About Durango Steele

I am an East Coast girl from Connecticut who moved to Colorado with my family when my father was employed by IBM in Boulder 1966! I graduated from Estes Park High School and continue to love this community and the beauty of Rocky Mountain National Park. I realize what a great privilege it is to be located next to one our our nation's treasured parks!

Durango Steele purchased this house in 1996

Why Durango Steele chose Estes Park

My husband, Mark, and I lived in Santa Barbara for many years. While enjoying our time there, our attention was drawn to the Craftsman Style of Architecture including Prairie Style and the California Bungalow. We fell in love with this style of home and knew that someday we would find a property suitable for us to restore with the artistic integrity of this form of architecture. We knew it was Rockhedge as soon as we visited the home. Built in 1921 and situated on a beautiful lot; this was the perfect place for us to restore in the Colorado Rocky Mountains.

What makes this house unique

This home is warm and welcoming, thoughtfully renovated with attention to detail.

This is a favorite quote of our's by Frank Lloyd Wright:

'A Building should appear to grow easily from its site and be shaped to harmonize with its surroundings if nature is manifest there, and if not, try to make it as quiet, substantial, and organic as she would have done were the opportunity hers.'

We hope that you feel at home here. We are happy to share our interpretation of the Arts & Crafts architecture and philosophy with you. We know that you will enjoy the natural surroundings of this home, the easy access to the shops and restaurants of our charming mountain village and our spectacular Rocky Mountain National Park!

Welcome to Rockhedge.

Excellent Location and a stunning home!

  • 5 of 5

Rockhedge was a perfect home! Close to town, Stanley Hotel, and local grocery store for supplies but yet very private feel and setting. The owners were great to work with and very responsive. We would highly recommend this home for your visit to Estes Park!

A RELAXING OASIS AFTER OUTDOOR ADVENTURES

  • 5 of 5

Sometimes you wonder if the pictures are enhanced to make the property appear better than it actually is. Not the case with this rental. We were amazed at the clean, organized home that we walked into. Every need was anticipated with notes all over the house with instructions on how to make the most of your stay. We went out hiking during the day and came home to a gourmet kitchen to cook in, and a fireplace ready to fire up. The furniture was comfortable, the beds were perfect. In a basket in the living room there were brochures for local restaurants, and points of interest. The owner was available in town if we needed anything, and was prompt to reply to a text message that I sent. Our party of 6 included 4 adults, and two children ages 12,and 5. Outside on the property there are wonderful seating areas to enjoy the outdoors, two different grills and rocks that the kids enjoyed climbing. The house is located a 5 minute walk from downtown. Close enough to enjoy, but far enough that there is no highway noise or steady streams of people. We will be back for sure!

Wonderful home for a Family Vacation!!

  • 5 of 5

This home will overwhelm you by it's beauty and location. It's in such a perfect spot near shopping streets, grocery markets, pharmacy/ liquor stores and restaurants. So therefore no need for a vehicle because the walk is enjoyable from all the views around. Inside this home will leave you breathless from the wonderful details and paintings. The lighting is fantastic and it's put in every right place around the home. The fireplace is so great that it will bring the family and love ones together at night. There is no need to go out and eat because the kitchen is so awesome and big with all the right necessities. Every night my family and I will cook and have dinner together because it was such a lovely warm feeling that we wouldn't want to go out. The outside patio was beautiful to wake up and have morning coffee or hot tea before you start your day. The neighbors are nice and friendly with warm welcomes that you feel right at home or even better. There is easy access in and out of the home for disabilities or people who are older. Both bathrooms are on the first floor so no need to worry about going upstairs. The water gets nice and hot right away to have an enjoyable shower or bath. Shower heads are moveable and long with somewhere to sit down. So for people who need to sit and not stand for showers it will accommodate perfectly. There is just so much love and care put in this home that you wouldn't want to go or sleep anywhere else on your vacation. The beds are comfortable with enough pillows and blankets. I will highly recommend staying and experience this lovely home because it's worth it. Thank you Durango and Mark for being such great people and opening your home to my family and I. You guys put a lot of work into this home and it really shows. This made such a great experience for my family and I that it wouldn't have been the same without you. Thank for meeting everyone the first day and making us feel right at home. I am looking forward to staying again as we'll as my family in the near future. Take care and bless both of you!

Beautiful Retreat

  • 4 of 5

The home is perfectly furnished for our group of three single women. Mark, the owner greeted us on arrival and made certain all of our questions were answered. For our convenience, we brought all of our meals and found an abundantly stocked kitchen and more than enough towels & bedding. Beautiful scenery outside the home. Lots of picture opportunities.

Worth noting - there is only one shower in the home and the water pressure was weak. Also, the 3rd bedroom upstairs is an open loft.

Terrific location, clean and comfortable.

  • 5 of 5

A group of five old friends had a wonderful stay at Rockhedge a beautiful, well maintained vacation home in a great location. The property was clean, comfortable and well stocked. The owner, Mark was very hospitable meeting us at the cabin, showing us around and making us feel welcome and at home before leaving us to enjoy our time. During our stay we enjoyed downtown Estes Park, a visit to the historic Stanley Hotel and a full day of hiking in Rocky Mountain National Park. Would stay here again!
