West Jefferson Cabin Rental Photos and Description

1 bedroom, 2 bathrooms, sleeps 6

Location: Near Fleetwood, Blue Ridge Mountains, North Carolina, USA (Mountain side cabin at 3800 feet near the New River.)

Accommodations: Hand Hued Log Cabin, 1 bedroom, 2 bathroom (sleeps 6) Mulatto Mountain Hideaway, located near Fleetwood, NC, is a great gateway to a memorable mountain vacation in North Carolina's Blue Ridge Mountains. Our cabin was completed in the Spring of 2009, and is ready to welcome you to the Appalachian Mountains for a long weekend, a week, or a month away from it all.

'The Great Escape' offers a large, upper-level master bedroom with a King sized bed, as well as a full bath with a Jacuzzi tub and vanity with granite counter top, and a walk-in cedar closet. An upper level 15'x32' spacious deck provides a four place Hot Tub/Spa, two place swing, glider rocker, picnic table, and LP Gas Grill. A second spacious bathroom is located on the first level with an adjoining wet/dry sauna, and a two car garage. Additional amenities include a gas burning fireplace with a remote, flat screen TV with a blue ray DVD, two Ikea sleeper sofas, two large 5'x6' windows facing to the East and West, two large sliding glass doors leading to a spacious deck with panoramic bird's eye views from 3800 feet of the Blue Ridge Parkway and Grandfather Mountain, a large well equipped kitchen with an eight foot bar, wormy maple cabinets, and granite counter tops, an expandable antique dining table, and front loader washer and dryer. The cabin has a southern pine T&G interior throughout with oak hard wood flooring, and cathedral ceilings in the kitchen/dining area and sitting area where you will be able to feel the warmth

Treat yourself to the casual atmosphere fine dining of Crippen's Country Inn & Restaurant in Blowing Rock. Located in a quaint, Southern, side-street cottage, you will dine on an absolutely artistic creation designed for the season. Don't miss Canyon's Restaurant, the view is priceless!! Canyon's is inconspicuously built on a ridge where you can enjoy a burger, and a million dollar view! You cannot leave Blowing Rock without a stroll downtown where you have to visit Kilwin's homemade ice cream and candy store on Main Street, and let the kids play in the park which is the centerpiece of Main Street.

In Ashe County NC you can enjoy virtually any outdoor activity you can think of. Everything from fishing, biking, hiking, whitewater rafting, to skiing and golf can be found in and around Ashe County. Kayaking the New River is as easy as traveling the short distance to Riverside Kayak and Bike Rentals where they have kayaks, tubes, bikes, and horses. More adventurous activities can be found by rafting the Watauga or Nolichucky Rivers, spelunking the Linville Caverns, or hiking the Linville Gorge, all of which are within 40 minutes of Fleetwood. And, don't miss the most visited destination in NC, Grandfather Mountain, which can usually be seen from the cabin, with the mile high swinging bridge, the animal park, and more. The Blue Ridge Parkway is a favorite spot for many people. You can look out over the many overlooks and see miles and miles of the Blue Ridge Mountains across North Carolina, Virginia, and Tennessee. Enjoy biking, hiking, camping, and many other activities.

Howard lives in the Florida Keys, and has three grown kids. He is a retired Commercial Airline Pilot, and retired USAF Pilot. Howard is a NC native. He enjoys the natural beauty, fresh air, and wildlife of the Blue Ridge Mountains while trekking and biking.

Howard Shipman purchased this cabin in 2009

I was looking to build an all wooden cabin with modern conveniences in a location that provided the best long range mountain views The Smokey Mountains had to offer, yet close to places to go for dining and activities. Southern Ashe County, 20 minutes from Boone, and close to West Jefferson, was the ideal place.

Privacy, Long Range panoramic views of The Great Smoky Mountains from 3800 feet.

Picturesque Getaway

This was a wonderful getaway and beautiful cabin stay for myself, my husband and our dog. Our weather wasn't the greatest, but we had plenty of fun staying in and relaxing. The kitchen is beautiful and contained everything we needed to cook full meals. We enjoyed the hot tub, the pool table; we also hiked in the woods around the cabin. It was a fabulous, super quite and peaceful escape.
Also, the owner, Howard, was an absolute pleasure to work with. He was very responsive, kind and answered all my questions. He even kept in contact with me diligently through the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays. Thanks Howard!
Owner's Response: Thank you Samantha for taking the time to leave these very nice remarks!!! I am very pleased that you guys and your dog enjoyed your stay at The Great Escape. I do hope you will return soon, perhaps when the weather is a little warmer. There are some nice trails around the cabin, and I'm glad you found some of them. You can actually venture to the top of the mountains where there is a very nice view all the way to West Jefferson. I look forward to hearing from you again in the near future.

The Great Escape Is Just That

At a listed 3000 square feet, The Great Escape is an unusually spacious one bedroom cabin, but after seeing the property I don't doubt the number. But beyond its size, it excels in virtually every other category as well. Howard is a very attentive and easy to work with owner. The facility itself is very well constructed and appointed with high quality furnishings and kitchen appliances. The two car garage with remote controlled doors is a big plus. I might make the room for the master bathroom toilet a little larger as I found it a bit small for someone my size. It's most outstanding feature has to be the deck and the view that goes with it. Simply amazing! We tried to spend most of our daylight hours on the Blue Ridge Parkway and would recommend "The Orchard" for lunch and/or hot apple pie alamode. We used Ingles for groceries and were very impressed with the tremendous size of the facility and selection of items, and it was very clean and brightly lit. A number of previous reviews mentioned the gravel roads leading to the cabin as being rough. If you are driving any average passenger sedan, or SUV and drive slow, and the roads haven't suffered from torrential downpours just prior to your visit, you should not have any problems. My wife and I chose to travel in a Honda S2000 sports car. There were two or three short sections where the gravel was rather rough. Other than that, I had no problems with the roads in spite of the decided non-off-road nature of my vehicle. Howard has emailed me to say that these areas will be addressed and coming from Howard, you can believe that they will be. So there you have it. The Great Escape actually is a great escape.
Owner's Response: Thank you Rick and Melissa for taking the time out of your busy lives to leave these important comments regarding your experiences during your stay at The Great Escape and the Ashe County North Carolina area!!

I appreciate your helpful remarks regarding the gravel roads to the cabin, and the type vehicle you used to make the journey. Those rough areas you mentioned have been addressed, and we have added at least one more culvert since your visit. The road is a constant project in motion, and our little community takes it seriously.

I do hope you will be able to return again in the near future, and I now have a second choice for your. When you find the time go to the websites and view 3648695.

Beyond Relaxing

We were in search of a relaxing getaway before the holiday season began and that is exactly what we found at the Great Escape! With 3 little boys at home, the holiday season can be quite chaotic and busy. We arrived at the Great Escape on Friday and were blown away by the views and the luxurious cabin! The pictures simply don't do it justice! From the deck and every window within the cabin you can see the breathtaking mountainous views! It's absolutely gorgeous!! The cabin itself was amazing! The kitchen is fully stocked with everything you need to prepare your meals. The living room is cozy with the fireplace, the beautiful views, the dining nook, and the tv. The bed is huge and comfy, as well! We absolutely enjoyed every minute of our stay at the Great Escape. Once we arrived...we never left. We had everything we needed and more. We spent time lounging in the hot tub, cooking out steaks on the grill, snuggling up watching movies in the living room, and eating all our meals in the living room nook while taking in the gorgeous views. I couldn't have been happier or more relaxed anywhere else! The Great Escape is just that...a great escape, totally relaxing, and absolutely gorgeous! I highly recommend it to anyone looking to getaway and enjoy some relaxing peace and quiet!

So thank you Howard for opening up your little piece of heaven to us! We so enjoyed ourselves and can't wait to return to the Great Eacape again soon! You were so sweet and easy to talk to and work with! We look forward to talking to you again soon! :-)

Owner's Response: Thank you Amanda for this fantastic review of your get away to The Great Smoky Mountains of North Carolina and The Great Escape. I appreciate your taking the time out of your big "Black Friday" shopping day to communicate your experiences to future guests searching for that perfect place to get away from it all for their honeymoon, birthday, anniversary, or just because they want to enjoy getting close to nature, enjoy the cool fresh air, or this time of year, possibly having some snow to play in. I can appreciate your coming prepared to settle in for the duration, and just enjoying the amenities, and views of the mountains the cabin offers. Sometimes, that is exactly what the "doctor ordered", as they say. The cabin does provide a high degree of solitude and privacy, yet it is only ten miles from downtown West Jefferson with plenty of restaurants, galleries, shops, and of course The Cheese Factory. I do hope you will return when the weather is a little warmer, and you can get out-and-about to enjoy some of the endless activities available in Ashe County and the surrounding areas as far away as Boone, Blowing Rock, Grandfather Mountains, Linville Falls, and many others to numerous to mention. You guys were the perfect guests, and now you qualify for my VIP Return Guests Discount. Thanks again for your patronage, and I look forward to reserving your next stay. I also have a second cabin you may want to check out when you bring the boys. It has thee bedroom, three baths, toy room, Spa, WiFi, cable TV with ESPN, and fireplace. It is on the websites under Jefferson, and is called The Perfect Escape. Come back soon!!!!

Absolute Perfection!!!

The cabin is the perfect place to take a break from the business of everyday life. You can't help but pause and take in the beauty of all God has created... there are no words to describe it. It's such a peaceful setting, I feel lucky to have been able to experience it! It was an anniversary gift for my husband, and it was quite the surprise. He loved everything about it and couldn't tell me enough how it was the best gift he'd ever gotten (other than our children, lol!)... we can't wait to go back! Howard (the owner) is fantastic and accommodating, he couldn't be more helpful. We felt so at home, anything we needed we could find from kitchen utensils to extra blankets. The Great Escape has you covered from A to Z. It was an amazing experience in an extraordinary place with relaxation built right in!!!
Owner's Response: Thank you Danielle for finding the time to leave your comments regarding your stay at The Great Escape. I am very pleased to have been a part of your husband's anniversary surprise, and that he enjoyed the cabin and the solitude that it provides. I appreciate all the kind comments!! I look forward to your next visit, the sooner the better. I hope next time you will have the opportunity to enjoy some of the other many activities available in the area.

Great 25th Anniversary Getaway

The description of the cabin does not begin to do it justice. Rarely these days does something live up to expectations, but truthfully, this cabin exceeded ours. The floorplan was very well thought out. The cabin was spacious and felt very open, warm, and inviting. The cafe table by the picture window looking out at Grandfather Mountain was a wonderful spot to sit and have a cup of coffee in the morning. The 180 degree views are breathtaking and the views are visible from everywhere in the cabin.

From our initial inquiry about the cabin through checkout, the owner had great communication and was quick to answer any questions. We've rented many cabins over the years, but he is by far the best owner we've ever worked with. We have already recommended this cabin to our friends and hope to stay there again ourselves.

Owner's Response: Thank you Steve and Shelly for being such gracious guests at The Great Escape. I truly do appreciate your taking the time to leave your comments, and referring my cabin to your friends and family. I do hope you guys have the opportunity to come back again soon!! It is very nice to hear how well my cabin compares to others you have visited in the area. I designed the floor plan, as you said, to take full advantage of the 180 degree view, and to keep it open and sunny with the vaulted ceilings, the large sliding glass doors and the large windows on the East and West sides. I enjoy the little table with the two chairs in front of the big window as well. The idea came from visiting Paris, sitting in the little outdoor cafes, watching all the people go by while enjoying a cup of coffee or a glass of red wine. I am very pleased that you agree. Hurry back!!!!

In less than 30 minutes travel time, you can cover the 20 miles to Boone, drive 8 more miles to Blowing Rock. West Jefferson is only 10 miles away. The home of Appalachian State University and the Mountaineers (Go ASU!!), Boone offers the casual atmosphere of a college town. Walk the downtown area to find antique shops, restaurants, ice cream shops, and coffee shops. Cafe Portofino & the Tap Room and The Black Cat Burrito are two of our favorite restaurants. Once an old hardware store, Farmer's Hardware has been converted into terrific emporium shops, located on King St in Boone. The converted hardware store to emporium shops are fabulous. Convenient for purchasing Vera Bradley Products, pottery, fashion jewelry, greeting cards, candy, toys...what you don't have!!!! The detail for renovations to the old building is great, and the friendly staff make this a must when visiting downtown Boone. Also, don't miss the Mast General Store across the street.
