I am an East Coast girl from Connecticut who moved to Colorado with my family when my father was employed by IBM in Boulder 1966! I graduated from Estes Park High School and continue to love this community and the beauty of Rocky Mountain National Park. I realize what a great privilege it is to be located next to one our our nation's treasured parks!

Durango Steele purchased this house in 1996

My husband, Mark, and I lived in Santa Barbara for many years. While enjoying our time there, our attention was drawn to the Craftsman Style of Architecture including Prairie Style and the California Bungalow. We fell in love with this style of home and knew that someday we would find a property suitable for us to restore with the artistic integrity of this form of architecture. We knew it was Rockhedge as soon as we visited the home. Built in 1921 and situated on a beautiful lot; this was the perfect place for us to restore in the Colorado Rocky Mountains.

This home is warm and welcoming, thoughtfully renovated with attention to detail.

This is a favorite quote of our's by Frank Lloyd Wright:

'A Building should appear to grow easily from its site and be shaped to harmonize with its surroundings if nature is manifest there, and if not, try to make it as quiet, substantial, and organic as she would have done were the opportunity hers.'

We hope that you feel at home here. We are happy to share our interpretation of the Arts & Crafts architecture and philosophy with you. We know that you will enjoy the natural surroundings of this home, the easy access to the shops and restaurants of our charming mountain village and our spectacular Rocky Mountain National Park!

Welcome to Rockhedge.

Wonderful experience at Rockhedge

I could not be more pleased with our experience at Rockhedge. The home was everything we expected and more. If you want to stay inside, there are comfortable spaces to read, watch the outdoors, or create in the fabulous kitchen. If you are more of an outside person, the yard around the home is beautiful, and hiking and shopping are only a few minutes away by car or foot. Access to the park is only a few minutes beyond town. I would have to say that my favorite part of our time at Rockhedge was watching my three-year-old grandson enjoy the wildlife. He became an expert at finding the elk and deer around the property, and never lost his enthusiasm even after several days.

Rockhedge was Great

Staying at Rockhedge was everything and more than we expected. We had a cousin's reunion there and it was a perfect place to gather and was very comfortable for everyone. We had elk come walking down the road, deer resting in the side yard and lots of colorful & beautiful birds on the feeders. We all just had a great vacation. Rockhedge will become our home-away-from home on our next trip to Estes Park.

My 3 sisters and I tremendously enjoyed our stay at Rockhedge. The house was spotless, beautifully and comfortably decorated, spacious, and well-equipped (especially the kitchen). We were warmly welcomed and received a thorough tour of the house and grounds. The scenery was beautiful as well.

This is a great location for exploring Rocky Mountain National Park and Estes Park!

This was our second summer to stay at Rockhedge with our family. It is such a magical place--in town with plenty of open space around it. The house itself is roomy and very comfortable. We all agree it is absolutely the best vacation home we have ever enjoyed and we have stayed in many.

Beauty and Charm

My husband, son, daughter in law and grandson stayed in this lovely house and enjoyed every second!
It is more lovely that the photos on the web-site depict. We were greeted by Durango, who took the time to walk us through the ammenities and nuances of the house. She was great to work with in every aspect. We enjoyed spending time in the surrounding area during the day and relaxing in the evening around the fire. Wildlife was observed on this property and an abundance of it in the surrounding area as well. (No bears however.)
I would strongly recommend this to anyone who appreciates warmth and charm in vacation home.
