbeque deck; and there’s plenty of lawn furniture to enjoy.

One of the most sought after areas on the Martha's Vineyard, Katama is a great area for family oriented visitors. Katama is not only close to the village of Edgartown, it is also close to fabulous South Beach. Two large, safe and convenient bike paths go to the beach and to town. In addition, just down the road from our house, an island run trolly passes going to the beach and back to town where you can connect to all points on island. (Oak Bluffs,Vineyard Haven, Tisbury,West Tisbury, Chilmark and Aquinnah).

Other Activities: shell fishing, lighthouses, playground, Katama Farm Institute, kayaking, boating.

  • Down stairs bathroom has a tub shower combination with an all new sink and commode and vanity and tile floor and mirror. We provide a hair dryer and a basic first aide kit. And please note that we have a full service hospital on the island. The upstairs bathroom also has an all new sink and commode and vanity mirror and tile floor and linen storage closet. Your will find, that all folks old and young alike, use the Outside hot shower in the backyard; it is very private and also serves as a change room. Most people returning from their day adventure hang their towels on the conveniently located back yard clothes line and then shower up before going in side. One mom called the process “Beach sand management – the fun way.” --- After all, mom and dad, we know you want your stay to be truly a vacation.

Our family has been vacationing on Martha"s Vineyard for thirteen years and this is by far the best house we have rented. Let me start out by stressing how immaculate this house is, which is of utmost importance to me. This is truly a warm, comfortable home which is lovingly taken care of by the owners. The property is beautifully maintained and perfect for families with small children. My four year old had so much fun on the see saw and swing and was thrilled with the tree house. As for location, you can bike so many places including the Right Fork Diner for breakfast, which is just a few minutes away. I can't say enough about this beautiful, clean home away from home. We did not feel like we were staying in a rental property; it was more like being a guest in someone's home.

Beautiful Setting, Cozy Home, Fabulous Hosts

The benefits extend well beyond the wonderful amenities, cleanliness, coziness, and beauty offered in the home. The owners manage the property - they are amazing hosts, finding whatever extras we needed to ensure a great time was had by all, including our young child. Lots of yard space in which to run and play. The proximity to the beaches and town by bike is awesome (via bile trails - even better!). The grounds are filled with beautiful gardens, birds, and other wildlife. It's the best of both worlds - easy access to the beach and town events; privacy and comfort to support the need for a respite. We highly recommend this property for your stay - a great deal and definitely will fill your experience with great memories.

Lovely Beach Home

My family enjoyed our stay last summer at the Welch home on Martha's Vineyard. We especially like the location in Katama and enjoyed biking to the beach which is nearby. The location is also close to one of our favorite spots the Katama Airfield, where we got morning coffee. The house was neat and clean and had all the amenities needed. The Welches were very courteous and wanted to make sure our needs were met during our stay. We would definitely recommend their home for your summer vacation! The Millers

Wonderful stay in katama

we stayed at the cottage during our usual week on the vineyard, the end of august through labor day. The cottage is clean, cozy, and stays comfortable even in the heat of the day. Great location for getting to south beach, either by car or bicycle. This was important so our young daughter could nap in the middle of the day. The upstairs bedrooms were quiet and cool, she slept better on the vineyard than at home! Also a good location for quick drives to edgartown and OB. Very cheerful setting, with flowers and cheerful birds. Don't miss the outdoor shower- no need for the inside one!!

Great house and perfect hosts. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at your place and our stay on the Vineyard. Our next trip back east will definitely include your house. Our only regret is we only got out to South Beach for an hour. Too many other things to do.

We still believe the Black Dog has the best chowder we've had and my son-in-law says Skinny Fat was the best sandwich he's ever had. The grandkids loved Flying Horses.
