To say the Boxwood Bungalow is like a home away from home is an understatement. From the minute I set foot in the charming brick home, I felt like I was visiting the home of a friend, rather than that of a complete stranger. It was a shame we had so many things to do in Charlottesville, because I would have been content sitting out on the wide front porch with a glass of Virginia wine. As it was, we were just a short walk away from the Downtown Mall and picked up the free trolley to get us to Grounds (although in truth, we could have walked it). We ran into the owner, who couldn't have been nicer. In addition to recommending some great restaurants (Zocalo, I will return for another round of Mexican chocolate bread pudding!), she gave us directions to a fantastic hike up the Saunders Trail that ended at the Monticello Visitors Center. It was a beautiful hike, but all uphill! I felt like I got to work off some of the bread pudding, at least, while taking in some beautiful Albemarle County scenery.
After seeing all the sights for the day, it was so much nicer to return to the bungalow than a hotel. I was so happy to hit the shower - and a great shower it was! Perfect water pressure, big plush towels, and lovely fragrant soaps washed the day away. By the time I climbed into the beautiful antique bed with the super soft sheets, I was pleasantly numb and ready for a good night's sleep. Goldillocks would have agreed that the mattress was just right, and I slept like a baby. In the morning, we were thankful to have a coffee maker handy, although we also walked up the street and enjoyed a coffee at La Taza.
I can't say enough positive things about our stay at the Boxwood Bungalow. It's fastidiously clean, beautifully decorated, ideally situated, and Janice seems to anticipate anything her guests might need. I only wish we could have stayed longer! As long as this place is available, I'll never stay anywhere else in Charlottesville, that's for sure.
