About The Owner

I lived and worked in Santa Fe for 17 years and found my career as an artist there. Santa Fe has a charm and 'vibe' that is addictive - one of the most artistically stimulating places in the world - the natural beauty, native Hispanic and Native American heritage, and lovely people permeate this place with positive, creative energy. I bought this house and renovated it thinking I would move back to Santa Fe permanently. Although my work has taken me elsewhere, this house is a treasure and I love to share it. My primary work has been the restoration and renovation of the interiors of several historic churches including the Cathedral Basilica of St. Francis 1 block from the historic Santa Fe Plaza as well as San Felipe de Neri Catholic Church on the plaza in Old Town Albuquerque. Google John Alan Design to see some of this work.

A slice of heaven

  • 5 of 5

You can never get too much of a good thing--so we'll be returning to John's artist retreat for the third time! The home is graciously appointed, roomy and comfortable. The courtyard and fountain are perfect for an end-of-day martini and the neighborhood is quiet and convenient. We like early morning walks on the hike and bike trail around the corner and breakfast at the Counter Culture Cafe at the end of our walk. If I feel like cooking, the kitchen is well equipped and Whole Foods and Trader Joe's are nearby. The farmers' market is a 15 minute walk to the Railyard. Rose, who cares for the property, is delightful and attentive. All in all, a perfect base from which to explore Santa Fe and the surrounding area.

A gem

  • 5 of 5

We had the pleasure of staying at “Santa Fe Artist’s Retreat” for three weeks in March. The property is meticulously maintained, beautifully designed, and provided a spacious, relaxed, and lovely “home away from home” for us. We particularly appreciated all of the original art in this lovely home. The walks to both the Railyard District and the Plaza are easily accomplished by persons with even a moderate degree of fitness. It is a short and easy walk to busy St. Francis Drive and then the route is very pleasant providing innumerable stops for sightseeing, picture taking, shopping, and cafe or coffee breaks. Both the owner and manager provided prompt and helpful responses to any and all questions. One feels well taken care of by both of them. We loved discovering the “Community Yoga Center” just a short and walkable mile away and for those staying for longer than a few days - the usual “box” stores are readily available for household supplies and staples. There are TWO “Whole Food” stores within short distances and we utilized both for groceries and delicious take-out food. Although the weather during our stay was cool enough to preclude us utilizing the patio and garden as much as we had hoped, we can imagine how absolutely delightful it would be to use the patio for relaxation, reading, drinks, or dining during the warmer weather. It is absolutely private with a handsome fence surrounding the property. We would highly recommend this property and would stay there again with no hesitation.

Needs more than just 5 stars!

  • 5 of 5

This was the best vacation rental! We were a party of 3 women with two of us over the age of 55. The walk to the Railyard was easy and if one doesn't have a car (two of us were without for a day), a free shuttle will take you from the Railyard to the Square or even Canyon Road and Museum Hill. If you miss the shuttle on Museum Hill, the bus can take you down to the Square for $.50 or $1.00 depending upon your age. We decided that Thomasitas had the best sopapillas. Everything is within striking distance and very affordable! I can't say enough about the house for it was clean, warm, beautifully appointed and LARGE. Super roomy which gave us privacy if and when we needed it. We thoroughly enjoyed our wine and appetizers in the garden. The beds were comfortable, so comfortable some looked forward to sleeping in. I for one really enjoyed the whirlpool tub. Wow, what a touch. Our stay of 4 days was not enough. Thanks to the manager for her warm welcome and efforts to keep the house in beautiful condition and thanks to the owner for creating such a lovely environment! We're coming back!

NO NEED to look further

  • 5 of 5

This place was better than expected. We stayed for 5 months and didn't want to leave. Warm, beautiful and very very comfortable beds. Super clean. Large rooms. Very close to everything that one would want to do in Santa Fe. Quite and relaxing, with one of the best restaurants around within 3 blocks, became my hang out, "The Tune Up Cafe". Rose who takes care of the place is at your beck'n call , very sweet. I could go on and on, but just try it for yourself. You can walk to Whole Foods, and Trader Joe's for groceries. Wishing it was my place wouldn't hesitate to return. Thank you John for such a wonderful stay. Cheers.

A holiday within a holiday!

  • 5 of 5

This was our first trip to Santa Fe and New Mexico. The condo was easily accessible and close to the center of the attractions. It was spacious, clean, attractive, and very well appointed. We were planning to also visit Taos during our four day stay, but the condo was so nice and relaxing that we ended spending more leisure time in Santa Fe and at the condo. We look forward to coming back and recommending John's lovely property to friends.
