Overview

Montego Bay House Rental Photos and Description

2 Bedrooms, 1 Bathrooms, Convertible bed(s), Sleeps 6

Welcome to one of the most unique vacation opportunities in the world. Only at Reef Watch do you get a car, driver and guide for the duration of your stay.

Hubert, our caretaker, will treat you like a king and a friend at the same time. He will enable you to experience Jamaica like a native and learn first hand what beautiful, kind people there are in Jamaica. The cuisine, sights, sounds, and people of our sleepy fishing village, Scarlet Hall, are part of the Reef Watch experience. Sit back and listen to the locals speaking their native tongue, Patois, while music from the village drifts through the air. The barrier reef is just offshore and will provide you with fish, conch and lobster to complete your authentic Jamaican meals.

Our secluded grounds include fruit bearing trees and plenty of shade, patio space, and a spacious observation deck for star gazing and sunbathing. You will return home a changed person with thoughts of a return trip.

Immersion tourism: Reef Watch is as far from the typical all inclusive Jamaican resorts as you can get. Guests are immersed in the culture, sights and sounds of our village while living amongst the Jamaican people. The adventure includes authentic meals, secluded beaches, and a guide to bring it all to life. We have plenty of sun and shade on the property. Guests can experience the sights of the north shore of Jamaica before returning to the solitude of Reef Watch.

Hubert James: The best part of Reef Watch is the people of our village, Scarlet Hall. In particular, Hubert, our guide and driver is the cornerstone of the trip. He lives directly behind our home, and he knows the north shore down to every detail. His knowledge base and easy going personality will enhance your vacation. Traveling to the attractions allows Hubert to fill you in on the details of the terrain, villages and people as you pass them on the roads. He will introduce you to his family and friends and he often knows the store and restaurant managers. If you like, Hubert will cook real Jamaican dishes for you in the Reef Watch kitchen. Hubert is an accomplished spear fisherman, so your meals may include fresh fish, lobster, crab, conch and octopus.

Attractions: Scarlet Hall is located close to many popular attractions. These include Dunn's River Falls, Martha Brae River rafting, and the Luminous Lagoon. You can visit desolate beaches or explore a farm in the nearby hills. Snorkeling, SCUBA diving and spearfishing are available. Many guests make overnight trips to Negril to enjoy some fine dining or live music. We can recommend a place to stay. Montego Bay and its shops and restaurants are less than 30 miles away.

Reef Watch is a beautiful home tucked away in a very special paradise. This was our sixth trip to Reef Watch. Every time an adventure! Good food and plenty to do. The listing description is accurate and the website gives you a very nice overview of what to expect. The property is situated in a fishing village. Take some to get to know those that live in the village. Open your mind to exploration and adventure and you will find yourself becoming a repeat customer to this very special place.

5+++ out of 5!

  • 5 of 5

OMG what a special treat this place is! I almost don't want to tell others how truly unique and amazing it is. Hubert is a gem and we could not have enjoyed our few short days there more! From the moment he picked us up at the airport, stopped for groceries, got us settled in, and then took us spear fishing (and then cooked the lobster, octopus, and many fish!!), to Rex's Farm, to the Greenwood Greathouse and to a couple of great local restaurants - oh and his home grilled jerk chicken was superb! We had to head to a conference at an all inclusive nearby and I sure wish we had just stayed at Reef Watch the whole time. We WILL be back.

Second Trip

  • 5 of 5

This was our second visit to Reef Watch and we had another awesome stay. We were able to see the friends we made in November and was able to make a couple of trip to see Rex, we highly recommend at least one visit with him.

Our stays at Reef Watch have been an awesome cutural experience. We were touched or was fortunate to touch someone every day, some days more than once.

If you are looking to really experience Jamaica you may have to get out of the all inclusive compound and off the highway, that's where the real Jamaica is. Hubert and Reef Watch will help you find it.

Will we be back? Count on it.

Respect,

Jerry and Jane

Best Vacation Ever

  • 5 of 5

This was our first visit to Jamaica and Reef Watch and our first ever one month vacation. At Reef Watch it didn't take us long to get the feel for Jamaica. If you really want to experience and see Jamaica, we highly recommend Reef Watch, a car, and Hubert as your driver available 24/7 is a big plus. Hubert is your go to guy, he will bend over backwards for you, just be honest and tell him what you want.

We met Hubert's family, Davia, Javian, Yanique and baby Jaheem, we bonded with them all and will miss them, as well as Hubert's many friends and family.

We enjoyed everything, loved the food at "Sooys", the best fried chicken ever. Did lots of site seeing around the island and met some very interesting people, like Rex, an elderly gentleman that lives in the hills. It was very enjoyable to hear his stories of the old Jamaica, he really touched our hearts, we saw him two times. Make sure you play "Lutie", it's so much fun!

We could go on and on, this was simply our BEST vacation ever, wouldn't change a single thing, the experience was life changing, in fact we are going back in March!

Thank you Hubert for everything, what a great vacation we had, most of all, thank you for your friendship! "Yeah Mon"

Mixed Bag

Many pros and cons: Overcharged $100 @ grocery store on way from the airport. Refunded a couple of days later. No apology. Brought to Bobbie’s Boutique for a swimsuit. Prices upwards of $100. No suit to fit. Offered no other store to buy at. Went on my own to other store 2 days, bought super cute suit for $25. Horseback riding -Braco Stables ($240 for 4). Lovely ride to breathtaking secluded beach. Rough on way back. Guide was trying to catch up with a group he was to go out with. Inner thighs and legs burning, chaffed and raw as horsed were made to trot the whole way.Guide did not let up. Wear pants! Martha Brae-($120/family) pleasant, enjoyable. Fishing w/Yellow, nice guy but no fish ($250 but reduced to $225 because we left late.) Snorkeling with Hubert– he caught and cooked yummy dinner of lobster, fish and octopus, veggies. Javian (great guy) also cooked us amazing bkfst w/ greens. Evenings – played lootie w/3-4 local boys on screened porch. Invited them along to beach a couple times. Boys were nice but always there waiting for us to come home from wherever we went and stayed until asked to leave at bedtime. Back in am. Sometimes our boys would retreat inside just to get some breathing space. I would tell them our boys were resting and to come back later. That they did, or they just waited on the hammock or played lootie on porch without them until our boys came back out. A little invasive. Nice, until it got to be too much. Favorite meal-Jerk Hut place we went to twice for lunch. We treated the local boys there one day after the beach and it was delicious and very reasonable (about $54) for the 9 of us. Same night went to the Angry Squid for dinner, but would have to wait ½ hour for buffet to start. $15 each buffet of shrimp, lobster, salad, soup, the works. But after late lunch we were not that hungry so Hubert took us to a local dive. No menus. My son ordered lobster and that alone turned out to be $30 US. It was our most expensive and worst meal. Should have waited for Angry Squid–smelled great and lovely setting over the water. Rex’s house-this is the sort of thing I came for. Charming old Jamaican man who raises pigs and produce. He talked about Jamaica and the “good old days.” Ride back through countryside so beautiful. Fri & Sat -parties in Village both nights, music blasting until 2:30/3:30am No sleep, misery. Wished we would have checked out 2 days early and went to a hotel.

Owner's Response: Being that this is the worst review we have ever received we felt that we needed to respond. We have addressed the lingering locals with our caretaker. In the future they will come only when specifically invited. Restaurant lobster is pricey. We only eat the lobster that we catch. The remainder of this guest's complaints are not within our control. Most guests find the details of the village, villagers and country endearing. The cultural immersion that makes Reef Watch so unique is what separates us from the typical all inclusive resorts. I encourage prospective guests to read our other reviews. They represent the typical experiences that our guests have enjoyed.
