Overview

West Jefferson Cabin Rental Photos and Description

1 bedroom, 2 bathrooms, sleeps 6

Location: Near Fleetwood, Blue Ridge Mountains, North Carolina, USA (Mountain side cabin at 3800 feet near the New River.)

Accommodations: Hand Hued Log Cabin, 1 bedroom, 2 bathroom (sleeps 6) Mulatto Mountain Hideaway, located near Fleetwood, NC, is a great gateway to a memorable mountain vacation in North Carolina's Blue Ridge Mountains. Our cabin was completed in the Spring of 2009, and is ready to welcome you to the Appalachian Mountains for a long weekend, a week, or a month away from it all.

'The Great Escape' offers a large, upper-level master bedroom with a King sized bed, as well as a full bath with a Jacuzzi tub and vanity with granite counter top, and a walk-in cedar closet. An upper level 15'x32' spacious deck provides a four place Hot Tub/Spa, two place swing, glider rocker, picnic table, and LP Gas Grill. A second spacious bathroom is located on the first level with an adjoining wet/dry sauna, and a two car garage. Additional amenities include a gas burning fireplace with a remote, flat screen TV with a blue ray DVD, two Ikea sleeper sofas, two large 5'x6' windows facing to the East and West, two large sliding glass doors leading to a spacious deck with panoramic bird's eye views from 3800 feet of the Blue Ridge Parkway and Grandfather Mountain, a large well equipped kitchen with an eight foot bar, wormy maple cabinets, and granite counter tops, an expandable antique dining table, and front loader washer and dryer. The cabin has a southern pine T&G interior throughout with oak hard wood flooring, and cathedral ceilings in the kitchen/dining area and sitting area where you will be able to feel the warmth

Treat yourself to the casual atmosphere fine dining of Crippen's Country Inn & Restaurant in Blowing Rock. Located in a quaint, Southern, side-street cottage, you will dine on an absolutely artistic creation designed for the season. Don't miss Canyon's Restaurant, the view is priceless!! Canyon's is inconspicuously built on a ridge where you can enjoy a burger, and a million dollar view! You cannot leave Blowing Rock without a stroll downtown where you have to visit Kilwin's homemade ice cream and candy store on Main Street, and let the kids play in the park which is the centerpiece of Main Street.

In Ashe County NC you can enjoy virtually any outdoor activity you can think of. Everything from fishing, biking, hiking, whitewater rafting, to skiing and golf can be found in and around Ashe County. Kayaking the New River is as easy as traveling the short distance to Riverside Kayak and Bike Rentals where they have kayaks, tubes, bikes, and horses. More adventurous activities can be found by rafting the Watauga or Nolichucky Rivers, spelunking the Linville Caverns, or hiking the Linville Gorge, all of which are within 40 minutes of Fleetwood. And, don't miss the most visited destination in NC, Grandfather Mountain, which can usually be seen from the cabin, with the mile high swinging bridge, the animal park, and more. The Blue Ridge Parkway is a favorite spot for many people. You can look out over the many overlooks and see miles and miles of the Blue Ridge Mountains across North Carolina, Virginia, and Tennessee. Enjoy biking, hiking, camping, and many other activities.

About Howard Shipman

Howard lives in the Florida Keys, and has three grown kids. He is a retired Commercial Airline Pilot, and retired USAF Pilot. Howard is a NC native. He enjoys the natural beauty, fresh air, and wildlife of the Blue Ridge Mountains while trekking and biking.

Howard Shipman purchased this cabin in 2009

Why Howard Shipman chose West Jefferson

I was looking to build an all wooden cabin with modern conveniences in a location that provided the best long range mountain views The Smokey Mountains had to offer, yet close to places to go for dining and activities. Southern Ashe County, 20 minutes from Boone, and close to West Jefferson, was the ideal place.

What makes this cabin unique

Privacy, Long Range panoramic views of The Great Smoky Mountains from 3800 feet.

Awesome Property with Mountain Views

  • 5 of 5

Just got back from The Great Escape and I must say this is the best VRBO property we've ever used. We booked on very short notice ( 2 days), and Howard was able to turn everything around and get us all the logistics before we left from home. He was a pleasure to work with and very responsive. Directions were easy to follow and the cabin was just as advertised with spectacular views. We used the hot tub and sauna mutiple times. Having a garage for our vehicle was nice, especially since we got an inch of snow and it was bitterly cold and windy the morning we departed. We were really able to relax and enjoy our time together. What a great place.

Owner's Response: Happy Valentine's Day to you all!! Thank you Don for the fantastic guest comments!! I am so very pleased that you were able to take advantage of both the Spa and the Sauna, and I will have to agree that it is very nice to have your vehicle in a garage this time of year when it is so cold and windy outside. Even if you are not a skier, it is still very nice to just stay inside the warm cabin and watch the weather go by from 3800 feet up. I do hope you guys will be able to return again soon. It was my pleasure making it happen.

Perfect Weekend Getaway!

  • 5 of 5

We spent a long weekend at the Great Escape and enjoyed every minute of it! The house was very accommodating with everything we needed to feel right at home! The breathtaking views overlooking the mountains were so delightful! The many windows throughout the house allowed us to see lots of different views! Watching the sunset while swinging on the porch was a great ending to a wonderful day! We will definitely return to the Great Escape! The owner, Howard, was so easy to work with and very friendly! Thanks for a wonderful weekend and for sharing your home!

Owner's Response: Thank you Ashley and Jason for taking the time to leave your generous remarks regarding your visit to The Great Escape. You guys were the perfect guests!! I am very pleased that you enjoyed the cabin and its amenities, and the view provided by the 3800 feet elevation on the South side of the mountain. As you probably noticed, you can see The Blue Ridge Parkway, and even Grandfather Mountain for the cabin. I hope your visit was the most perfect and memorable babymoon, and I look forward to the three of you visiting again in the very near future. I try to keep everything upfront and as simple as possible with three ways to send the funds, and as quick as possible refund of your Security Deposit. Once my guests have checked out, and we have had time to clean and inspect the cabin, I feel the Security Deposit is now money that I owe my guests, and I want to return it as soon as possible, usually by the same means that my guests have used to send it to me. Best Wishes to you guys, and please return soon.

Incredible! You won't find a better experience.

  • 5 of 5

I can't say enough good things about this cabin and Howard. The website pictures simply can't do the cabin and the view justice. Everything was perfect and by far the best cabin rental experience we've ever had. It's very obvious that Howard takes pride in making the most of his guest's mountain experience. We can't wait to get back again. Thank you again for allowing us the opportunity to stay.

Owner's Response: Thank you Brett and Amanda for finding the time to leave soon comments regarding your three nights stay at The Great Escape. I am very pleased that you enjoyed the cabin, its amenities, and the views that its location provide. As you pointed out, it is difficult to capture the views. The views are constantly changing from day to day, and sometimes even hour by hour. I get the feeling I am looking down on the weather events as they develop, and constantly changing. Sometimes during the Winter Season, it is best just to bring all the supplies you will need for your stay, then just hunker down and enjoy the constantly changing views which can not only be enjoyed from the deck, but also through the two eight foot sliding glass doors, and the two large five foot by six foot windows on the East and West sides of the cabin, or from the Spa while enjoying the 100 degree water. The Sauna is also a great place to thaw out after your ventures outside enjoying the skiing, snow boarding, tubing or just hiking. I do hope you guys will plan to return again in the near future.

A true getwaway

  • 5 of 5

The Great Escape, true to its name, is an incredible cabin to get away from it all! Howard was kind enough to let myself and some friends rent the cabin for four memorable days. Despite renting in Jan, the weather was favorable and the views from the deck were simply unforgettable. We loved relaxing in the hot tub during the day and the sauna after dinner. The cabin is larger than the photos portray and even better furnished. Howard, the owner, is an absolute gentleman and made the process easy from start to finish. Would absolutely recommend to anyone seeking a relaxing, quiet vacation!

Owner's Response: Thank you Param for taking the time to submit your guest comments on your visit to The Great Escape. I am pleased to hear you guys enjoyed the Spa and the Sauna. The Winter time is when I enjoy those two amenities the best as well. The views from the deck and even from inside the cabin are constantly changing from sunrise to after sunset. The weather rolling in and out with an occasional rainbow or the thrills of a thunderstorm, or just the fog in the valleys below giving you the feeling you are looking down on the earth from above. I have had guests who have told me, they rarely left the deck the whole time they were there. It was my pleasure working with you from start to finish. You are a fantastic coordinator.

Owner's Response: Thank you Nathan for taking the time to leave your guest comments regarding your stay at The Great Escape. I am very pleased that you enjoyed your stay, and you are welcome to return any time you need a get-away to The High Country of NC. I have to agree that the views from the deck, and even from inside the cabin, are one of its best assets. The scenery is always changing as different weather moves in and out, and the foliage changes in the Spring and Fall.

In less than 30 minutes travel time, you can cover the 20 miles to Boone, drive 8 more miles to Blowing Rock. West Jefferson is only 10 miles away. The home of Appalachian State University and the Mountaineers (Go ASU!!), Boone offers the casual atmosphere of a college town. Walk the downtown area to find antique shops, restaurants, ice cream shops, and coffee shops. Cafe Portofino & the Tap Room and The Black Cat Burrito are two of our favorite restaurants. Once an old hardware store, Farmer's Hardware has been converted into terrific emporium shops, located on King St in Boone. The converted hardware store to emporium shops are fabulous. Convenient for purchasing Vera Bradley Products, pottery, fashion jewelry, greeting cards, candy, toys...what you don't have!!!! The detail for renovations to the old building is great, and the friendly staff make this a must when visiting downtown Boone. Also, don't miss the Mast General Store across the street.

Other Activities: Boating, kayaking, snowboarding, rock climbing
