My family and I spent one dreamy week at this castle. We were a group of 8. My husband and I and our 3 children (7, 11, 15), my parents and my best friend. We stayed at the St. George and were blown away by everything. We arrived late but were met with open arms by Elizabeth Marshall (literally) who then offered to open the pool for our children even though it was 10pm. The rooms were lovely with stone castle walls and antique but lovely and comfortable furniture. The grounds were impeccable and my 7 year old loved to feed the coy in the ponds daily with Marshall. The forest trails on the property were breathtaking. Galway and the Renaissance district are only a 10 minute drive and we loved shopping and enjoying local artists there. That's where we discovered the band Keywest ...future U2. And enjoyed amazing baked potato meals at the Coach Potato. We even were invited to a tea party with Marshall and George where we got a tour of the main house...absolutely our best travel experience ever. We travel several times a year and always to different countries. But I can honestly say my family has not stopped talking about our trip to Ireland and we can't wait to go back again. We vacationed there summer of 2011. I am on the VRBO site today looking at this property again because my children keep begging to go back. Thank you Marshall and George!!! We love you both:)
We felt like the property was a bit shabby compared to the photos. Surrounding grounds were beautiful. Tons of midges (biting bugs) outside and inside at night bc there are no screens on the windows. Upon arrival the owner told us she had a wedding there the week before and was still cleaning up after the wedding. There were dead flower arrangements sitting around, beer cans and piles of trash had not yet been collected in main courtyard. Bedrooms and baths were adaquate but bed linens were really old and felt gruubby, some thought they had bedbugs. Our room had a old grubby twin bedspread turned sideways to fit a queen bed (sort of fit!) Living rooms were really shabby, furniture felt old and musty not charming! No maid service all week left very messy accomodations. Pool was not worth mentioning and only available from 9 to 6 pm but then we had to ask for it to be opened during those times. Tennis courts were dirty upon arrival and not cleaned until late Monday night (10 pm) So we missed 2 days of tennis. Courts were really old and shabby and should not be highlighted as a perk to the property. As I mentioned the courts were being cleaned until 10 pm by power washing which was connected to the same power circuit as the kitchen and the circuit kept cutting out as we tried to cook dinner. Internet was unavailable most of the time, we had to request the owner turn it on for our use. Very frustrading because we had to be on her schedule for internet use. And then it only was accessable from a window seat in the kitchen of one of the wings. Owner was difficult to reach. We hired a cook who was terrific but the owner interfered with her plans and cause problems for her and us. Castle was not available bc the owner told us it was under construction, the real reason was she was living there. Over all we felt like our owner was in over her head and needed to hire a house manager and cleaning staff to come daily. I would not reccomend this property to anyone.
