West Jefferson Cabin Rental Photos and Description

1 bedroom, 2 bathrooms, sleeps 6

Location: Near Fleetwood, Blue Ridge Mountains, North Carolina, USA (Mountain side cabin at 3800 feet near the New River.)

Accommodations: Hand Hued Log Cabin, 1 bedroom, 2 bathroom (sleeps 6) Mulatto Mountain Hideaway, located near Fleetwood, NC, is a great gateway to a memorable mountain vacation in North Carolina's Blue Ridge Mountains. Our cabin was completed in the Spring of 2009, and is ready to welcome you to the Appalachian Mountains for a long weekend, a week, or a month away from it all.

'The Great Escape' offers a large, upper-level master bedroom with a King sized bed, as well as a full bath with a Jacuzzi tub and vanity with granite counter top, and a walk-in cedar closet. An upper level 15'x32' spacious deck provides a four place Hot Tub/Spa, two place swing, glider rocker, picnic table, and LP Gas Grill. A second spacious bathroom is located on the first level with an adjoining wet/dry sauna, and a two car garage. Additional amenities include a gas burning fireplace with a remote, flat screen TV with a blue ray DVD, two Ikea sleeper sofas, two large 5'x6' windows facing to the East and West, two large sliding glass doors leading to a spacious deck with panoramic bird's eye views from 3800 feet of the Blue Ridge Parkway and Grandfather Mountain, a large well equipped kitchen with an eight foot bar, wormy maple cabinets, and granite counter tops, an expandable antique dining table, and front loader washer and dryer. The cabin has a southern pine T&G interior throughout with oak hard wood flooring, and cathedral ceilings in the kitchen/dining area and sitting area where you will be able to feel the warmth

Treat yourself to the casual atmosphere fine dining of Crippen's Country Inn & Restaurant in Blowing Rock. Located in a quaint, Southern, side-street cottage, you will dine on an absolutely artistic creation designed for the season. Don't miss Canyon's Restaurant, the view is priceless!! Canyon's is inconspicuously built on a ridge where you can enjoy a burger, and a million dollar view! You cannot leave Blowing Rock without a stroll downtown where you have to visit Kilwin's homemade ice cream and candy store on Main Street, and let the kids play in the park which is the centerpiece of Main Street.

In Ashe County NC you can enjoy virtually any outdoor activity you can think of. Everything from fishing, biking, hiking, whitewater rafting, to skiing and golf can be found in and around Ashe County. Kayaking the New River is as easy as traveling the short distance to Riverside Kayak and Bike Rentals where they have kayaks, tubes, bikes, and horses. More adventurous activities can be found by rafting the Watauga or Nolichucky Rivers, spelunking the Linville Caverns, or hiking the Linville Gorge, all of which are within 40 minutes of Fleetwood. And, don't miss the most visited destination in NC, Grandfather Mountain, which can usually be seen from the cabin, with the mile high swinging bridge, the animal park, and more. The Blue Ridge Parkway is a favorite spot for many people. You can look out over the many overlooks and see miles and miles of the Blue Ridge Mountains across North Carolina, Virginia, and Tennessee. Enjoy biking, hiking, camping, and many other activities.

Howard lives in the Florida Keys, and has three grown kids. He is a retired Commercial Airline Pilot, and retired USAF Pilot. Howard is a NC native. He enjoys the natural beauty, fresh air, and wildlife of the Blue Ridge Mountains while trekking and biking.

Howard Shipman purchased this cabin in 2009

I was looking to build an all wooden cabin with modern conveniences in a location that provided the best long range mountain views The Smokey Mountains had to offer, yet close to places to go for dining and activities. Southern Ashe County, 20 minutes from Boone, and close to West Jefferson, was the ideal place.

Privacy, Long Range panoramic views of The Great Smoky Mountains from 3800 feet.

Breathtaking views from a gorgeous home!

The reviews seem too good to be true, but I can tell you that is not the case.
Howard was exceptionally helpful before, during, and after our stay. The place was very clean with high end appliances and finishes. The view must be experienced to be believed.
West Jefferson is a great little town with fun places to eat, shop, and play.
My wife and I will definitely be back to this wonderful retreat!

Owner's Response: Thank you Bryant and Kristina for finding and choosing The Great Escape for your get-away to the NC mountains, and I appreciate your taking the time to leave your observations.

I am very pleased that you enjoyed the quality, design, and attention to detail that I have tried to build into the cabin, and I try to keep everything in perfect working order. I am glad you enjoyed the enhanced long range views after our recent efforts to top some of the trees blocking the skyline especially to the East of the cabin.

The little town of West Jefferson is a well kept secret that is becoming more and more popular as the downtown area is continually begin improved upon with the addition of new and interesting shops and restaurants. Some have been there for many years, and others are new comers within the last few years. I enjoy the farmers market on Back Street in the downtown area on Saturday mornings until one in the afternoon. You can find not only locally grown fresh vegetables, but many locally made crafts and local honey. Then, after you finish your shopping , walk across the street and have a great inexpensive lunch at one of my favorite spots, The Havana Café. They are open from 11 AM to 3 PM, except Sunday and Monday.

I do hope you guys will be able to return to the NC mountains and The Great Escape many times in the future. It was my pleasure working with you!!

awesome vacation cabin

  • 5 of 5
As has been said many times before, this cabin has it all...great views, solitude, comfort, excellent furnishings, and on & on. We enjoyed the hot tub overlooking the valley and steaks on the grill on the the porch. The cabin was centrally located for visiting West Jefferson, Boone, Blowing Rock, and Todd (for kayaking with Rivergirl Fishing Co). This was a great cabin for celebrating our 25 yr wedding anniversary while the kids were all at home. With the sleeping arrangements as they are, would probably be best for a single family rather than multi-family trip. The only thing I would do on my next trip to this cabin (and we do want to come back) would be to bring my on pillow from home. Everything else was perfect, clean, well-maintained and generally as advertised. The owner is very helpful during the entire process. We have stayed in lots of rental homes and this is probably the nicest one yet. Highly recommend!

Owner's Response: Thank you Michael and Gwin for taking the time to leave your very appreciated remarks regarding your stay at The Great Escape, and also thank Shelly and Steve for me for their recommendation. I sure hope you made some lifetime memories for your 25th anniversary celebration, and recommending the Rivergirl Fishing Co. for kayaking trips on the New River.

I know what you mean about bringing your own pillow. It certainly makes sense. If you are like me, you like to have many pillows. I don't know if you thought of it, but there are extra pillows with each of the sleeper sofas, just in case you forget to bring yours next time.

I am very pleased that you guys enjoyed the Spa and the Grill. I hope you also found the time to enjoy the two-seater swing, the glider rocker, and the picnic table which is a perfect place to dine, to enjoy the scenery and the approaching weather, or just to observe the hummingbirds fighting over the sugar water.

I hope you enjoyed the views after we topped about 60 trees in order to open up the mountain range to the East of the cabin. Having a 180 degree long range view is the main reason I chose this location to build the cabin.

I appreciate all the kind comments, and hope you guys have a chance to return again soon.

Perfect honeymoon getaway

  • 5 of 5
Beautiful, relaxing honeymoon getaway. Miss it already! The hot tub and the views from it are amazing. The kitchen is wonderful and fully equipped. The location is far enough away from everything without being too terribly remote. You are as isolated (or not) as you want to be. Plenty of things to do nearby. Hiking, restaurants, zipline, mini golf, movie theater. We had a wonderful time, and I am pretty certain we will be back.

Owner's Response: Thank you Lisa for finding the time to leave some very important guest comments regarding my cabin The Great Escape. You have certainly hit the highlights. I have always appreciated the fact that it in the perfect place for a couple who want to get away from it all, have a great deal of privacy, and relax. Plenty of activities in the area during all four seasons of the year, and places for great food. I do hope you have a chance to return again soon. It was my pleasure being part of your celebration.

The best family getaway we've had in years!!

The best family getaway we've had in years!!
  • 5 of 5
Wow, this was the perfect getaway for our busy family! We desperately needed a break from school, sports, social events and work and found the perfect remedy in this well-appointed and beautifully equipped home. From the moment we found this home on the VRBO.com website, we knew it was the one for us. And Howard made the rental process practically effortless! From the moment we started the drive up the mountain to reach The Great Escape, the stress started melting away. We were thrilled to find the home was even more beautiful than the online pictures depicted. Our teenage daughters instantly fell in love with Bali, the neighborhood dog! They also enjoyed kicking around their soccer ball, playing pool, watching movies and giggling into the night as they tweeted with their envious friends back home. My wife and I enjoyed the amazing long-range mountain views from the deck sipping on coffee each morning and ended our days relaxing in the hot tub with a nice glass of wine. We spent our days sightseeing in West Jefferson, Boone and Blowing Rock, and driving along the Blue Ridge Parkway. We can also highly recommend the zipline tours at The Hawks Nest---what an awesome family adventure! We now consider this our “home away from home” and have already booked our return visit for the Fall. Thanks again Howard for sharing your home with us!

Owner's Response: Thank you Melissa, Dave, Emily and Anna for being my guests at The Great Escape and the wonderful guest description of your stay. Your home away from home will be awaiting your arrival in the Fall when the leaves become their brilliant reds, yellows, and greens. Last week I finished the job of opening up the view even more by clipping the tops of some of the trees that were blocking the views of the mountains to the East of the cabin; so, I believe you will enjoy the change. Have a great Summer, and I look forward to your visit in the Fall, and many more to come!!

The WONDERFUL 'Great Escape' for our anniversary!

The WONDERFUL 'Great Escape' for our anniversary!
  • 5 of 5
I can't begin to describe how beautiful this cabin is. My husband and I booked it to celebrate our 1-year wedding anniversary. This was our first time using VRBO.com, so you can imagine we were a bit skeptical at first. Well, we were behind pleased with Howard's beautiful oasis. The hot tub is wonderful on cold nights and had a great view of the full moon while were were there. Propane grill was in excellent condition and used a lot on our stay. Kitched was fully stocked- there were even beer mugs in freezer (awaiting for my husband to pour his beer in- which he loves!) The bed was even pleasantly comfortable. I am very picky about cleanliness and I couldn't find one thing that was not up to my standards. We were even able to bring our labradoodle, Samson, who equally loved the trip especially day hiking and laying on the gated COVERED deck. The dry sauna was amazing as well. We promptly received back our deposit without issue or delay. We are happy to say we will definitely use Howard's Great Escape cabin again in the future for a peaceful getaway for just the two of us.

Owner's Response: Thank you Bianca and Rost for choosing The Great Escape for your first year anniversary get-away. I am so pleased you guys enjoyed the cabin, its amenities, and the views of The Great Smoky Mountains that its location provides. I truly appreciate your taking the time to leave your guest remarks.

The Great Escape provides an ideal place for guests seeking a high degree of privacy and solitude, yet it is only 10 miles to downtown West Jefferson with excellent restaurants, galleries, shops, and places for an ice cream sundae or a café latte.

The Great Escape is a Pet Friendly cabin for dogs. Dogs are such important and loved members of many families; so, I think it is important that they be able to share the new experiences with their families.

I do hope you will keep The Great Escape or The Perfect Escape in mind the next time you have a chance to get away for your next anniversary, birthday, or just a change of scenery and a quiet peaceful get-away. You will not run short of things to see and do, nature to enjoy like the song birds, and the hummingbirds, and an occasional turkey or deer, not to mention the fresh cool air and the smell of the surrounding forest while grilling your dinner on the deck and enjoying a cool beverage.

Thanks for your patronage, your kind words, and the perfect description of The Great Escape. I hope you will be able to return again soon!!!

In less than 30 minutes travel time, you can cover the 20 miles to Boone, drive 8 more miles to Blowing Rock. West Jefferson is only 10 miles away. The home of Appalachian State University and the Mountaineers (Go ASU!!), Boone offers the casual atmosphere of a college town. Walk the downtown area to find antique shops, restaurants, ice cream shops, and coffee shops. Cafe Portofino & the Tap Room and The Black Cat Burrito are two of our favorite restaurants. Once an old hardware store, Farmer's Hardware has been converted into terrific emporium shops, located on King St in Boone. The converted hardware store to emporium shops are fabulous. Convenient for purchasing Vera Bradley Products, pottery, fashion jewelry, greeting cards, candy, toys...what you don't have!!!! The detail for renovations to the old building is great, and the friendly staff make this a must when visiting downtown Boone. Also, don't miss the Mast General Store across the street.
