Sunny Shade is the perfect setting for your family reunion, wedding guests, or get-together with close friends. With the main house and the cottage you can have your privacy and at the same time be part of the crowd. For years our guests have been returning to relax, reconnect and create special memories.
Sunny Shade is comprised of the main house and a detached cottage that share a common lakefront. Sunny Maple is the house on the lake with 3 bed rooms and Shady Oak is the cottage up on the hill with 3 bedrooms. Both are meticulously maintained and tastefully decorated.
When not wine touring or sight seeing in the beautiful region surrounding us the best part of your day will probably be spent outdoors. On the waterfront you will have a fun time with the variety of non-motorized watercraft or you may want to fish, swim, boat or sunbathe on or from our dock, lakeside patio or swim platform. The little ones will love the sandbox, the play house the outdoor toys and the shallow beach. Rinse off under the refreshing outdoor shower on the side deck.
For those seeking quiet escape, there are many places to sneak away to enjoy a cup of coffee, a glass of wine or take a nap. The upper deck at Sunny Maple with access from the upstairs bedroom floor is private and quiet. The perfect spot to enjoy a leisurely breakfast or sunbathe. The side deck off the kitchen is a fabulous place to enjoy a meal or a cold beverage.
Shady Oak has it own private partially covered deck with a stunning view of the lake and lots of space for hanging out. Great for outdoor entertaining, rain or shine, or cozy up in the comfy love seat with your favorite book.
The spacious partially covered lakeside patio at Sunny Maple is a great place to hang out at all times of the day - even on rainy days. Whether it is getting up early and having coffee on the patio while watching the sun light-up the shore across the lake and reflect off the mirror-like water or relaxing in one of the chaise lounges in the early evening taking in the sunset - breathtaking. The calm nights at the lake are a real treat either at the fire pit or around the cheminea.
On that rare rainy day the downstairs open floor plan in Sunny Maple provides a perfect spot for entertaining should you decide to be inside. Enjoy a drink at the breakfast bar while socializing with the cook of the day or sit back in the corner couch while watching a movie on the big flat-screen TV, playing a board game or reading a good book.
Whatever your longings and wishes are we have done everything in our power to ensure that you have the best possible time in your home away from home. Welcome to Sunny Shade.

Verner and I (Anja) moved to the US 21 years ago with our sons, Phillip and Gustav, 6 and 2 at the time, from Denmark. We absolutely love it here. In 2006 we decided to find a retreat where the entire family along with their families and friends could gather and relax and have fun. We found it in Sunny Maple and the adjacent Shady Oak, also combined known as Sunny Shade. This place is just too beautiful not to be shared with others when we're not able to use it ourselves so we decided to make it available for you.
Our very good friends have vacation homes at Keuka Lake and they invited us to come and spend some time with them and their families and .... we were totally hooked! We loved it instantly and decided to look around for our own paradise on Keuka Lake - and we found it! Welcome to Sunny Shade.
Here is a bunch of things that we really cherish when we stay at Sunny Shade: 1. Get up early to watch the sun light-up the shore across the lake and reflect off the mirror-like water – breathtaking! 2. Enjoy lunch and views of the bluff from one of the many terraces at the Switzerland Inn! 3. Make yummy s’mores over an open campfire in the firepot near the beach. 4. Enjoy a peaceful kayak ride early in the morning before the lake gets busy. 5. Explore the many fine vineyards surrounding Keuka Lake, and take in the stunning views of the countryside and lake! 6. Walk down the road to the “Olney Place” and have a delicious breakfast or lunch sandwich on the front porch. Make sure you get a hand-scooped ice cream cone to enjoy on your journey back. 7. Visit the quaint town of Hammondsport at the south end of the lake by boat or car. Stroll around town and check out the unique stores and galleries, dine at the Village Tavern. 8. Have a wonderful dinner at Snug Harbor on the west side of the lake. 9. Have a bottle of wine in the middle of the lake at sunset! 10. Rent a bike and ride along the Outlet Trail from Penn Yan to Dresden by Seneca Lake. Enjoy a picnic lunch overlooking the lake and/or waterfalls along the way. 11. Stroll, jog, bike and/or rollerblade along our quiet, tree-lined lane. Admire the beauty and variety of architecture in the homes along the lake. 12. And don’t forget to visit the Windmill Market on Route 14A. It's a great place to people-watch and buy all sorts of things that you don’t really need, but can’t live without! There’s plenty of food – if you are in a really decadent mood, have a “Spiral” potato which is loaded with calories, carbs and grease, but definitely worth the indulgence.
