I am an East Coast girl from Connecticut who moved to Colorado with my family when my father was employed by IBM in Boulder 1966! I graduated from Estes Park High School and continue to love this community and the beauty of Rocky Mountain National Park. I realize what a great privilege it is to be located next to one our our nation's treasured parks!

Durango Steele purchased this house in 1996

My husband, Mark, and I lived in Santa Barbara for many years. While enjoying our time there, our attention was drawn to the Craftsman Style of Architecture including Prairie Style and the California Bungalow. We fell in love with this style of home and knew that someday we would find a property suitable for us to restore with the artistic integrity of this form of architecture. We knew it was Rockhedge as soon as we visited the home. Built in 1921 and situated on a beautiful lot; this was the perfect place for us to restore in the Colorado Rocky Mountains.

This home is warm and welcoming, thoughtfully renovated with attention to detail.

This is a favorite quote of our's by Frank Lloyd Wright:

'A Building should appear to grow easily from its site and be shaped to harmonize with its surroundings if nature is manifest there, and if not, try to make it as quiet, substantial, and organic as she would have done were the opportunity hers.'

We hope that you feel at home here. We are happy to share our interpretation of the Arts & Crafts architecture and philosophy with you. We know that you will enjoy the natural surroundings of this home, the easy access to the shops and restaurants of our charming mountain village and our spectacular Rocky Mountain National Park!

Welcome to Rockhedge.

BEAUTIFUL AND PRIVATE RETREAT

  • 5 of 5
We arrived at Estes Park on a Monday and while waiting for Rockhedge to be ready we took a drive through the immensely crowded village and quickly knew we would not be going back there. Being from Southern California we had our doubts as to whether we picked the right vacation destination to "get away from it all". Rockhedge proved to be the perfect answer to our worries. The long list of highlights of this property include: very private lot, beautiful craftsman style home, comfortable furniture, gourmet kitchen, quiet, and of course the wildlife viewing! We stayed at the house and relaxed the entire time we were not visiting RMNP and cooked most of our meals in the well stocked kitchen. Rockhedge ended up being a great choice for people like us looking to escape crowds, and of course it is within walking distance to the village if you choose to go.

FEELS LIKE HOME AWAY FROM HOME

  • 5 of 5
This is the second time that we have stayed at Rockhedge because it feels like home to us. It is a perfect combination of luxury and familiarity; it's comfortable but also has spectacular features that make it a real treat. Even with all of the great amenities inside the house (fireplace, gourmet kitchen, great windows/views), my favorite place is sitting outside on the patio, enjoying food and the company of friends in the outdoors.

WONDERFUL EXPERIENCE AT ROCKHEDGE

  • 5 of 5
I could not be more pleased with our experience at Rockhedge. The home was everything we expected and more. If you want to stay inside, there are comfortable spaces to read, watch the outdoors, or create in the fabulous kitchen. If you are more of an outside person, the yard around the home is beautiful, and hiking and shopping are only a few minutes away by car or foot. Access to the park is only a few minutes beyond town. I would have to say that my favorite part of our time at Rockhedge was watching my three-year-old grandson enjoy the wildlife. He became an expert at finding the elk and deer around the property, and never lost his enthusiasm even after several days.

ROCKHEDGE WAS GREAT

  • 5 of 5
Staying at Rockhedge was everything and more than we expected. We had a cousin's reunion there and it was a perfect place to gather and was very comfortable for everyone. We had elk come walking down the road, deer resting in the side yard and lots of colorful & beautiful birds on the feeders. We all just had a great vacation. Rockhedge will become our home-away-from home on our next trip to Estes Park.

HEAVEN ON EARTH

  • 5 of 5
My 3 sisters and I tremendously enjoyed our stay at Rockhedge. The house was spotless, beautifully and comfortably decorated, spacious, and well-equipped (especially the kitchen). We were warmly welcomed and received a thorough tour of the house and grounds. The scenery was beautiful as well.

This is a great location for exploring Rocky Mountain National Park and Estes Park!
