About Durango Steele

I am an East Coast girl from Connecticut who moved to Colorado with my family when my father was employed by IBM in Boulder 1966! I graduated from Estes Park High School and continue to love this community and the beauty of Rocky Mountain National Park. I realize what a great privilege it is to be located next to one our our nation's treasured parks!

Durango Steele purchased this house in 1996

Why Durango Steele chose Estes Park

My husband, Mark, and I lived in Santa Barbara for many years. While enjoying our time there, our attention was drawn to the Craftsman Style of Architecture including Prairie Style and the California Bungalow. We fell in love with this style of home and knew that someday we would find a property suitable for us to restore with the artistic integrity of this form of architecture. We knew it was Rockhedge as soon as we visited the home. Built in 1921 and situated on a beautiful lot; this was the perfect place for us to restore in the Colorado Rocky Mountains.

What makes this house unique

This home is warm and welcoming, thoughtfully renovated with attention to detail.

This is a favorite quote of our's by Frank Lloyd Wright:

'A Building should appear to grow easily from its site and be shaped to harmonize with its surroundings if nature is manifest there, and if not, try to make it as quiet, substantial, and organic as she would have done were the opportunity hers.'

We hope that you feel at home here. We are happy to share our interpretation of the Arts & Crafts architecture and philosophy with you. We know that you will enjoy the natural surroundings of this home, the easy access to the shops and restaurants of our charming mountain village and our spectacular Rocky Mountain National Park!

Welcome to Rockhedge.

Terrific location, clean and comfortable.

A group of five old friends had a wonderful stay at Rockhedge a beautiful, well maintained vacation home in a great location. The property was clean, comfortable and well stocked. The owner, Mark was very hospitable meeting us at the cabin, showing us around and making us feel welcome and at home before leaving us to enjoy our time. During our stay we enjoyed downtown Estes Park, a visit to the historic Stanley Hotel and a full day of hiking in Rocky Mountain National Park. Would stay here again!

Beautiful "Cabin" in a Perfect Location!

Beautiful "Cabin" in a Perfect Location!

My wife and I, two grown daughters, and their husbands spent nine days at Rockhedge, Estes Park, and Rocky Mountain National Park.

The home is beautiful! Felt "at home" immediately, with all the warmth of the woodwork and decor.

We had no problems with Rockhedge at all. Older homes have some "quirks" - the little things that baffle you for a moment, but you get used to them. In many ways it adds to the charm. Example: The knobs in the shower turn on/off in opposite directions. One of the kitchen sinks has cold water on the left and hot water on the right. Not a big deal. You just have to get used to it.

The home was great for six adults. One thing to note, the loft is a true loft and there is no door between it and the living room downstairs. It didn't bother us, but some people may want to know there are TWO bedrooms with doors and ONE loft bedroom. Nobody complained about the beds. Everyone was comfortable. We used the gas grill extensively, but had no issues with the stove when we used it.

Ease to getting to downtown Estes Park is great. Proximity to grocery stores, coffee shops, etc. is wonderful. And it's a quick trip through downtown to be on your way to Beaver Meadows in Rocky Mountain National Park (or there are hiking trails to Gem Lake, Twin Owls and Cow Creek just down the road without going through town!

I have a family of hikers that like to eat well. This was a great place to call "home base" and allowed us to get everywhere we wanted to go easily and to have all the comforts we wanted when we returned.

Fantastic Rocky Mountain Treasure

  • 5 of 5
I reviewed this property yesterday and realized I didn't give it the five star rating it deserves. My bad, I should have double clicked before I hit send. It was fantastic.

The house accommodated our family of 4 small kids

  • 4 of 5
I loved the house and the location. The large boulders on the property provided great entertainment for the kids while we watched them from the patio. The grill and second patio off the dinning area was perfect for our family gathering of 16. A fast drive to all the hiking and only a short walk of 0.7 mile to Starbucks. The negative points were small but disappointing: stove taking 2 hours to heat up, not being able to fill the tub( yes,I read the directions. Ceiling fan was noisy. With that being said the house still was over the top enjoyable and we will definitely be back.

Owner's Response: Dear Rockhedge Guest,

We pride ourselves in the care and maintenance of our 1921 historic home. We too are disappointed that we were not informed about the issues with our Viking stove, the tub and our vintage ceiling fans, during your stay. We have a team of local maintenance people that are prompt to respond to any issue that our guests inform us of.

In the seven years of sharing our home with guests this is the first time we have received less than a Five Star rating, and yes, we take it personal. We very much wish you would have given us the opportunity to fix the the things that were disappointing to you during your stay.

Sincerely,
Your Hosts,
Durango & Mark
