My husband and I are retired and interested in traveling and volunteering in other countries. We have raised our family here but now find that we have the ability to wander farther afield. Our son,who is a graduate student at CAL, lives on the property and is your host, on our behalf.

The Owner purchased this apartment in 1999

We chose to buy and live in the San Francisco Bay Area for its diversity of geography, people, theater, art and music. We have loved living in Berkeley for the past 30 years. We offer part of our home so others may enjoy the temperate climate and wonderful opportunities to explore California from this unique location.

It is a quiet here, above the city, but within walking distance to many fine restaurants and shops as well as public transportation to San Francisco and beyond. We also love the southwest orientation of the house allowing us to enjoy the sun as it rises and sets with glorious views. Halfway up the hill between Tilden Park and the commercial area we enjoy great views, sunsets and walks.

Beautiful Apartment - Stunning Views!

This home was not only beautiful in every way but so comfortable, immaculate and well-equipped. The views in the living room & from the deck are stunning. The owners were so gracious, checking-in to make sure we were comfortable and had everything we needed.
I thought I lost my Kindle but got an email a few days later from Elizabeth, the owner saying she found it and shipped it back to me in NY. It would have been so easy have kept it but that's not the kind of people they are. We would consider ourselves very fortunate if this property was available the next time we come to Berkeley.

A Five-Star Berkeley Stay

  • 5 of 5
  • Submitted: Mar 5, 2014

By now it should be clear from the photos and reviews what an outstanding property this is. We can only agree with the many five-star ratings that have already been posted. An eclectic library of books left by previous renters adds to the feeling of home as does an outstanding puzzle collection and the fully equipped kitchen that lacks nothing if you should decide to cook rather than take advantage of the diverse dining opportunities in Berkeley. A perfect tasteful balance is struck between a rental property with so many personal effects that you feel you are staying in someone else's home and a property that has been stripped of all personal effects and feels like a corporate stay.

Rather than repeat all the positive things others have said, I will echo a word of caution to those with large cars that are unfamiliar with the undefined rules of the road when driving on narrow two-way streets with parking that frequently only allow one car to pass. For those who have done a lot of driving in Europe, this is nothing unusual. The good thing is that it is very rare to ever meet an oncoming car. There is very little traffic on these streets. Residents are quick to pull over into the parking lane to allow you to pass as you should when the situation seems to require it. It is best not to always follow a GPS since they calculate the shortest or quickest route and will take you on many more narrow winding streets than necessary. It is possible to take some of the larger main roads including Marin Avenue that get you close without following the smaller streets. If your stay is a longer one, it is worth learning where the main roads are. There probably should be more concave mirrors strategically placed on poles, but there is an argument they lead to more reckless driving and it is better just to proceed at low speed cautiously around blind bends. None of this is meant to detract from the property which has so many beautiful features to recommend it. Just be cautious if your driving skills are poor. Even a minor fender bender could spoil what should otherwise be a grand stay.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your review. Your point is well taken. As residents we are accustomed to driving in the hills but guests may not be. I think the solution is to not be in hurry so that caution is always foremost. It is possible to keep to the larger roads until the last three blocks. I will post simpler directions for guests from the two airports as it is true that GPS routes use smaller roads.

Owners description and other reviews say it all. Hooked on the place and come back every year. Favorite pastime is picking up bread at the Cheese Board in the Gourmet Ghetto each morning for breakfast on the terrace overlooking the bay.

Very tasteful, well equipped, comfortable, private, beautiful views; all one could ever want in the Berkeley Hills. My wife and I have returned each fall for several years, and look forward to returning for many more. Definitely one of VRBO's best.

A feast for the senses

What a wonderful place. The home is very comfortable and the view of the bay and the lights of SF at night from the large front windows is just breathtaking. The terrace was sunny for most of the day with lovely reclining chairs and the scent from the surrounding plants and trees was like nothing I've ever experienced. It's all a feast for the senses and makes for a wonderful retreat.

I do agree with another visitor who said it's best to approach the house for the first time in daylight as finding it and parking in the driveway can be a bit tricky at first. I was there alone for most of my 10-day stay, exploring the surrounding area by car during the day and enjoying the house in the late afternoons/evenings.

When I travel, I like to be within walking distance of restaurants for dinner, and evening activities. Though there are hidden stairways leading down to the town, they're quite steep and long, and it's a mile then from the stairs to the nearest restaurants so I had to use the car at night. But, except for that detail, it was a lovely apartment that felt like a very private house. I'd highly recommend it.
