Built by popular science fiction writer, Margaret St. Clair, and her husband, local radio personality, Eric St. Clair, this cozy two bedroom, two bath home on one acre has a panoramic white water ocean view to Point Arena Lighthouse with private beach access. Situated on a hill overlooking Irish Beach on the beautiful Mendocino Coast, the home offers a gas fireplace, decks, a beautifully landscaped garden, hot tub, window seats, skylights and oak floors, along with amenities such as free WiFi, DVD, stereo tape deck and CD player, a music and film library, and clock radios in each bedroom.
The home sleeps a maximum of 5 comfortably in 2 queen-size beds and a full-size sofabed with Simmons mattress. Bedside reading lamps, electric blankets, and down comforters are provided, foam or down pillows are available.
Within a half-hour drive is the charming village of Mendocino with its quaint shops and excellent restaurants, you can easily drive east to enjoy an afternoon of wine tasting in beautiful Anderson Valley or south to visit Pt. Arena's beautiful lighthouse and fascinating exotic animal preserve.
The town of Manchester, 1 mile south, has a country store that sells food, meats, fresh produce, wines, etc. Five miles south is Pt. Arena with a pharmacy, movie theatre, Indian casino, gas station and bank with ATM.
Please note: there is no broadcast TV reception in Irish Beach. Due to allergy sensitivities no smoking or pets are allowed.
California residents who are driving to Irish Beach are expected to bring their own bed and bath linens. There is a $60 cleaning fee. Guests staying 4 nights or less have the option of cleaning for themselves.

The owner of St. Clair house is a retired employment lawyer and former Labor Commissioner of California. She and her son, David, who is the Warranty Director for a large national builder, have continuously upgraded the property over the last 19 years, incorporating many unique items she collected during her early travels as an international airline employee. She currently lives in Walnut Creek, California.

"Just wanted to let you now what a fabulous time we had at your beach house. The weather was fairly cooperative, and we enjoyed just getting away and walking on the beach and spending some precious time together. The house was absolutely great! The views were wonderful, even through the fingers of fog that greeted us each morning. We visited the beach at low tide and were able to see anemones and starfish galore! The amenities in the house were perfect, and even though we didn't take advantage of the hot tub, we probably would next time we visit. All in all, a lovely, but long drive, and wonderful times spent in the house and on the beach. Rick and I are hopeful that we can visit again and thank you for sharing such a beautiful place. We definitely feel like we've found the perfect beach getaway!"
Stayed at the St. Clair house for 2 nights for our 8 year wedding anniversary. It was very relaxing to say the least! Great views of the beach, a hot tub overlooking the garden and the ocean and all amenities that you can think of. Some helpful tips: The walk down to the beach is not as easy as you would think. It is steep and the climb back up the hill is treacherous (at least for out of shape people like us) ;-) We definitely recommend taking the car. Also, bring non stick pans if you plan on cooking anything that may require it as we couldn't seem to locate any- although there is just about everything else you can imagine to cook with. While the vacation we took was just for us two for our anniversary, we have small children (Under 6) and could imagine that if we took them to the vacation home, it may be challenging due to a lot of breakables in the home (accidents happen) so I am not sure that we would recommend bringing really little ones however when ours get older, it seems like it would be fun. One more tip: we did not get any phone reception at all- so if you need to call home to check on your kids like we did, invest in a $5 calling card because the phones are only for local use in the home. This place was so beautiful- we highly recommend to any one wanting a nice visit to Mendocino County in a nice cozy environment. The drive to Mendocino is only about 30 minutes and the drive to Point Arena is only about 10. Donna was absolutely accommodating in every way and the process was very simple. It was our first vacation rental on VRBO so we were unsure how it all worked but she made it much more comfortable. Cant wait to come back again!
My family and I rented Donna's home for our Thanksgiving holiday this year. We all agreed that this was the best Thanksgiving in years. The accommodations were first rate with plenty of clean linens, cookware, glassware and all the amenities to make our holiday dinner a success.
The setting is unbelievably beautiful with views of the Point Arena Lighthouse and the breathtaking Mendocino Coast. There is easy access to a private beach with tide pools, creative driftwood structures and a wide expanse of sand -- the perfect place to sample the Alexander Valley wine we picked up on the way in.
My only hesitation in providing such a high rating is that the property might not be available the next time we want to stay. ;)
We had a great stay. We were at the end of the annual Perseid Meteor shower and happened to be in the hot tub when the most incredible meteor blazed across the sky with flames visible and then burst into 2 pieces and left a smoke trail. Absolutely breathtaking!!!
I felt privileged to be able to stay here-what a history! The accommodations were excellent. I loved the linen bag idea. It was easy to keep track of what was used and then simply clean and put back into bag at the end of stay-very straightforward!
Although I don't drink we did find a taproom down in Point Arena Harbor which seemed to have a great beer selection and the fish and chips were good too.
We were able to do some sea kayaking and the area near Van Damme state park offers some world class sea kayaking. Rentals available on the beach there. We had perfect weather and loved watching the fog bank play tag with Point Arena and the nearby beach was beautiful.

Upon our arrival over the New Year's weekend, a deer came to greet us and more returned several times. My wife, daughter, granddaughter, and I stayed for three nights, which wasn't long enough and the time went by way too fast. We were blessed with beautiful sunny weather, as we thoroughly enjoyed the views from the dining room, the fabulous deck, and even the kitchen. The beds were comfortable and there was a well stocked kitchen and plenty of movies to watch at night with the ambiance of a gas fireplace. My wife and I enjoyed an EARLY morning (4:00am) hot tub under a beautiful starry sky with the sounds of the surf below. The actual beach at Irish Beach was close by and a good private beach to visit.
We drove south a few minutes to the Point Arena Lighthouse several times, first to enjoy the sunrise and go for a walk, next to visit and tour the lighthouse and museum, and on a third visit to eat at Rollerbay Cafe for great fish n' chips and more walking. We also visited the more touristy Mendocino and also Elk to the north. New Year's Eve at the Arena Theatre in the quiet and picturesque town of Point Arena was really fun.
We had a great visit, only as I said, it went by way too fast. During our stay we were already talking about going back again for another and longer visit.
We have been staying at St Claire House almost every year since 1993. We love it. So quit and serene. We stayed the last week of September and even though the weather was foggy we stayed at the house and read and lounged. We enjoyed the deer family that came by every morning and evening and even saw a very small fox. It is so nice to have a beautiful place like this to go and relax and get away from the every day hustle and bustle of everyday. We remarked several times while we were there how lucky we are to live close and have access to a place like St Claire house.
Our family of four enjoyed the last three days of July in the St. Claire House. Everything was as presented and the views are spectacular. We had a full moon two nights and the reflection off the deep blue Pacific was unforgetable.
The only downside to our stay was due to our own lack of knowledge about the area -- it's a little isolated. It's probably a 10-mile drive in either direction to restaurants and the roads are beautiful but slow-going if you aren't used to the twists and turns in Mendocino County. Not a huge problem but something to keep in mind when planning day trips and outings from St. Claire House because you have to budget more driving time.

Full refund if cancelled more than 10 days before arrival date. Within 10 days of scheduled arrival any prepayment of rental cost will be fully refunded, however, the deposit will be forfeited if we are unable to re-rent the property.

The owner will forward a reservation form. There is a security/cleaning of $150 for 2-4 night stay and $300 for 5+night stay, to be paid by check and held uncashed until after your departure, then returned marked "VOID" if the house is left clean and undamaged. Full payment including tax is due 10 days before arrival to allow time to mail out the map, instructions and key access information.
